Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation studied the photocatalytic oxidation of light alkanes using photocatalytic thin films. In the research presented, nearly complete oxidation of isobutane, n-butane and propane using ZrO2/TiO2 thin films in a single pass reactor was demonstrated. The importance of reactor design on the effectiveness of the photocatalytic reaction is discussed in terms of photocatalyst packing and adequate illumination for catalyst activation. The influence of relative humidity in the contaminant feed stream and the reactor operating temperature were evaluated to establish optimal operating conditions for the photocatalytic reactor. Further photocatalytic studies used propane as a probe compound to investigate metal-modification of photocatalytic thin films as a means to improve propane oxidation and mineralization. Six precious metals (Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru) were tested at 1 weight percent loadings in TiO2, SiO2/TiO2, and ZrO2/TiO2 thin films. The photocatalytic reactor was operated at temperatures up to 100 C with the expectation that a thermal catalytic enhancement due to the precious metals would be observed. Propane conversion data revealed that at 1% loading, the addition of metals to the thin films reduced the activity for conversion of propane, regardless of temperature. However, the reactor temperature iii significantly affected light irradiance. Reaction rates adjusted for the influence of temperature on reactor irradiance revealed the highest reaction rates occurred at 100 C, but evaluation of Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson kinetics showed that temperature significantly reduced the surface adsorption of propane. Of the 21 materials tested, an unmodified ZrO2/TiO2 thin film had the best activity for propane conversion and mineralization. Lastly, a novel method to investigate the photoinduced change in surface potential of photocatalytic thin films was investigated.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Chemistry - Organic Chemistry, , language: English, abstract: The present study investigates the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane-butane (C3–C4) fraction over mono (Cr or Mo) and bi-metal (Cr-Mo) loaded SiO2 catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by sequential impregnation method at 500oC calcination temperature. Experiments were performed by feeding C3–C4 fraction, oxygen, nitrogen, and steam into a continuous flow quartz reactor at an atmospheric pressure (P = 1 atm.), reaction temperatures between 500 – 650oC, gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) within 100 – 400 h-1, and at reaction time (tr) = 2h. Appropriate water vapor addition to the feed sinificantly minimizes oxidation into coke deposits on the catalyst surface, and also prevents further olefin conversion into undesirable product. The physicochemical properties were evaluated by BET, XRD, IR, and EPR characterization techniques. The major oxidation products are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, butylene. This paper reports that the total yield of olefins (Ʃ C2-C4) = 66.0 % was achieved at 83.5 % conversion level of C3–C4 at 630oC. The results indicate that the addition of Mo to catalysts of Cr/SiO2 modifies its catalytic activity for the ODH reaction. Mono-metallic catalysts (Cr/SiO2 and Mo/SiO2) were prepared for comparison purposes.

This work focuses on the development of a new synthetic methodology for the preparation of carbonyl compounds from the oxidative cleavage of terminal olefins using alpha-methylstyrene as a model compound. With the use of TBHP as an oxidant in combination with chromium(III) stearate catalyst, selective oxidation of conjugated double bonds with aromatic ring or carbonyl group was achieved at ambient temperature in 24 hours in moderate to excellent yield. Both the catalyst and TBHP are essential in promoting the reaction. The oxidative cleavage works well in aprotic solvents such as isooctane, acetonitrile, and 1,2-dichloroethane. The optimized condition was accomplishedly applied in the oxidative cleavage of a variety of different terminal olefins. The oxidative cleavage of electron rich alpha-methylstyrene derivatives proceeds in good to excellent yield. Lower yields were observed in alpha-methylstyrene derivatives containing an electron withdrawing group. The oxidative cleavage is selective for electron rich conjugated double bond with aromatic ring or carbonyl group. This developed oxidation reaction was believed to undergo via free radical process and high valent chromium oxo species.

Book excerpt: Reaction Kinetics and the Development and Operation of Catalytic Processes is a trendsetter. The Keynote Lectures have been authored by top scientists and cover a broad range of topics like fundamental aspects of surface chemistry, in particular dynamics and spillover, the modeling of reaction mechanisms, with special focus on the importance of transient experimentation and the application of kinetics in reactor design. Fundamental and applied kinetic studies are well represented. More than half of these deal with transient kinetics, a new trend made possible by recent sophisticated experimental equipment and the awareness that transient experimentation provides more information and insight into the microphenomena occurring on the catalyst surface than steady state techniques. The trend is not limited to purely kinetic studies since the great majority of the papers dealing with reactors also focus on transients and even deliberate transient operation. It is to be expected that this trend will continue and amplify as the community becomes more aware of the predictive potential of fundamental kinetics when combined with detailed realistic modeling of the reactor operation.

Book excerpt: The use of diverse methods as kinetic, adsorptive, electrical and isotopic enabled the author to propose a stepwise diagram of the oxidation of olefin hydrocarbons on different oxidizing catalysts. Propylene on the surface can form pi-complexes, or after dissociation, pi-allyl complexes. Both forms are converted into different oxygen-hydrocarbon complexes with interaction with oxygen: Studies of the chemisorption of the reaction components under the conditions of pre-catalysis (the adsorption temperature is lower than the temperature of the start of the reaction) and research on the behavior of the different oxygen-containing products on the catalyst surface area using kinetic and isotopic methods were undertaken for proof of the existence of such forms.
