Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 2: June, 1921 Why take the chances of toxic effect with cocaine when it is now possible to produce local anesthesia with Apothesine without such effects? Apothesine is a synthetic local anesthetic, suitable for use in any surgical procedure in which a local anesthetic is indicated, except for topical application to the mucous membrane. Apothesine was subjected to a series of tests by experienced veterinarians for a period of eighteen months. This was done before the product was offered to the veterinary profession. Read what some of these co-workers say about Apothesine: We have used Apothesine as a local anesthetic in 2% to 4% solution with Adrenalin on horses and dogs. In our opinion it is superior to cocaine, for it does not excite the patient and cause irritation or sloughing. Its effects are more lasting than those of cocaine. We have used nothing else this summer on operations of the legs, especially quittors, and have discontinued the use of cocaine. - Dr. E., Montreal. Well pleased with Apothesine. It works in every way as efficiently as cocaine. - Dr. W., New York. Used it on three dogs in scaling tartar from the teeth. Was very much pleased with results. Believe it a wonderful drug. - Dr. E., New York. Dr. K., New York, reports excision of a large granulous growth on coronary band, using a 31/2% solution of Apothesine. He made a deep incision, but the horse did not flinch. The wound healed with no sign of sloughing, and the doctor is delighted with the results. Very satisfactory results; no side actions; most of the operations were amputation of the tail or removal of tumors from dogs. I used the strength recommended, about 2% solution; in some cases 1% solution. - Dr. M., New York. Apothesine is supplied as hypodermic tablets (V. H. T. No. 557), ten to a tube. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 2: December, 1921 After introducing hand into rectum, turn it palm downwards, palpate the vagina, and in pushing it forwards grasp the cervix, enlargement of which can be detected, then grasp the uterus, which should be round, firm, yet compressible. The horns ought to have the same feeling, but are smaller. In cows that that have had a number of calves, one horn will be larger than the other; this is usually found to be the right horn, but the difference is not great. The cervix and body of uterus in non-pregnant cows is found in the pelvis, the horns projecting over the brim of the pubis. In a few cases, especially heifers, the whole uterus will be found in the pelvic cavity. The hand can be passed over the horns of the uterus and the whole organ can be brought back into the pelvis, thus tensing the broad ligament and facilitating the finding of the ovaries. The oviducts, broad ligament and ovaries are next palpated. Some operators who who have small hands and arms are able to introduce one into rectum and the other into the vagina and cant the uterus over backwards into the palm of the hand in the vagina and massage it by rolling it gently between it and the hand in the rectum. Encouraged by the reception afforded this little periodical in the past, we take the opportunity to announce that the Editorial Staff are resolved to continue its publication this year. AS will be seen, some changes have been made in the Record over the old style, which we trust will be appreciated. While the size of the page is smaller, the actual contents have been increased by adding eight pages to the issue and using a slightly smaller type. We realize the vast extent of Canada, and the scattered nature of the profession, in whose care lies the health of the Dominion's greatest industry, and the fact that many veterinarians living in distant parts, are not overburdened with journals devoted to their service. With this knowledge it has been our aim, during the past three years to introduce the Record into every Province, City, Town and Village in Canada where there is a Veterinary Surgeon, and whose address we were able to obtain through all available sources. We have endeavoured to convey a message with every issue to gether with articles containing information of the latest achievements accomplished by workers in the many fields of Veterinary Science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 4: June-August, 1923 Success in practice in these days does not altogether depend on professional ability, as many conditions are found over which the practitioner has no control. Living expenses, drug costs and overhead charges are so high, together with the difficulty in getting a proper financial return or perhaps bad debts, that many a man is really driven out of practice. We might as well admit the fact that none of us are in practice for the good of our health. With the extensive and expensive training of the veterinarian and the mental and physical energy he has to expend on a heavy country practice, he has the right to expect such a fair return on his investment, that he will be able to maintain a position comparable with that of other professions. Sometimes the veterinary profession is compared with that of dentistry, but how unlike the dentists we are. Their clients don't wait until the middle of the night to call them, nor are they asked to travel along bad roads in all weathers to work, in many cases, in draughty and ill-lighted barns. Then withal, they are able to demand practically a cash payment of their fees and get it. Why is this? We cannot, but believe it is because, though a much younger profession than the veterinary profession, they are more alive to their own interests; the reason is they have learned the art of combination and have adopted better business methods. Further, that they were astute enough to see that their interests lay in having a governing or controlling body. Where are we in this respect? - when in Ontario the oldest English speaking Province, it is said that not twenty-five per cent, even, of the practitioners, are members of their association? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Veterinary Record, Vol. 3: Published Quarterly for the Profession in the Interest of Veterinary Science; Sept., 1922 The possibility of transmitting tuberculosis of cattle to the human being is now well accepted and the safeguarding of the milk supply in this respect is a necessity, for perhaps the greatest number of cases of tuberculosis is developed in childhood when susceptibility is far greater and during a period when milk bulks largely as an article of diet. Tuberculosis among cattle has both an economic and a sanitary aspect. The loss of live stock from this disease is difficult to measure. Cattle suffering from tuberculosis lose in value Whether they are beef producers or milkers. They lose in flesh and the quantity of milk is materially reduced. A most prolific way of spreading this disease is the practice Of distributing whey from cheese factories throughout the country, and skimmed milk from butter factories. In some countries the distribution of these by products is prohibited by law unless they are safeguarded by pasteurization. It can be readily understood that through the distribution of raw skimmed milk or whey tuberculosis can be spread from one herd of cows to another. To eliminate all tubercular cattle from the herd or to pasteurize all milk coming from untested cattle is therefore an essential requisite in the safe guarding of human health.
