Book Synopsis Neurochemistry in Clinical Practice by : Pradeep C. Bollu
Download or read book Neurochemistry in Clinical Practice written by Pradeep C. Bollu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most important neurochemicals and approaches everything from the neurochemical’s perspective. It attempts to integrate the biochemical pathways of synthesis and metabolism of these neurochemicals with the disease states and point out the avenues of diagnostic testing and therapeutic intervention. Each chapter focuses on a specific neurochemical and provides a brief history, the biochemical profile, metabolism, physiological functions, and the clinical aspects. The clinical part of each chapter includes a discussion on disease states with either increased or reduced activity of the neurochemical and either activation or inhibition of the relevant receptors. This book is targeted toward practitioners and students of neuroscience and is written to emphasize the importance of these neurochemicals in the brain. With this emphasis on background neurochemical processes, the readers will be pointed towards logical diagnostic studies, laboratory investigations, and therapies based on the neurochemical dysfunction that underlies various disease states.

Book excerpt: The Proteins, Volume II: Chemistry, Biological Activity, and Methods, Part B is a six-chapter text that explores the chemical and biological aspects of proteins. This book deals first with the general properties and components of plasma proteins, followed by a discussion on the protein components of immune reactions. The subsequent chapters describe the structure of fibrous and muscle proteins, including silk fibroin, keratin, and collagen. A chapter presents the methods of preparation, physicochemical properties, chemical composition, stability, and enzymatic activity of proteolytic enzymes. The last chapter emphasizes the half lives and replacement rates of the various proteins in animal tissues. Biochemists, physiologists, and medical researchers will find this book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Macromolecules by : Hans-Georg Elias
Download or read book Macromolecules written by Hans-Georg Elias and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like so many of its kind, this textbook originated from the requirements of teaching. While lecturing on macromolecular science as a required subject for chemists and materials scientists on the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich (1960-1971), I needed a one-volume textbook which treated the whole field of macromolecular science, from its chemistry and physics to its applications, in a not too elementary manner. This textbook thus intends to bridge the gap between the often oversimplified introductory books and the highly specialized texts and monographs that cover only parts of macromolecular science. This first English edition is based on the third German edition (1975), which is about 40% different from the first German edition (1971), a result of rapid progress in macromolecular science and the less rapid education of the writer. This text intends to survey the whole field of macromolecular science. Its organization results from the following considerations. The chemical structure of macromolecular compounds should be independent of the method of synthesis, at least in the ideal case. Part I is thus concerned with the chemical and physical structure of macro molecules. Properties depend on structure. Solution properties are thus discussed in Part II, solid state properties in Part III. There are other reasons for discussing properties before syntheses: For example, it is difficult to under stand equilibrium polymerization without knowledge of solution thermody of the glass temperature, etc.
Book Synopsis Landmark Experiments in Protein Science by : Pascal Leclair
Download or read book Landmark Experiments in Protein Science written by Pascal Leclair and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proteins are the workhorses of cells, performing most of the important functions which allow cells to use nutrients and grow, communicate among each other, and importantly, die if aberrant behavior is detected. How were proteins discovered? What is their role in cells? How do dysfunctional proteins give rise to cancers? Landmark Experiments in Protein Science explores the manner in which the inner workings of cells were elucidated, with a special emphasis on the role of proteins. Experiments are discussed in a manner as to understand what questions were being asked that prompted the experiments and what technical challenges were faced in the process; and results are presented and discussed using primary data and graphs. Key Features Describes landmark experiments in cell biology and biochemistry. Discusses the "How" and "Why" of historically important experiments. Includes primary, original data and graphs. Emphasizes biological techniques, that help understand how many of the experiments performed were possible. Documents, chronologically, how each result fed into the next experiments.
