Numer ous questions have been asked by them relating to the application of chemistry to farm and everyday life, and for a number of years the author kept a question box in which were placed the more important questions asked in class, and the difficulties experienced in the laboratory work, and in developing the work from year to year these questions and difficulties have been considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Plant and Animal Life This book is the outgrowth of instruction in chemistry given in the School of Agriculture of the University of Minnesota since 1891. At first the classes were small and individual work with blackboard exercises and references to the literature in the school library was possible. With increased numbers of students, mimeographed notes were supplied until finally the size of the classes, and the volume of the notes have necessitated their publication in book form. The work was first given, in 1891, to a class of seven students, while twelve years later they numbered nearly one hundred fifty. The class of students to whom this instruction has been given have been mostly earnest workers who attended school largely from personal choice and who desired to make as much progress as possible. Numerous questions have been asked by them relating to the application of chemistry to farm and every-day life, and for a number of years the author kept a question box in which were placed the more important questions asked in class, and the difficulties experienced in the laboratory work, and in developing the work from year to year these questions and difficulties have been considered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biological Chemistry On surveying the whole field involved in these reactions we see that the subject can be divided into two portions. The first of these is associated with an accumulation of available energy and is thus concerned with the synthesis of organic material by green plants, under the influence of sun light. The second is concerned with the liberation of available energy in performing the life processes of plants and animals. The former is the constructive or anabolic phase the latter is the destructive or catabolic phase. The above two phases constitute a cycle (see Frontispiece). Starting with the simple inorganic substances, water and salts from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the air, the plant cells form carbohydrates, fats and proteins. During the activities of plants and animals carbohydrates, fats and proteins are decomposed, with the liberation of their available energy, so that ultimately the simple inorganic substances are set free once more. Examined more closely, the one main cycle can be sub divided into cycles involving different elements, such as one for nitrogen, one for sulphur, etc., but each of these is dove tailed into the general description given above. The arrangement of the subject matter of this book follows the lines indicated above. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Chemistry: Or Chemistry in Its Application to Physiology and Pathology At the meeting of the British Association in Glasgow, in 1840, I had the honour to present the first part of a report on the then present state of Organic Chemistry, in which I endeavoured to develope the doctrines of this science in their bearing on Agriculture and Physiology. It affords me now much gratification to be able to communicate to the meeting of the Association for the present year the second part of my labours; in which I have attempted to trace the application of Organic Chemistry to Animal Physiology and Pathology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Animals: A Study in Symbiosis During some ten years' work in a small marine laboratory in Brittany it has fallen to me not infrequently to attempt to explain to curious visitors what were my objects in going to and fro upon the shore, in wading among the seaweeds and in bringing into the laboratory minute, worm-like animals which represented often my sole "catch." I discovered that many of the visitors to the laboratory became interested in the work that was going on, and that, though they disclaimed a knowledge of biology, they followed with understanding and interest the story of the behaviour and life histories of "the worms" - indeed, they succeeded generally in putting to me pertinent and unanswerable questions with respect to these "plant-animals."
