Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "William Penn played a crucial role in the emergence of religious liberty and remains a singular, if often overlooked, figure in the history of liberty of conscience. Penn's political thought provides a window into the tolerationist movement that gained strength over the second half of the seventeenth century. In addition, Penn experienced firsthand the complex relationship between political theory and practice as proprietor of a major American colony. A careful examination of Penn's political thought points scholars toward a new way of understanding the enterprise of political theory itself"--

Book Synopsis Conscience and Community by : Andrew R. Murphy
Download or read book Conscience and Community written by Andrew R. Murphy and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious toleration appears near the top of any short list of core liberal democratic values. Theorists from John Locke to John Rawls emphasize important interconnections between the principles of toleration, constitutional government, and the rule of law. Conscience and Community revisits the historical emergence of religious liberty in the Anglo-American tradition, looking deeper than the traditional emergence of toleration to find not a series of self-evident or logically connected expansions but instead a far more complex evolution. Murphy argues that contemporary liberal theorists have misunderstood and misconstrued the actual historical development of toleration in theory and practice. Murphy approaches the concept through three "myths" about religious toleration: that it was opposed only by ignorant, narrow-minded persecutors; that it was achieved by skeptical Enlightenment rationalists; and that tolerationist arguments generalize easily from religion to issues such as gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality, providing a basis for identity politics.
Book Synopsis English Constitutional Theory and the House of Lords 1556-1832 (Routledge Revivals) by : Corinne Comstock Weston
Download or read book English Constitutional Theory and the House of Lords 1556-1832 (Routledge Revivals) written by Corinne Comstock Weston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1965, this work studies the House of Lords and the various proposals for its reform, abolition or limitation of its powers which have been made in the light o f prevailing theories of the nature and characteristics of the English government. The work also contains a history of the theory of mixed government that arose in Tudor England and lasted until well after the Reform Act of 1832. This history both illuminates the position of the House of Lords and also provides perspective for the study of Democracy in the movement for parliamentary reform. One of the book's most original features is an extensive account of Charles I's Answer to the Nineteen Propostions, out of which came the startling new theory of the constitution, known as "mixed monarchy".
