Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sydney F. Smith's account of the Suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773 remains by far the fullest, most wide-ranging, and most detailed treatment of the subject available in English. Based on an exhaustive reading of European sources, it reflects the nineteenth-century debate about the Suppression. Originally published as a series of essays in The Month, a century after the first steps were being taken for the re-establishment of the Order at large and within a few years of the abrogation of Clement XIV's Brief by Leo XIII, this work is now presented to a new readership a century later." "Sydney F. Smith's examination of the episode remains both all intriguing account full of human interest and an indispensable work of reference for historians of the period. The study has been newly edited by Joseph A. Munitiz, SJ with a full index and with an appraisal by a modern scholar, R. W. Truman, to set the work in context."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Thought Suppression by : Eric Rassin
Download or read book Thought Suppression written by Eric Rassin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to ban unwanted thoughts from consciousness? According to the literature on thought suppression, the answer is no. In the 1980s, Wegner and colleges demonstrated that the average person cannot prevent a trivial thought like that of a polar bear from entering consciousness approximately seven times in a five minute period. This experimental finding was followed by a substantial number of replications. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the thought suppression literature. First, similarities and differences between suppression, repression, and dissociation are discussed. Methodological issues are then considered. Finally, the clinical applications of the thought suppression literature are discussed. Although there are numerous conditions to which the phenomenon of suppression can be applied, obsession and traumatic recollection are the main applications. In addition to offering an overview of the literature, this book links the thought suppression paradigm to other research fields, such as directed forgetting and repressive coping. Furthermore, it discusses the phenomenon of thought suppression in the light of broader theories such as the cognitive theory of obsession, and the ego depletion hypothesis. Clinical implications and directions for future research are offered.

Book Synopsis Assists for Illness and Injuries by : L. Ron Hubbard
Download or read book Assists for Illness and Injuries written by L. Ron Hubbard and published by Bridge Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assists for Illnesses and Injuries People sometimes get hurt in the business of living. The human body is subject to disease, injuries and various mishaps of accidental or intentional character. Throughout the ages, religions have attempted to relieve Man's physical suffering. Methods have ranged from prayer to the laying on of hands, and many superstitions arose to account for their occasional effectiveness. It has been a commonly held belief, however, no matter the method used, that the spirit can have an effect on the body. Today, medicine treats the body when there is something wrong with it. But it overlooks almost totally the relationship of the spiritual being to his body and the effect the former has on the latter. The fact is, after any necessary medical treatment, the individual himself has an enormous capacity to influence the body and its well-being or lack of it. L. Ron Hubbard developed numerous applications of his discoveries for the mental and spiritual aspects of a person's physical difficulties. And as more and more techniques evolved, a new body of technology came into use, called "assists." The ways assists can be applied are almost limitless. They always help and often have miraculous results. Dozens of assists exist today for a wide array of conditions, and several of the most basic and widely used are included in this booklet. Simple, easily applied methods to alleviate pain and discomfort. Contains the most used Scientology assists which have produced many miracles. * How do you speed an injured person's recovery? * What do you do to make a drunk person sober? * How do you bring relief to someone who is ill? For the solutions and answers to these situations, buy and read this booklet.
