Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living system ministry is an approach to Christian ministry in the Western world that recognizes the differences between cats, the world God created, and toasters, the world we create using our technology and our capacities, limited as they are. The church is the Body of Christ, a living system. Neighborhoods, cities, and cultures, too, are complex and interrelated living social systems. Why, then, would we try to do God's work in a church or social system using tools and methods designed for non-living systems? We do it because our culture is very organizationally - and technologically - centered. We have grown accustomed to thinking of our social contexts not as living systems, but as things we can easily measure and control. Embracing both perspective and procedure, Living System Ministry is aboutÊdoing better ministry by seeing a better picture of what exists in the total system. Like farmers, rather than technicians, we learn to be involved in and to be in tune with what causes fruitfulness. We never cause fruit to happen. God does! But as our work becomes better aligned with what God is already doing in his complex, living-system environment, there is an explosion of life. We discover the fruit that remains. Writing from his forty-five years of experience as an urban ministry practitioner in Boston, Dr. Doug Hall introduces us to an approach to missions that recognizes the lead role of God's larger, living social systems as powerful engines for doing far more in our world than we can even begin to imagine.

Massé's Inspired to Serve, and it is the book's message, as well." -- Melissa Fay Greene, author of Praying for Sheetrock,The Temple Bombing, and Last Man Out "Anyone who wants to know more about how diverse religious organizations perform civic good works should read this excellent account." -- John J. DiIulio, Jr., University of Pennsylvania "Powerful, real-life stories of people of faith serving and empowering the poor." -- Ronald J. Sider, President, Evangelicals for Social Action Curious about what had happened to the social activism of the 1960s, and in response to the recent interest in "faith-based initiatives," Mark H. Massé set out to identify people who had continued their social activism in the context of a religious commitment to work in aid of the poor and the disenfranchised. The profiled activists include clergy, lay workers, and others, representing a mix of faiths, social issues, and geographic regions. They include a Jesuit priest working in a poor neighborhood in Portland, a Muslim "messenger of good news" to an Islamic community in Texas, an Irish American nun working with migrants and others in central Florida, a black Episcopalian minister on Chicago's Southside, and a "Dharma activist" in California. What sets these and other activists apart is the depth and breadth of their service, vision, and sacrifice. Many risk their reputations and careers, their health, even their lives in pursuit of social change. Massé discovers that these individuals share an unbending belief in the power, potential, and rewards of service to others, as they try to balance their secular and spiritual lives in the face of challenging work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hello, my name is Thomas Thwaites, and I have made a toaster." So begins The Toaster Project, the author's nine-month-long journey from his local appliance store to remote mines in the UK to his mother's backyard, where he creates a crude foundry. Along the way, he learns that an ordinary toaster is made up of 404 separate parts, that the best way to smelt metal at home is by using a method found in a fifteenth-century treatise, and that plastic is almost impossible to make from scratch. In the end, Thwaites's homemade toaster—a haunting and strangely beautiful object—cost 250 times more than the toaster he bought at the store and involved close to two thousand miles of travel to some of Britain's remotest locations. The Toaster Project may seem foolish, even insane. Yet, Thwaites's quixotic tale, told with self-deprecating wit, helps us reflect on the costs and perils of our cheap consumer culture, and in so doing reveals much about the organization of the modern world.

Wanting the woman out of her hair, Christy investigates with journalist-friend Quinn, only to discover the body on Aunt Ellen's terrace was the woman who alibied the person complicit in Frank's murder. The 9 Lives Cozy Mysteries The Cat Came Back The Cat's Paw Cat Got Your Tongue Let Sleeping Cats Lie Cat Among the Fishes Cat in the Limelight Fleece the Cat About The Author: Louise Clark has been the adopted mom of a number of cats with big personalities. The feline who inspired Stormy, the cat in the 9 Lives books, dominated her household for twenty loving years. During that time, he created a family pecking order that left Louise on top and her youngest child on the bottom (just below the guinea pig), regularly tried to eat all his sister’s food (he was a very large cat), and learned the joys of travel through a cross continent road trip. The 9 Lives Cozy Mystery Series—as well as the single title mystery, A Recipe For Trouble, are all set in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Book excerpt: Dogs are getting lawyers. Cats are getting kidney transplants. Could they one day be fellow citizens? Cats and dogs were once wild animals. Today, they are family members and surrogate children. A little over a century ago, pets didn't warrant the meager legal status of property. Now, they have more rights and protections than any other animal in the country. Some say they're even on the verge of becoming legal persons. How did we get here -- and what happens next? In this fascinating exploration of the changing status of dogs and cats in society, pet lover and award-winning journalist David Grimm explores the rich and surprising history of our favorite companion animals. He treks the long and often torturous path from their wild origins to their dark days in the middle ages to their current standing as the most valued animals on Earth. As he travels across the country -- riding along with Los Angeles detectives as they investigate animal cruelty cases, touring the devastation of New Orleans in search of the orphaned pets of Hurricane Katrina, and coming face-to-face with wolves and feral cats -- Grimm reveals the changing social attitudes that have turned pets into family members, and the remarkable laws and court cases that have elevated them to quasi citizens. The journey to citizenship isn't a smooth one, however. As Grimm finds, there's plenty of opposition to the rising status of cats and dogs. From scientists and farmers worried that our affection for pets could spill over to livestock and lab rats to philosophers who say the only way to save society is to wipe cats and dogs from the face of the earth, the battle lines are being drawn. We are entering a new age of pets -- one that is fundamentally transforming our relationship with these animals and reshaping the very fabric of society. For pet lovers or anyone interested in how we decide who gets to be a "person" in today's world, Citizen Canine is a must read. It is a pet book like no other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one ever accused Greg Stott of not having a sense of humor. His retelling of experiences often left his readers begging for more and now there is an entire book dedicated to the events that comprise life (as he knows it). Notes from Beyond the Fringe is a unique and entertaining collection of stories based on one mans view of the world around him. With a distinct and engaging voice, Stott relates his life through vignettes that, while seemingly ordinary in nature, either wind up impacting him or are subsequently addressed by him in a manner that is anything but ordinary. His subjects encompass a wide variety of topics familiar to just about everybody but are liberally skewed in the retelling by influences that began with growing up in a pre-tofu California in the 1950's, were adjusted as a result of teen life endured in a boarding school, befogged by a misspent youth and eventually warped from the effects of being a single parent. Very little escapes Stott's attention and subsequent 'adjustments' to his concept of reality. Whether describing how to deliver 400+ newspapers at speed in a 1965 Volkswagen, explaining difficult situations to his pre-pubescent tax deduction, the acquisition of proper Texas BBQ etiquette or relating his seemingly endless failures in dealing with animals, offspring, relationships, hot rods and amateur carpentry, the stories are both original and told with a perspective that can only come about as the result severe mental instability. Be prepared to spend hours attempting to understand how anyone could have survived so long in an uncontrolled environment and enjoying the humor that is, more often than not, related at the author's expense in Notes from Beyond the Fringe. Your perspective on the world will never be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a frustrated church or nonprofit leader with years of experience and yet fail to see real change in the lives of those you serve? Do you find yourself discontent with the status quo of how things are done but cannot seem to figure out what changes will really make the difference? Are your staff, partners, and volunteers feeling burnt out and disinterested in the work they once loved? Have your donors lost interest in your vision and failed to see any return on their investment? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this book is for you. You will learn why your efforts have only afforded you the thrill of seeing immediate, short-term gains. You will learn why many of your efforts fail and how to successfully reset yourself and your leaders to reimagine the way you have always done things. You will understand why your mental models serve as catalytic precursors for transformative social change to occur. Sherita has a Kairos word for the Body of Christ concerning the failures of outreach and a collaborative and Servant Leadership approach to a solution. Her well-researched, biblically-based manuscript demonstrates that challenges and failures are systemic, and thus the strategy for a transformative solution must collaboratively address the systems. Sherita addresses the biblical social role of the Church, church leadership, and Body of Christ and demonstrates how Servant Leadership is necessary for bringing about community and social transformation. "Long gone are the days where we could depend on the government to solve all of society's ills. Instead, we, as Christians, must recognize our responsibility to identify and participate in solving the many complex problems of our world." She even presents a case study demonstrating how lives transformed through discipleship can naturally flow into transforming an entire community. This furthers the credibility of the ideas and solutions presented in the manuscript. The manuscript is framed from a belief of the author: "I believe God is calling His bride to join Him in higher endeavors that not only fill the belly but transform lives by guiding them out of bondage into the freedom of life in Christ Jesus."
