Book excerpt: Educational Change and the Secondary School Music Curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand provides a fascinating case study in educational change. The music curriculum has been greatly affected by deep cultural and economic forces such as the growth of popular music's importance in young people's lives, by demands for inclusive and multicultural education, and not least by advances in technology that promise to invigorate all aspects of teaching and learning. This book brings together the work of a number of leading music education scholars and teachers from Aotearoa/New Zealand to both explore these issues and to share case studies of practice: both the positive changes and the unintended consequences. Each chapter focuses on a current issue in music education and the final chapter contains responses from a number of practitioners to the issues raised by the authors, drawing together the practical and theoretical dimensions of the book.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject African Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 4.00, University of Jos, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the curriculum changes in teaching and learning history in secondary schools within Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Specifically the purpose of the study are: 1. To determine if curriculum change in history require changes in teaching methods? 2. To examine the effects of curriculum change on history teachers’ mastery of subject matter. 3. To assess the effect of curriculum change on the availability of teaching and learning materials. The teaching of history as a discipline has a long tradition in the world and it is instrument par excellence for national development according to National Policy on Education and forging international cooperation and integration. History as a subject falls within the General Arts, and has for a long time, enjoyed a place in many African school curriculum especially Nigeria. The teaching of history in Nigeria could be traced informally to the pre-colonial days when parents and elderly persons recounted the past of their communities to the younger generation through folktales, music, and other art forms. These were chief means of conveying invaluable lessons and values that were highly cherished in traditional societies. The teaching of history took a formal turn in the colonial period when it was taught in the schools established by the missionaries and those established by the British colonial officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of curriculum development is highly practical, as Goodson shows in this enlarged anniversary third edition of his seminal work. The position of subjects and their development within the curriculum is illustrated by looking at how school subjects, in particular, geography and biology, gained academic and intellectual respectability within the whole curriculum during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He highlights how subjects owe their formation and accreditation to competing status and their power to compete in the provision of 'worthwhile' knowledge and considers subjects as continually changing sub-groups of information. Such subjects from the framework of the society in which individuals live and over which they have influence. This volume questions the basis on which subject disciplines are developed and formulates new possibilities for curriculum development and reform in a post-modrnist age.

This book's focus is on English secondary schooling in the late 19th and 20th Centuries, during which the definition of a general ‘secondary’ education was itself negotiated and consolidated before the development of secondary modern and then comprehensive schools. In each chapter, a specialist contributor considers the changing ideology, shape and status of one of the seven traditional academic subjects, namely Classics, Modern Languages, English, History, Geography, Mathematics and Science. These seven school subjects have dominated the academic school curriculum since the nineteenth century and continue to exert a powerful influence upon the contemporary school curriculum today despite the emergence of various rivals and the growing status of ‘practical' subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about curriculum change in secondary schools and shows how the quality of education has been affected by increasing intervention from central government. Following the story of one secondary school between 1957 and 2004, Norman Evans looks at: * the school before and after the introduction of the National Curriculum * the changing role of LEAs and governors * the characteristics since 1992 of school inspections responsible for policing the operation of the national tests * predictions of results and examination results * nationally set targets * compliance with detailed prescription of school curricula. This is the back-story of today's educational climate, as seen through the eyes of seven successive head teachers and long-serving assistant staff who worked at the school during this momentous forty-year period. How did the changes affect what they sought to do as professionals? Where have these changes taken us, in terms of what happens in classrooms and what happens in the school as a whole? And what can be learned from the development of the curriculum over this time to inform future practice?

Book excerpt: More than ever, secondary curriculum requires greater flexibility and adaptability so young people learn the relevant knowledge and key skills they need for the evolving world of training and employment. This practical guide, both radical and progressive, makes a compelling argument for a secondary curriculum that addresses the needs and aspirations of all students. A balanced approach will help reform students' attitudes and behaviours and re-ignite their curiosity and motivation for learning. Secondary Curriculum Transformed proposes an ambitious GCSE five-year journey inclusive of academic, creative and technical subjects, including T-Levels and mandatory key skills. To equip young people with this critical knowledge and key skills, the book: transforms the 11-19 curriculum so it does not disadvantage, marginalise or exclude young people; showcases excellent practice case studies from British and international contexts; provides curriculum models which schools can adapt to their own context; signposts educational research and listens to the 'student voice'; transforming them into leaders of their learning. Offering a comprehensive model for leaders and teachers to put the evidence into practice, this is essential reading for all education professionals.
