Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chess puzzle books put you in an artificial situation: you are told a combination exists, what the theme is and what you are required to achieve. This one is different. In a real game, a player may sometimes need to find a combination. On the other hand he may have to reject a tactical idea and simply find a good positional move. His task is to find the right move, whatever it may be. The 300 puzzles in this book put you precisely in that situation. Spectacular ideas abound in these positions, but it is for you to decide whether to go in for them, or whether you would be falling into a trap. If you need them, there are hints to help you on your way. The book ends with a series of tests to measure your skills against those of other players. For this new edition, John Nunn, a top-class grandmaster and a solving world champion, has added 50 new puzzles (with hints and detailed solutions) to test your skills to the full. For ease of following, extra diagrams have been added to the solutions throughout. Overall the book is 60 per cent bigger than the first edition.

Book excerpt: When I decided to make a chess puzzle book I had many ideas in mind: The puzzles should be challenging but not so difficult that a chessboard is needed they can be solved on the train, plane or wherever you happen to be when you have a few minutes to spare. The positions should be educational with some instructive point to the solution. I have generally stuck to that, but I also selected many puzzles just because they were fun. The positions are all from fairly recent games, so that the reader will not have seen them before in older puzzle books. John Shaw is a chess grandmaster who has been Scottish Chess Champion three times.

This convenient book provides 300 exercises, with instructive points highlighted in the solutions. There is something here for everyone. The puzzles in the first two chapters are based on a clear-cut tactic or checkmate, such as those explained in Gambit's best-sellers How to Beat Your Dad at Chess and Chess Tactics for Kids. The endgame challenges highlight tactics and principles in action. In practice it is vital to defend resiliently and seek counterattacking chances - there is an innovative chapter on these rarely-covered themes as well as puzzles where the reader must decide how to punch home an attack. Later chapters help readers develop a vital skill: the ability to make tough chessboard decisions. Attack, sacrifice, grab material, defend or simplify - it's for you to decide! Principles and guidelines are emphasized, together with common sources of error. The final section of puzzles will prove a stern challenge even for the best players, with the reader exposed to the full complexity of modern chess - with a few helpful hints along the way.

Although the classic combinations are not ignored, the great emphasis is on positions from modern tournament practice of the last decade. From the Author's Preface: "When coaching young players I have always given them a set of tactical exercises as homework, like my trainers did when I was young. I have benefited greatly from this, and still do. I have decided that it is best to sort the tactics by motifs first. This will help your pattern recognition, an extremely important skill." "I strongly believe that tactics is a very important part of the game of chess; the conscientious study and application of tactical principles have helped my sisters and me a great deal throughout our careers. I absolutely agree with the well-known maxim: Chess is 99% tactics. "This book offers every type of tactical motif imaginable, from the more common back rank mates, pins, skewers, forks and the like up to and including some of the most beautiful and rare combinations. This is a tactical book that will prove exceptionally useful for a wide range of players, intermediate through master strength and even beyond. I can heartily give this book two thumbs up. It will help you develop and improve your tactical skills tremendously." – From the Foreword by Women’s World Champion, International Grandmaster Susan Polgar.

Book excerpt: A unique instructional chess book that aims to help intermediate and advanced players improve their command of one of the most difficult aspects of playing chess - strategy. It does so by offering a large number of examples, carefully selected by the author, German grandmaster Karsten Mller. While there are many books and software programs available to assist chess players in improving their tactical ability, there are relatively few that focus on strategic and positional considerations. And, as most chess instructors and players know, it is much more difficult to teach and learn strategic concepts than tactics. Topics include: Good and Bad Bishops; Domination; Outposts; Undermining; Opening the Position; Blockade; Improving Piece Placement; Prophylaxis; A Second Front and The Principle of Two Weaknesses; Counterplay; Positional Exchange Sacrifice; Simplification; and Weak Color Complex along with targeted exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miniatures in the Ruy Lopez – Main Line Another Great Book in the "Miniatures in the..." Series! The lines covered in this book, the Ruy Lopez – Main Lines, arise (with a few exceptions for move order and such) after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0. The Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Opening if you like, is one of the oldest openings, named after a Spanish priest who first played it back in the 16th century. Needless to say, it has been played a few times since and remains a popular opening at all levels of play. Some of the lines are incredibly theoretical, but rather than burden you with a ton of theory in lines you will have limited chance of using in your own games, the emphasis is on the lines that are more likely to occur in your games. Those lines will be in chapters 3 and 4, the two longest chapters of the book. This book is by no means an all-encompassing theory work, which means that there is a lot of theory that is not discussed in the notes. This is of course intentional. The book is written to entertain and inspire. If you find some lines that you like, you are encouraged to dive deeper into those lines before using them in your own games. As for the games, they are typically between players with a rating of at least 2350 and often well more than that; you will find games between players rated above 2700 in this book. However, I have made some exceptions when a lower rated player beats a player rated above the magical 2350 number. To show the relative strength of the players, I have included the ELO rating of the players involved in the miniatures. A few games are of older date, but are otherwise as recent as 2015.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Know Thy Enemy” Sun Tsu, The Art of War Understanding what your opponent is planning to do or trying to accomplish is one of the core skills required to take your game to the next level. Viktor Kortchnoi once wrote, Well, if you do not check what your opponent is doing, you will end up complaining about bad luck after every game. This book consists of four chapters, all associated with the ability to think not only for yourself, but also for your opponent, to put yourself in his place. In this book, renowned author and chess trainer Mark Dvoretsky supplies the reader with high-quality material for independent training. Each chapter starts with a short theoretical section. Then dozens of exercises are given, from easy, even elementary, to difficult. Training your skills in searching for a move and calculating variations will help you at all stages of the game – which is why among the almost 500 exercises, there are opening, middlegame and endgame positions. Finally, the comments in the Solutions are quite detailed. Throughout the book, the author has tried to set forth the logic of the search for a solution, to show how a player can come to the right conclusions at the board. Recognizing Your Opponent’s Resources is virtually unique in chess literature. And Sun Tsu would surely have approved...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnus Carlsen Becomes World Champion! It was the match that the chess world had been anticipating for several years. Norway’s wunderkind, Magnus Carlsen had qualified as the official challenger for the world chess championship. He was facing the reigning world champion, Viswanathan Anand from India. Would Anand’s enormous match experience and years at the top be enough to stop the young Norwegian grandmaster? Magnus was heavily favored, and he did not disappoint. With the help of German grandmaster Karsten Müller, you can follow as the drama of the match played out in Chennai, India. He has annotated every game, providing insight into the battle for the title. To complement the author’s presentation, grandmaster Susan Polgar – the oldest of the famous Polgar sisters – shares her thoughts about the match in her foreword. She was there for the entire struggle providing coverage for the Indian organizers and media. Also included is a short history of the world chess championship, as well as color photos taken during the match. All in all, this is another fine book on the world chess championship by Karsten Müller.
