Book excerpt: Disability evaluations are the most common clinical mental health evaluations conducted for nontreatment purposes. They place mental health professionals in the role of communicating information that is typically confidential to administrative and legal systems. Unfortunately, mental health professionals receive little to no training in conducting assessments that focus on disability and disability management, and often do not understand the implications and risks of providing this information, especially without conducting what are often specialized evaluations. Clinical Guide to Mental Health Disability Evaluations is geared for general mental health practitioners, providing them with the basic information needed to competently provide the various types of disability evaluations. It also provides enough information to inform forensic mental health providers in conducting more specialized evaluations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book concerns itself primarily with the mothers of mentally handicapped children. It discusses the problems of assistance that they may have experienced from their families, the community, or the available services. Whilst arguing for far more support for mothers when they are the main carer, this book also suggests reasons why some families are more easily able to cope with the problems of caring for severely handicapped children. This study is based on research that was conducted for and funded by the Department of Health and Social Security between 1973 and 1976.

Book excerpt: The philosophy of normalization and promotion of the plight of children and adults with mental handicaps has drawn more public attention in recent years. Governments in a number of countries have embarked upon policies involving the dosure of institutions, move ment of people with mental handicaps back into the community, and development of community-orientated programmes, although their reasons for this may be economically, rather than ideologically, motivated. Occupational therapists have moved into the community, along with other health professionals, in order to set up community services for people with mental handicaps. My own experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in Central London for 2V2 years, helping adults with mental handicaps to move out of an institution, has been a source of motivation to write this book. The amount of written material available on the occupational therapy approach to re settlement and de institutionalization is limited, in comparison with the massive amount of information written by, and for, other practitioners. Additionally, the number of texts written by and for occupational therapists with this dient group are few. Despite excellent support from OT colleagues, I experienced considerable frustration trying to define and perform my role, not helped by a shortage of texts to draw on.

In today’s world where diversity, equity, and inclusion are the hot topics in all aspects of society, it is more important than ever to define what it means to be an inclusive society, as well as challenges and potential growth. Those with physical and intellectual disabilities, including vision and hearing impairment, Down syndrome, locomotor disability, and more continue to face challenges of accessibility in their daily lives, especially when facing an increasingly digitalized society. It is crucial that research is brought up to date on the latest assistive technologies, educational practices, work assistance, and online support that can be provided to those classified with a disability. The Research Anthology on Physical and Intellectual Disabilities in an Inclusive Society provides a comprehensive guide of a range of topics relating to myriad aspects, difficulties, and opportunities of becoming a more inclusive society toward those with physical or intellectual disabilities. Covering everything from disabilities in education, sports, marriages, and more, it is essential for psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, psychiatric nurses, clinicians, special education teachers, social workers, hospital administrators, mental health specialists, managers, academicians, rehabilitation centers, researchers, and students who wish to learn more about what it means to be an inclusive society and best practices in order to get there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years the policy of isolating and institutionalizing mentally handicapped people has gradually been dismantled and a major shift to community care has taken place. But integration within the general community and access to special services has greatly increased the number of people with a need to know about mental handicap. Each profession or discipline has its own terminology; nowadays one must be conversant with all of them. In this comprehensive dictionary Mary Lindsey has brought together terms and concepts from a wide variety of fields. Approximately 2,400 entries are included, ranging in length from concise explanations to encyclopaedic essays, but always expressed in clear, simple language. Where appropriate, suggestions for further reading are made and possible sources of further information given. An extensive system of cross-references leads the interested reader further and makes valuable connections between entries. The medical aspects of mental handicap, its causes, prognoses and treatments, are of course covered in detail. But although the cause of mental handicap may be medical, subsequent interventions may be sociological, psychological, educational, medical, paramedical or psychiatric. This is reflected in the choice of entries, making the Dictionary an invaluable source of reference for all those involved with mentally handicapped people in any capacity whatsoever.

Book excerpt: Now in its 5th edition, Mental Health in Intellectual Disabilities continues to address the need for a handbook which, while well-grounded in research and latest clinical practice, is essentially non-academic and accessible for staff occupying many roles. For example support workers and managers in learning disability service settings, GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, community learning disability teams and other professionals who may find themselves supporting a person with an intellectual disability from time to time, as well as students of mental health and intellectual disability. The new edition represents a complete revision and updating, aiming to address key knowledge requirements and concerns of people working in the field and provide opportunities for reflection and continuing professional development. The content is illustrated by case studies to help the reader explore how best to address mental health issues in practice.
