Book Synopsis Managing Services by : Alan Nankervis
Download or read book Managing Services written by Alan Nankervis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid increase in global services during the last few decades is without doubt one of the most challenging social, cultural, political, and especially economic, forces of our time. Services have supplanted agriculture, manufacturing and resources, as the primary source of international competitive advantage in many countries, providing wealth, employment, and almost unlimited future opportunities for growth, whether in traditional or more innovative forms. This book explores the strategic management of services through an Integrated Services Management Model which links operational, marketing, financial and human resource management functions, within a broad and diverse collection of international, regional, and local service contexts. It contains numerous case examples, student projects and exercises, designed to illustrate common problems and innovative approaches, with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific and Australasian regions.
Book Synopsis Directory of Australian Birds: Passerines by : R Schodde
Download or read book Directory of Australian Birds: Passerines written by R Schodde and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent classifications of Australian birds have been limited to lists of "species" which are inadequate as biodiversity indicators. The Directory of Australian Birds: Passerines fills a huge gap in ornithological knowledge by separating out and listing not only 340 species of song-birds but also the 720 distinct regional forms. Covering about half the national bird fauna, the Directory provides science and the community with baseline information about what bird it is and where it lives in an Australia-wide context. Identity is taken down to the level of distinct regional population. No other compendium on Australian birds does this.

Book Synopsis In the Archives of Composition by : Lori Ostergaard
Download or read book In the Archives of Composition written by Lori Ostergaard and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Archives of Composition offers new and revisionary narratives of composition and rhetoric's history. It examines composition instruction and practice at secondary schools and normal colleges, the two institutions that trained the majority of U.S. composition teachers and students during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing from a broad array of archival and documentary sources, the contributors provide accounts of writing instruction within contexts often overlooked by current historical scholarship. Topics range from the efforts of young women to attain rhetorical skills in an antebellum academy, to the self-reflections of Harvard University students on their writing skills in the 1890s, to a close reading of a high school girl's diary in the 1960s that offers a new perspective on curriculum debates of this period. Taken together, the chapters begin to recover how high school students, composition teachers, and English education programs responded to institutional and local influences, political movements, and pedagogical innovations over a one-hundred-and-thirty-year span.

Book Synopsis Creating the Suburban School Advantage by : John L. Rury
Download or read book Creating the Suburban School Advantage written by John L. Rury and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating the Suburban School Advantage explains how American suburban school districts gained a competitive edge over their urban counterparts. John L. Rury provides a national overview of the process, focusing on the period between 1950 and 1980, and presents a detailed study of metropolitan Kansas City, a region representative of trends elsewhere. While big-city districts once were widely seen as superior and attracted families seeking the best educational opportunities for their children, suburban school systems grew rapidly in the post–World War II era as middle-class and more affluent families moved to those communities. As Rury relates, at the same time, economically dislocated African Americans migrated from the South to center-city neighborhoods, testing the capacity of urban institutions. As demographic trends drove this urban-suburban divide, a suburban ethos of localism contributed to the socioeconomic exclusion that became a hallmark of outlying school systems. School districts located wholly or partly within the municipal boundaries of Kansas City, Missouri, make for revealing cases that illuminate our understanding of these national patterns. As Rury demonstrates, struggles to achieve greater educational equity and desegregation in urban centers contributed to so-called white flight and what Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan considered to be a crisis of urban education in 1965. Despite the often valiant efforts made to serve inner city children and bolster urban school districts, this exodus, Rury cogently argues, created a new metropolitan educational hierarchy—a mirror image of the urban-centric model that had prevailed before World War II. The stubborn perception that suburban schools are superior, based on test scores and budgets, has persisted into the twenty-first century and instantiates today's metropolitan landscape of social, economic, and educational inequality.
Book Synopsis Atomic Narratives and American Youth by : Michael Scheibach
Download or read book Atomic Narratives and American Youth written by Michael Scheibach and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, numerous "atomic narratives"--books, newspapers, magazines, textbooks, movies, and television programs--addressed the implications of the bomb. Post-World War II youth encountered atomic narratives in their daily lives at school, at home and in their communities, and were profoundly affected by what they read and saw. This multidisciplinary study examines the exposure of American youth to atomic narratives during the ten years following World War II. In addition, it examines the broader "social narrative of the atom," which included educational, social, cultural, and political activities that surrounded and involved American youth. The activities ranged from school and community programs to movies and television shows to government-sponsored traveling exhibits on atomic energy. The book also presents numerous examples of writings by postwar adolescents, who clearly expressed their conflicted feelings about growing up in such a tumultuous time, and shows how many of the issues commonly associated with the sixties generation, such as peace, fellowship, free expression, and environmental concern, can be traced to this earlier generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, the real story of the life of Robert A. Heinlein in the authorized biography Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988) is generally considered the greatest American SF writer of the 20th century. A famous and bestselling author in later life, he started as a navy man and graduate of Annapolis who was forced to retire because of tuberculosis. A socialist politician in the 1930s, he became one of the sources of Libertarian politics in the USA in his later years. His most famous works include the Future History series (stories and novels collected in The Past Through Tomorrow and continued in later novels), Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Given his desire for privacy in the later decades of his life, he was both stranger and more interesting than one could ever have known. This is the first of two volumes of a major American biography. This volume is about Robert A. Heinlein's life up to the end of the 1940s and the mid-life crisis that changed him forever.
