Endowed with powers he did not understand and could not control, Reams set about to avenge Silvia and expose Mayor John Adams and racketeer Norman Paridy. Now Adams and Paridy are in prison, his story has been published and John Reams, still unsure of his new power, wants to get his life back to normal. However, Paridys backers, an ancient Oriental crime syndicate has other ideas. Book excerpt: Zalor is a world filled with secrets Trapped in the high-tech world of broadcast journalism, news writer Jason McSwain dreams of the good old days when reporters worked on real newspapers. Then his dream comes true. Banentine Inc., the company that owns the twenty-second century broadcast station transfers Jason to the recently purchased Zalor Observer -- a news publication on the Earth colony of planet Zalor. Due to communication restrictions and a lack of support from Earth, Zalor has evolved into a ranching frontier culture. There, the colonists have learned to domesticate indigenous species as livestock, and to farm edible plants. They also have developed their own folklore; such as the four Strangers -- hooded figures who appear as specters and visit only a select few of the colonists. And then there is the Zalor secret, which the locals do not discuss. On Earth, a growing demand for Zalorian solar crystals has created an upswing in the off-world mining industry and a financial boom is expected to follow. But after Jason arrives and begins to adjust to a lifestyle much different than urban Los Angeles, he learns that one mining company is working to establish an illegal cartel. The colonists, divided over property rights issues and the promise of wealth, split into factions. Faced with the threat of civil war on Zalor, and military intervention from Earth, Jason launches an investigation that reveals dangers far more insidious than anything he could have imagined. He needs to get the information to Earth, but the mining interests have blocked his passage. As his fact finding mission continues, Jason discovers that Zalor is a world that hosts many secrets. But will this revelation stop a pending war? Time is running out for Jason McSwain and the colonists on planet Zalor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our desire to understand the global carbon cycle and its link to the climate system represents a huge challenge. These overarching questions have driven a great deal of scientific endeavour in recent years: What are the basic oceanic mechanisms which control the oceanic carbon reservoirs and the partitioning of carbon between ocean and atmosphere? How do these mechanisms depend on the state of the climate system and how does the carbon cycle feed back on climate? What is the current rate at which fossil fuel carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans and how might this change in the future? To begin to answer these questions we must first understand the distribution of carbon in the ocean, its partitioning between different ocean reservoirs (the "solubility" and "biological" pumps of carbon), the mechanisms controlling these reservoirs, and the relationship of the significant physical and biological processes to the physical environment. The recent surveys from the JGOFS and WOCE (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study and World Ocean Circulation Ex periment) programs have given us a first truly global survey of the physical and biogeochemical properties of the ocean. These new, high quality data provide the opportunity to better quantify the present oceans reservoirs of carbon and the changes due to fossil fuel burning. In addition, diverse process studies and time-series observations have clearly revealed the complexity of interactions between nutrient cycles, ecosystems, the carbon-cycle and the physical envi ronment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's oceans act as a reservoir, with the capacity to absorb and retain carbon dioxide. The air-sea exchange of carbon is driven by physico-chemical forces, photosynthesis, and respiration, and has an important influence on atmospheric composition. Variability in the ocean carbon cycle could therefore exert significant feedback effects during conditions of climate change. The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) is the first multidisciplinary program to directly address the interactions among the biology, chemistry, and physics of marine systems, with emphasis on the transport and transformations of carbon within the ocean and across its boundaries. This unique volume, written by an international panel of scientists, provides a synthesis of JGOFS science and its achievements to date. The authoritative chapters will be of great interest to readers seeking a current overview of the role of ocean processes in Earth system science and their wider implications for climate change.

Book excerpt: The cyclical boom-to-recession nature of the economics of cocoa supply is a major problem for the international cocoa industry - and especially for countries whose economies depend on cocoa exports. Only through an understanding of the dynamics of cocoa cycles can policy decisions be made through the various phases of supply cycles. Based on a major international cocoa conference, this book presents seventeen edited papers from leading experts, making a major contribution to that understanding. It explains the powerful economic, social and political factors which impact on the cocoa economy. It shows the laws of cocoa supply are closely linked to environmental, ecological and institutional factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an adult, I knew I would have to visit India, the place of my birth. My father was a British Indian Army Officer and my mother, the daughter of a soldier, was brought to India when she was 20 months old. She left India in 1947, married and with her two children, making a hurried exit before the partition of India.I have always felt I had India in my blood. My first breath, sound, taste, touch, and sight were of India. In March 2012, in my 67th year, I set off on a return journey, not as a tourist, but as an observer of India as a prodigal son. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture. What I found was a country and a people with which I felt completely at home. I basked in the inclusivity and generosity I received. I saw a country on the brink of great change as it collides with the 21st century.Hero on a Honda is a collection of observations and an informal account of my adventures in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
