Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Flintstone lived in a sunny Stone Age American suburb, but his ancestors were respectable, middle-class Victorians. They were very amused to think that prehistory was an archaic version of their own world because it suggested that British ideals were eternal. In the 1850s, our prehistoric ancestors were portrayed in satirical cartoons, songs, sketches and plays as ape-like, reflecting the threat posed by evolutionary ideas. By the end of the century, recognisably human cave men inhabited a Stone Age version of late-imperial Britain, sending-up its ideals and institutions. Cave men appeared constantly in parades, civic pageants and costume parties. In the early 1900s American cartoonists and early Hollywood stars like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton adopted and reimagined this very British character, cementing it in global popular culture. Cave men are an appealing way to explore and understand Victorian and Edwardian Britain.

For example, we steadily reduce the need for human labor while finding ways to increase life expectancy. We mass produce the automobile without grasping the harsh effects it leaves on the environment. The Human Legacy concerns the evolution and development of man–physically, socially, psychologically–into the latest version of the species we see around us today. The author paints an intriguing picture of man, living in complex societies and trying to solve the unanticipated consequences of action.

Book excerpt: How did caveman kids survive and thrive before at the dawn of time when everything was stacked against themThe caveman kids and grandpa were always at the cave while their parents were out hunting or gathering food. After a successful mammoth hunt they bumped into a little lost baby mammoth and changed history. They were now mobile and they had muscle power. But they were up against nature and sometimes nature turned against them, but this time the baby mammoth sounded a warning, and the whole tribe got out of harms way. The baby mammoth had nowhere to go so she joined the herd and kept the kids happy and warm at night. But this is only the beginning: we shell keep an eye on what the caveman kids get up to as the baby mammoth get older and bigger and helps out at the cave.Life In A Cave On The Edge Of A Cliff A long time ago before planes and trains and before buses and bicycles. Even before we rode horses. During a time when everybody walked, "Rock Thrower" and his older sister "Little Leaf" lived with their family in a cave. Their home was on the side of a hill overlooking their beautiful valley. In their little family there was Grandpa and Grandma along with three uncles and two aunties. There were many little children with their own mothers and fathers. It was a big happy family all living together in the safety of the smoke blackened cave. Rock Thrower and Little Leaf's mother and father loved the cave and everybody in it and they somehow managed to keep everybody happy. Home was in a beautiful place, around the cave everything was green. The sky above was a deep rich blue and at night the whole sky was pinpointed with endless lights. It was beautiful to sit outside at night around the fire just looking up at the heavens. Life was good, there was plenty of food but they had to find the berries and bird's eggs. They followed the bees to the sweet juicy honey high in the tree. That was the easy part, now the fun part began. Only the grown-ups would get the honey. And then there was lots of laughter when somebody got stung and started jumping around the place. They all loved the honey, it was a welcome treat. Life in the spring, summer and autumn was good. Especially autumn when there were many fruits and berries to eat. But the good days soon gave way to the cool days of late autumn. Then out came the old hides that were hung over the cave mouth to keep out the cold and now home was a cozy cave.
