Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Rebellion of 1837 Carlyle, in the introductory chapter to his relation of Cromwell's first civil war, wrote: "How has pacific England, the most solid pacific country in the world, got all into this armed attitude; and decided itself to argue henceforth by pike and bullet till it get some solution?" My object in writing the History of the Rebellion of 1837 in Canada has been to endeavour to solve the same problem in relation to that colony of the British Empire. How far I have succeeded I leave to each reader's individual judgment. I have sought to make fairness and impartiality my governing principles in describing the events of the time. The History is in some measure political, but is not, I trust, written in the spirit of a partisan: that I have tried to avoid. I submit the narrative to my readers in the hope that they will justify my pretension. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Personal Recollections of the Rebellion of 1837 in Canada The House of Assembly at Quebec had again and again refused to pass the Supplies. The speeches both inside and- outside of the House, and the inflammatory articles in the newspapers had excited the youth on both sides. The stormy petrels of revolution were on the wing, and a conflict of nationalities was in the air. The sons of the men who fought at Waterloo and at Trafalgar looked with scorn and contempt at the presumption of the spoiled child ren of French Canada and French nationality, who evinced a desire to dictate to the British. Queenly In figure, supple and graceful, with grey-blue eyes, teeth like pearls, and arms that Juno might have envied, it would be a wonder if she had not. Marie' 5 principal charm, how ever, was the expression of her face. It was the kaleidoscope of her soul. The varied emotions of her mind, like sunshine and shadow, chased each other. In quick succes sion over her features, for notwithstanding her youthfulness, her few years had been full of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Unusual Sources of Information in the Toronto Reference Library on the Canadian Rebellions of 1837-8 So I thought I would try to lead the student to more interesting sources of the fountain of knowledge, than at the dried up springs of the ordinary history. I then arranged to begin the bibliography. By doing the easiest part first. Which was to collect and make a list of all the histories of the rebellion. Then books dealing with the rebellion. Then the most important histories of ('anada which dealt with the subject to auv extent. This in itself presented quite a goodly list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forging of the Pikes, a Romance of the Upper Canadian Rebellion The Forging of the Pikes is a romance based on old political struggles in Upper Canada over eighty years ago. In the first part of the story an attempt has been made to give the viewpoint of the Reformers - "the Rebels" - who precipitated The Rebellion in 1837; in the latter part the attempt has been equally honest to give that of their opponents, the "Tories" - or loyalists of the day. But when all has been said it will probably be the love-story of Alan and Barry that will attract the greater number of readers. In the construction of the story the author wishes to acknowledge with grateful thanks, not only the help given by a few "pioneers," who still remember early days in the bush, but also that obtained from the following books: "The Rebellion in Upper Canada," - Dent; "The Life of William Lyon Mackenzie," - Lindsey; "The Family Compact," - Wallace; "The Life of Sir John Beverley Robinson," Robinson; "Landmarks of Toronto," - Robertson; "Toronto of Old," - Dr. Scadding; and Mrs. Jameson's "Winter Studies and Summer Rambles," from which has been taken the little Indian song, "Ojibway Quaince." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Upper Canadian Rebellion: Largely Derived From Original Sources and Documents Rolph and Morrison took counsel together. They felt that they were unsafe in the hands of so leaky a vessel as Mackenzie, who had evidently been so impressed by a sense of his own importance that he had been utterly incapable of keeping the secret, although he must have been conscious that upon the keeping of it the success of the movement, as well as the personal safety Of those participating in it, might probably depend. They moreover learned that in the course of his peregrina tions about the country he had made the most unwarrantable use of their names, and had most culpably misrepresented their views and sentiments. He had held them up to the Radicals as the real pro jectors of the movement, and as most anxious to place themselves at its head. There could be no doubt that their names had been a tower of strength to him in his machinations, and that he had used them without scruple, thereby inducing persons to acquiesce in the rising who would otherwise have held aloof from it. There could be equally little doubt that the mainspring of his action at this time was not patriotism, but a burning desire to revenge himself upon the Government. To this desire every other feeling had become subordinate, and he was prepared to risk the sacrifice of everything and everybody on the chance of attaining his end. Such were the deliberate conclusions at which Rolph and Morrison arrived, and they determined that they would work no longer with such an ally, unless, after becoming acquainted with all the facts, they should be of opinion that the rising was inevitable, and that it was likely to be conducted by cooler and wiser heads than Mackenzie's. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 'Patriotes' of '37: A Chronicle of the Lower Canadian Rebellion The manuscript for this little book, written by me in French, was handed over for transla tion to Mr Stewart Wallace. The result as here presented is therefore a joint product. Mr Wallace, himself a writer of ability and a student of Canadian history, naturally made a very free translation of my work and intro duced some ideas of his own. He insists, however, that the work is mine; and, with this acknowledgment of his part in it, I can do no less than acquiesce, at the same time expressing my pleasure at having had as collaborator a young writer of such good in sight. And it is surely appropriate that an English Canadian and a French Canadian should join in a narrative of the political war.
