Download or read book The Canadian Home written by Marc Denhez and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you want to live in a factory-molded cube made of plastic, asbestos, and UFFI? With an "H-bomb shelter" and the nuclear furnace underneath? Or a house designed by God to harmonize with the cosmic Muzak? The Canadian Home explains how our housing came to be including the pagan origins of "colonial" homes, why "Tudor" is not Tudor, and where so many predictions went wrong. But the book is not just about tastes and floor plans; it also celebrates technological innovation, from prehistoric Inuit windows (of stretched seal guts) to the R-2000 house and habitation in space. For the first time, records of the Canadian Home Builders' Association have been opened to reveal the power plays of bureaucrats, developers, architects, and financiers and how they affect the quality, affordability, and choice of our housing today. Fiery debates over the sublime and the ridiculous (e.g. 1940s architectural articles on whether Toronto should be bombed) are set against the backdrop of Canadian politics and industrial history. Whether the reader's interest is in construction, politics, or home decor, this book explains why the roof over our heads is the way it is." Pierre Berton "In his fascinating study of Canadian shelter, Marc Denhez takes us on a 20,000-year journey from the days of the cave, the tipi, and the igloo, to the H-bomb shelter and the mobile home. This is, in short, a lively as well as an erudite study of the development of housing . [It] deserves a permanent position on any library shelf." "If you live in a house or own one or build one if you have a roof over your head read this book. A housing book with punch and humour immensely enjoyable." -Charles Lynch author, journalist and former governor of Heritage Canada.
Book Synopsis Formaldehyde on Trial by : Lloyd Tataryn
Download or read book Formaldehyde on Trial written by Lloyd Tataryn and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigative journalist Lloyd Tataryn demonstrated that formaldehyde--used so widely in consumer products that it was dubbed "the workhorse chemical"--should be considered a harmful chemical. The formaldehyde controversy began with the plight of the 80,000 Canadian families who filled the walls of their homes with urea formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) in the 1960s and '70s. Many soon regretted taking government grants to install the foam: they suffered a host of health problems: respiratory ailments, headaches, nausea and rashes. And an increasing amount of evidence pointed to a link between formaldehyde exposure and cancer. First published in 1983, Formaldehyde on Trial is a startling study of how our technologically advanced "chemical society" remains backwards when it comes to protecting the public health.

Book Synopsis The History of Canada's Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) by : Dale Falkenhagen
Download or read book The History of Canada's Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) written by Dale Falkenhagen and published by The Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) was announced by the Government of Canada in the spring of 1973 and became operational the following year. It came about because of the dual recognition that the existing housing stock represented an important national asset that needed to be preserved, and that a significant portion of this stock was substandard and occupied by households unable to afford necessary repairs. Over the following 26 years, more than 600 000 dwellings, mostly comprised of self-contained homeowner and rental units, but also a good number of beds in hostels, dormitories, special care facilities and rooming houses, were repaired with RRAP assistance across all regions and areas of the country. During this time, RRAP demonstrated great versatility in adapting to the priorities of the day in achieving a broad range of public objectives from improving the housing conditions of low-income Canadians, neighourhood improvement and employment generation, to meeting the special needs of persons with disabilities and the homeless. This history is divided into two main parts. The first recounts the evolution of RRAP from its inception to the present day. The second part explores the evolution of critical aspects of RRAP related to need, its design, management and accomplishments, and concludes with an epilogue which reviews reasons for RRAP's durability and explores the need for targeted housing rehabilitation programs in the future.

Book Synopsis How Ottawa Spends by : G. Bruce Doern
Download or read book How Ottawa Spends written by G. Bruce Doern and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1983 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Ottawa Spends, some of the country's top political analysts get inside the byzantine world of federal decision-making, shedding light on the real priorities of the political parties. Among their findings: federal spending cuts do not necessarily "stick", because affected ministers are often given an offsetting package of funds for different purposes; while Ottawa has become the country's biggest advertiser (close to $60 million in 1982-83), it has increasing trouble discerning between information and propaganda; because they are afraid of losing their regional blocs of support, none of the federal parties is willing to behave like a truly national party. Published in 1983, How Ottawa Spends is an eye-opening look at federal spending priorities.
