But what happened to the protagonist of both novels, the famous hero d'Artagnan, in the meantime? The Cardinal's Red Lily tells an alternate story about what might have been... Paris 1640 - One for all and all for one! For a long time, the brave Musketeers' reputation preceded them, but when Captain de Tréville falls from grace, the regiment is disbanded. The former Lieutenant d'Artagnan is determined to save the corps - even if that means joining the Red Guard of the scheming Cardinal Richelieu. Book Synopsis Lolly Willowes by : Sylvia Townsend Warner
Download or read book Lolly Willowes written by Sylvia Townsend Warner and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-12-14T16:31:37Z with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Willowes endures a lonely and mostly isolated childhood in her family’s Somerset mansion. Her mother dies when she is a teenager. To the disappointment of her relatives, she shows no interest in marriage as she nears adulthood, preferring instead to read from her parents’ library and to pursue her interest in plants. When her father also dies, she moves into the London home of her brother and his family, where she’s to help with household tasks and the care of her nieces and nephews. Her life consists of this for many years, interrupted only by the First World War. One day after the war, the middle-aged Laura is suddenly inspired to move away on her own, buying a guidebook and settling upon a small village in the Chiltern Hills called Great Mop. Her decision shocks and outrages most of her relatives, especially her brother, who has until this point controlled Laura’s yearly inheritance income. In Great Mop Laura finally experiences the freedom and independence that she could never find among her family, but she also quickly realizes that all is not what it seems in the quiet village. Moreover, escaping her condescending relatives and their narrow conception of her as “Aunt Lolly” won’t prove as simple as she had hoped. Lolly Willowes was well received on its publication in 1926, especially in France and North America. In depicting an unmarried and childless woman who seeks independence in middle age, it was unusual in its time and anticipated feminist concerns of later decades, well encapsulated by Laura’s passionately stated ambition “to have a life of one’s own, not an existence doled out to you by others.” The notion that a middle-aged spinster who abjures a life of service is likely to be a witch indentured to Satan may strike modern readers as a derisive joke. However, Townsend Warner’s satire can also be interpreted as raising serious questions about the stereotypes and social norms, perhaps especially those influenced by religion, that curtail women’s freedom. Book Synopsis Entheogens and the Development of Culture by : John A. Rush
Download or read book Entheogens and the Development of Culture written by John A. Rush and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entheogens and the Development of Culture makes the radical proposition that mind-altering substances have played a major part not only in cultural development but also in human brain development. Researchers suggest that we have purposely enhanced receptor sites in the brain, especially those for dopamine and serotonin, through the use of plants and fungi over a long period of time. The trade-off for lowered functioning and potential drug abuse has been more creative thinking--or a leap in consciousness. Experiments in entheogen use led to the development of primitive medicine, in which certain mind-altering plants and fungi were imbibed to still fatigue, pain, or depression, while others were taken to promote hunger and libido. Our ancestors selected for our neural hardware, and our propensity for seeking altered forms of consciousness as a survival strategy may be intimately bound to our decision-making processes going back to the dawn of time. Fourteen essays by a wide range of contributors—including founding president of the American Anthropological Association’s Anthropology of Religion section Michael Winkelman, PhD; Carl A. P. Ruck, PhD, Boston University professor of classics and an authority on the ecstatic rituals of the god Dionysus; and world-renowned botanist Dr. Gaston Guzma, member of the Colombian National Academy of Sciences and expert on hallucinogenic mushrooms—demonstrate that altering consciousness continues to be an important part of human experience today. Anthropologists, cultural historians, and anyone interested in the effects of mind-altering substances on the human mind and soul will find this book deeply informative and inspiring.
