Book Synopsis Every Root an Anchor by : R. Bruce Allison
Download or read book Every Root an Anchor written by R. Bruce Allison and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2005-04-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."

Book Synopsis The History of Guilford, Connecticut (Classic Reprint) by : Ralph Dunning Smith
Download or read book The History of Guilford, Connecticut (Classic Reprint) written by Ralph Dunning Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history. Download or read book First Vision written by Steven C. Harper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the biography of a contested memory, how it was born, grew, changed the world, and was changed by it. It's the story of the story of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began. Joseph Smith, the church's founder, remembered that his first audible prayer, uttered in spring of 1820 when he was about fourteen, was answered with a vision of heavenly beings. Appearing to the boy in the woods near his parents' home in western New York State, they told Smith that he was forgiven and warned him that Christianity had gone astray. Smith created a rich and controversial historical record by narrating and documenting this event repeatedly. In First Vision, Steven C. Harper shows how Latter-day Saints (beginning with Joseph Smith) and others have remembered this experience and rendered it meaningful. When and why and how did Joseph Smith's first vision, as saints know the event, become their seminal story? What challenges did it face along the way? What changes did it undergo as a result? Can it possibly hold its privileged position against the tides of doubt and disbelief, memory studies, and source criticism-all in the information age? Steven C. Harper tells the story of how Latter-day Saints forgot and then remembered accounts of Smith's experience and how Smith's 1838 account was redacted and canonized. He explores the dissonance many saints experienced after discovering multiple accounts of Smith's experience. He describes how, for many, the dissonance has been resolved by a reshaped collective memory.

Book Synopsis The World's Columbian Exposition by : David J. Bertuca
Download or read book The World's Columbian Exposition written by David J. Bertuca and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition had a profound impact on urban planning and the Beaux-Arts period of American architecture. The fair introduced the Ferris Wheel, Cracker Jacks, and fiberglass. Yet today, except for one building and a grassy park, all that remains is the legacy of printed material dispersed throughout the country. This reference guide, intended for historians, librarians, and collectors, provides access to that legacy. The introduction summarizes the Exposition's influence. The bibliography, arranged to allow researchers to browse topics broadly, describes over 6,000 books, journal articles, and other materials. A directory of special collections of fair-related materials is also included. Newspaper and magazine articles, books, dissertations, drawings, photographs, maps, letters, documents, and collections of memorabilia—these provide the enduring heritage of the fair. This guide provides information on all aspects of that heritage. In addition to the bibilography itself, an extensive introduction discusses the influence the fair has had on America. Illustrations provide a visual portrayal of the fair. A directory of special collections of fair-related materials provides an inventory of each collection, along with addresses and telephone numbers. This book is the only comprehensive reference guide to the World's Columbian Exposition.

Book Synopsis Rescue for the Dead by : Jeffrey A. Trumbower
Download or read book Rescue for the Dead written by Jeffrey A. Trumbower and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is a religion of salvation in which believers have always anticipated post-mortem bliss for the faithful and non-salvation for others. Here, Trumbower examines how and why death came to be perceived as such a firm boundary of salvation. Analyzing exceptions to this principle from ancient Christianity, he finds that the principle itself was slow to develop and not universally accepted in the Christian movement's first four hundred years. In fact, only in the West was this principle definitively articulated, due in large part to the work and influence of Augustine.
