Book Synopsis Cries for a Lost Homeland by : Guli Francis-Dehqani

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guli Francis-Dehqani was born in Isfahan, Iran, to a family who were part of the tiny Anglican Church established by 19th century missionaries. Her father, a Muslim convert, became the first indigenous Persian bishop. As the Islamic Revolution of 1979 swept across the country, church properties were raided, confiscated or closed down. Guli’s father was briefly imprisoned before surviving an attack on his life, which injured his wife. Soon after, whilst he was out of the country for meetings, Guli’s 24 year-old brother, Bahram, a university teacher in Tehran, was murdered. No one was ever brought to justice and the family were advised to leave Iran. Guli was 14. They eventually settled in England with refugee status. Drawing on the riches of Persian culture and her own dramatic experience of loss of a homeland, Guli offers memorable and perceptive reflections on Jesus’ seven final sayings from the cross, opening up for Western readers fresh and arresting insights from a Middle Eastern perspective.
Book Synopsis The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church by : Inge B. Milfull
Download or read book The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church written by Inge B. Milfull and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a study and critical edition of the corpus of hymns sung by monks and canons in their services in England before the Norman Conquest. When Christianity was introduced into Anglo-Saxon England at the end of the sixth century, the practice of singing hymns in the liturgy of the Office was already well established. The hymnal that the missionaries brought with them was replaced during the Benedictine Reform in the tenth century by another body of hymns, itself introduced from the Continent. This edition assembles textual evidence of these early hymns, some of it hitherto unpublished, based on all extant manuscripts. Of these, an eleventh-century Latin manuscript known as the 'Durham Hymnal' (and in particular its accompanying Old English interlinear gloss) provides the core of the edition and its base manuscript. An introduction and commentary include descriptions of the manuscripts concerned and discussions of the sources, liturgical use and music of the hymns, as well as the phonology and vocabulary of the Old English gloss. The text of the hymns is accompanied by a translation of the Latin into modern English prose.

Book Synopsis All's Well That Ends Well by : Peter Graystone
Download or read book All's Well That Ends Well written by Peter Graystone and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few writers have a deeper understanding of the foibles of human nature and life’s absurdities and tragedies than William Shakespeare. This makes him a fascinating companion for the season of Lent, a traditional time for a spot of self-examination. This engaging, wise and often amusing Lent book sets quotations from Shakespeare’s characters and poems alongside biblical passages and reflects on the resonance between them – one reflection for each day of the season. It starts with dust on Ash Wednesday (‘Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust’, from Cymbeline) and ends with resurrection as Easter Sunday approaches (‘It is required you do awake your faith’, from The Winter’s Tale). In between, it considers many rich spiritual themes: mercy, love, loyalty, trust, good vs evil, guilt, forgiveness, ageing, grief, death, hope and more. Each day’s reflection opens with a quotation from Shakespeare and explores its ideas in conversation with the Bible and Christian thought.

Download or read book The White Stone written by Esther de Waal and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esther de Waal is one of today’s most beloved spiritual writers. In The White Stone, she reflects on the changes and losses that come with growing older. Esther reflects on solitude and, following a period of illness, saying goodbye to a family home and the Welsh border landscape she had known for decades which inspired some of her greatest writing, and adjusting to a new city environment. In her characteristic style, she sees everything as a portal into a deeper spiritual understanding. She draws on the wealth of the Christian tradition, especially scripture and the monastic and Celtic spiritualities she knows so well, to help her navigate her way through not only the inevitable sense of loss that accompanies such change, but also to embrace the new possibilities it brings. The white stone of the title refers to a small pebble from the river that ran through her garden that she keeps in her pocket, but also strikes a note of hope referring to the new identity promised by God (Revelation 2.17). This is a book of simple, profound wisdom that will speak to many coping with change in their own lives.

Download or read book David's Crown written by Malcolm Guite and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as the name of a virus, a corona is a crown, the pearly glow around the sun in certain astronomical conditions and a poetic form where interlinking lines connect a sequence. It is the perfect name therefore for this new collection of 150 poems by the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite, each one written in response to the Bible’s 150 psalms as they appear in William Coverdale’s timeless translation. The Psalms express every human emotion with disarming honesty, as anger and thankfulness alike are directed at God. All of life is here with its moments of beauty and its times of despair and shame. Like the Psalms themselves, the poems do not avoid the cursing and glorying over the downfall of your enemies, but wrestle honestly with them as we do when we come to say them.
