Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the history of shipping on the Great Lakes during the 1980s. In doing so, it relates the accidents, vessel transitions, fleet sales, and other events that occurred during the decade. The adverse economic realities faced by the Great Lakes shipping industry during this period shaped the fleet of U.S. and Canadian lake carriers to meet the challenges in the following decades. In fact, the reconstruction projects carried out during the 1980s to modernize existing ships have enabled many of these same vessels remain economically viable up to and including the present day. Many of the events, especially those minor in nature, that appear in the pages of this book have been largely forgotten today. From the Back Cover GREAT LAKES SHIPPING LOG 1980-1989 is a detailed study chronicling the events of one of the most challenging periods in the history of shipping on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. While the decade represented the end of what has proven thus far to be the last major phase of shipbuilding on the Inland Seas, it also witnessed a large number of demolition sales that removed over one-third of the vessels in the U.S. and Canadian lake fleets. In addition to others, features of this narrative include: new vessel construction and modernization projects, vessel name changes, fleet sales and acquisitions, accidents and other pertinent events, seasonal cargo statistics, historical synopses for many of the ships sold for dismantling, and over 1,000 vessel names cross-referenced. About the Author Raymond A. Bawal Jr. has had a lifelong interest in Great Lakes shipping and has authored four other books on the subject. Listed in the order in which they were published, these books were as follows: Ships of the St. Clair River, Twilight of the Great Lakes Steamer, Superships of the Great Lakes, and The Inland Steel Fleet 1911-1998.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of ships that have borne the name "Queen of the Lakes," an honorary title indicating that, at the time of its launching, a ship is the longest on the Great Lakes. In one of the most comprehensive books ever written on the maritime history of the lakes, Mark Thompson presents a vignette of each of the dozens of ships that has held the title, chronicling the dates the ship sailed, its dimensions, the derivation of its name, its role in the economic development of the region, and its sailing history. Through the stories of the individual ships, Thompson also describes the growth of ship design on the Great Lakes and the changing nature of the shipping industry on the lakes. The launching of the fist ship on Lake Ontario in 1678 -- the diminutive Frontenac, a small, two-masted vessel of only about ten tons and no more than forty or forty-five feet long -- set in motion an evolutionary process that has continued for more than three hundred years. That ship is the direct ancestor of all the ships that ever have operated on the Great Lakes, from the Str. Onoko, launched in February 1882 and the first ship to bear the name Queen of the Lakes; to the Str. W. D. Rees, which held its title only for a few weeks, to today's Queen, the Tregurtha, the longest ship on the lakes since its launching in 1981. Although the ships on the Great Lakes may be surpassed in size and efficiency by many of the modern ocean freighters, Thompson notes that the ships now sailing on the great freshwater seas of North America have achieved a level of operating mastery that is unrivaled anywhere in the world, considering the inherent limitations of the Great Lakes system. The Tregurtha reigns as a model of unsurpassed maritime craftsmanship and as heir to a long and glorious tradition of excellence. Every magnificent ship that has borne the title in the past has contributed in some part to the greatness embodied in the Tregurtha. In time, her title as Queen of the Lakes will pass to another monumental freighter that will carry the art and science of shipbuilding and operation to even greater heights. [Back Cover] The name "Queen" is bestowed upon ships that become, at the time of their launching, the longest ship sailing on the Great Lakes. Queen of the Lakes, perfect for coffee tables, lakefront cabins, and boat lovers' bookshelves, tells the story of each of the ships that has been honored with the title. From the earliest ships launched in the late 1600s; to the "palace steamers" outfitted with stained glass, rare woods, fine carpets, and silk curtains; to today's mammoth ore carriers, Thompson describes each great ship, recalling its dimensions, name derivation, accidents, and sailing history. Ship by ship, era by era, he constructs a chronicle of ship design and the changing role and nature of the shipping industry on the Great Lakes. Queen of the Lakes is a Great Lake Books publication.

Book excerpt: Alex Cowie As the twentieth century draws to a close, one of our greatest problems is the availability of energy. One way to study the energy problem is to resolve it into four areas; energy demand, energy sources, transportation of energy from sources to demand centers, and the optimal allocation of energy forms to demands. Each of these areas is extremely complex by itself. When efforts are made to tie them together, for example, to produce a National Policy, the complexities are compounded. Another way to study the energy problem, because of its political and so cial consequences, is to resolve it into geographical areas. Individual prov inces of Canada or states of the United States will have their concerns about energy within their geographical boundaries. As producer, consumer, or both, each wants to ensure an energy development program which will work to the maximum benefit of its citizens. Similarly, countries endeavor to pro tect their citizens and undertake energy policies that will assure either a con tinuation of the existing quality of life or - particularly in the case of "Third World" countries - a marked improvement in quality of life. These competing and conflicting goals call for a study which encompasses the whole world. Again, complexity is piled upon complexity. If the prob lem is not yet sufficiently complex, there is an equally complex question of the effect of energy production and use on the ecology.

Book excerpt: Steamboats and Sailors of the Great Lakestraces the evolution of the Great Lakes shipping industry over the last three centuries. The Great Lakes shipping industry can trace its lineage to 1679 with the launching on Lake Erie of the Griffon, a sixty-foot galley weighing nearly fifty tons. Built by LaSalle, a French explorer who had been commissioned to search for a passage through North America to China, it was the first sailing ship to operate on the upper lakes, signaling the dawn of the Great Lakes shipping industry as we know it today. Steamboats and Sailors of the Great Lakes is the most thorough and factual study of the Great Lakes shipping industry written this century. Author Mark L. Thompson tells the fascinating story of the world's most efficient bulk transportation system, describing the Great Lakes freighters, the cargoes of the great ships ,and the men and women who have served as crew. He documents the dramatic changes that have taken places in the industry and looks at the critical role that Great Lakes shipping plays in the economic well-being of the U.S. and Canada, despite the fact tat the size of the fleet and the amount of cargo carried have declined dramatically in recent years. Spanning more than three centuries, from LaSalle's voyage in 1679, through 1975 with the mysterious sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, to life aboard today's thousand-foot behemoths, this important volume documents the evolution of the industry through its "Golden Age" at the end of the nineteenth century to the present, with a downsized U.S. fleet that numbers fewer than seventy vessels.

Book excerpt: "The high standard of living that Canadians enjoy is dependent, in part, on Canada's involvement in global trade. About one third of exports and over a quarter of imports by value are transported by water. Shipping is vital to the competitiveness of Canadian commodity exports and is a lynchpin in many Canadian supply chains. In addition to its economic value, shipping is also critical to coastal community survival and food security in the Arctic, as it is often the only source of food and other supplies for Canada's most northern communities. Current trends in technology, climate change, emerging markets, and other factors, however, may influence the value of commercial marine shipping in the future. This assessment will explore the extent of both economic and social value of shipping on Canada and its regions while also looking at how shipping trends now underway might affect Canadian marine shipping activity in the future. Question What is the social and economic value of commercial marine shipping to Canada and its regions? How will global trends related to shipping affect future shipping activity in Canada?--
