Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian North-West: Its History and Troubles, From the Early Days of the Fur-Trade the Era of the Railway and the Settler; With Incidents of Travel in Tum Region, and the Narrative of Three Insurrections "No fabled land of joy and song is this That lieth in the glow of eventide; Not sung by bards of old in minstrel strain, Yet he who reads its history shall learn Of doughty deeds well worth all knightly fame. It is a land of rivers flowing free, Lake-mirrored mountains, rising proud and stem, A land of spreading prairies ocean wide, Where harsh sounds slumber in the hush of gloom, And peace hath brooded with outstretched wings. And here a mighty people shall arise, A peopled nurtured in full liberty; Yet, not forgetful of the mother land, Who scans with kindly eye her child's career, Wafting a blessing o'er the mighty sea. Such be thy future; 0, thou land of hope, Where, in the fear of God and love of home, Thy people shall increase 0, may thy soil Bear many a thinker, many a man of might, Many a statesman fitted to control, Many a hero, fitted to command. Such may thy future be - not great alone, In never-sated commerce, - rather great In all that welds a people heart to heart; Among thy sons may many a leader spring, By whom the ship of State well piloted, Thy haven of wide Empire thou may st reach, An empire stretching from the western wave To where the rosy dawn enflames the seas," About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the formative periods in Canadian history, the late nineteenth century witnessed the birth of a nation, a people, and a literature. In this study of Canada's first 'school' of poets, D.M.R. Bentley combines archival work, including extensive research in periodicals and newspapers, with close readings of the work of Charles G.D. Roberts, Archibald Lampman, Bliss Carman, William Wilfred Campbell, Duncan Campbell Scott, and Frederick George Scott. Bentley chronicles the formation, reception, national and international successes, and eventual disintegration (after the 1895 'War Among the Poets') of the Confederation Group, whose poetry forever changed the perception and direction of Canadian literature. With the aid of biographical, political, and sociological analyses, Bentley's literary history delineates the group's political, aesthetic, and thematic dispositions and characteristics, and contextualizes them not only within Canadian history and politics, but also within contemporary intellectual and literary currents, including Romantic nationalism, 'Canadianism', and poetic formalism. Bentley casts new light on the poets' commonalities - such as their debt to Young Ireland, their commitment to careful workmanship, and their participation in the American mind-cure movement - as well as on their most accomplished and anthologized poems from 1880 to 1897. In the process, he presents a compelling case for the literary and historical importance of these six men and their poems in light of Canada's cultural and political past, and defends their right to be known as Canada's first poetic fraternity at a time when Canada was striving to achieve literary and national distinction. The Confederation Group of Canadian Poets, 1880-1897 is an erudite and innovative work of literary history and critical interpretation that belongs on the bookshelf of every serious scholar of literary studies.

Book excerpt: In Rhetoric, Irony, and Law in the Formation of Canadian Civil Culture, Michael Dorland and Maurice Charland examine how, over the roughly 400-year period since the encounter of First Peoples with Europeans in North America, rhetorical or discursive fields took form in politics and constitution-making, in the formation of a public sphere, and in education and language. The study looks at how these fields changed over time within the French regime, the British regime, and in Canada since 1867, and how they converged through trial and error into a Canadian civil culture. The authors establish a triangulation of fields of discourse formed by law (as a technical discourse system), rhetoric (as a public discourse system), and irony (as a means of accessing the public realm as the key pillars upon which a civil culture in Canada took form) in order to scrutinize the process of creating a civil culture. By presenting case studies ranging from the legal implications of the transition from French to English law to the continued importance of the Louis Riel case and trial, the authors provide detailed analyses of how communication practices form a common institutional culture. As scholars of communication and rhetoric, Dorland and Charland have written a challenging examination of the history of Canadian governance and the central role played by legal and other discourses in the formation of civil culture.
