Book Synopsis The Importance of Wood and Timber in Sustainable Buildings by : Ali Sayigh
Download or read book The Importance of Wood and Timber in Sustainable Buildings written by Ali Sayigh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes the important message that architects and structural engineers must strive to ensure that the buildings they design and construct should not be major contributors to climate change. Rather, they should be exploring the use of green materials and building methods – such as timber, wood, and associated materials – in order to safeguard the environment. These sustainable materials are not only environmentally friendly, but they have the added benefit of being easy to manufacture, cost effective, often locally available, and easily replenished. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that wood and timber are viable materials in the construction of a wide variety of building types, including medium and high-rise buildings. The Importance of Wood and Timber in Sustainable Buildings brings together a distinguished group of contributors from different cultures and building traditions to address why now is the time to rethink our construction methods and explore replacing many of the carbon intensive materials that are currently being used with wood and timber.

Download or read book Advanced Timber Structures written by Yves Weinand and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood is usually perceived as a "traditional" material. However, the properties of this material have now for some time made it possible to design free shapes and highly complex structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded by Julius Natterer, is testing the production of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric structures and curved panels under the guidance of Professor Weinand using digital calculation and computer-aided processing methods. The research results are tested in prototypes, which demonstrate the potential applications in large-scale timber buildings. By exploring the hitherto unused potential of wood as a construction material, this book provides an exciting and inspiring outlook on a new generation of timber buildings.
Book Synopsis Tall, Cross-laminated and Massive Timber Buildings by : Hannah Kate D'Errico
Download or read book Tall, Cross-laminated and Massive Timber Buildings written by Hannah Kate D'Errico and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was conducted to discover how the U.S. building construction and forest products sectors could benefit from the development of tall, cross-laminated (CLT) and mass timber buildings. Barriers that may restrict such development were also investigated. The primary benefits were discovered to be eco-performance and job creation. Code restrictions and material performance misconceptions were found to be the largest obstacles. Case studies of Treet, Tamedia, and the WIDC were conducted to demonstrate the benefits of tall wood buildings and the various paths around potential barriers. Opportunities for tall wood buildings in the U.S. are also discussed. This research discovered that a tall wood movement is gathering momentum in the U.S. To fully realize this potential, accurate information regarding the use of wood and the performance capacities of mass timber systems needs to be disseminated. Co-operation between academia and industry will also be necessary.
