Book excerpt: Fundamentally concerned with place, and our ability to understand human relationships with environment over time, Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS) as a tool and a subject has direct bearing for the study of contemporary environmental issues and realities. To date, HGIS projects in Canada are few and publications that discuss these projects directly even fewer. This book brings together case studies of HGIS projects in historical geography, social and cultural history, and environmental history from Canada's diverse regions. Projects include religion and ethnicity, migration, indigenous land practices, rebuilding a nineteenth-century neighborhood, and working with Google Earth.

This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of history in Canada has a history of its own, and its development as an academic discipline is a multifaceted one. The Professionalization of History in English Canada charts the transition of the study of history from a leisurely pastime to that of a full-blown academic career for university-trained scholars - from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century. Donald Wright argues that professionalization was not, in fact, a benign process, nor was it inevitable. It was deliberate. Within two generations, historians saw the creation of a professional association - the Canadian Historical Association - and rise of an academic journal - the Canadian Historical Review. Professionalization was also gendered. In an effort to raise the status of the profession and protect the academic labour market for men, male historians made a concerted effort to exclude women from the academy. History's professionalization is best understood as a transition from one way of organizing intellectual life to another. What came before professionalization was not necessarily inferior, but rather, a different perspective of history. As well, Wright argues convincingly that professionalization inadvertently led to a popular inverse: the amateur historian, whose work is often more widely received and appreciated by the general public.

Book excerpt: Serials Canada: Aspects of Serials in Canadian Libraries offers a new perspective on serials from a Canadian viewpoint. It provides a sampling of the variety and a sense of the importance of work--work which is less well-known and less covered than that of the U.S.--which Canadian libraries, scholars, and publishers are doing on serials. It presents valuable information not documented elsewhere, giving new insights and ideas to serials librarians worldwide. Authors in Serials Canada take a variety of approaches--historical and descriptive, argumentative, critical, and bibliographical--to their subject matter. Chapters offer close-up, in-depth snapshots of some important topics in Canadian serials. They cover topics including: electronic serials serials pricing, including new developments in the areas of cancellation, funding, cooperation, access, and electronic initiatives Canadian newspapers the historical development of Canadian ethnic serials publishing the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM) the editing, production, distribution, circulation, and marketing of the scholarly journal The Canadian Historical Review the purpose, focus, objectives, and future directions of the Canadian Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee (CSISAC) the history, mandate, and organization of the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information's (CISTI) Document Delivery service Some of the peculiarities of the Canadian serials situation are discussed in the various chapters, especially in speculating about the future of librarianship. Serials Canada includes a unique bibliography of works on electronic journals either published in Canada or with some other Canadian connection. It also sheds some light on the evolution of the Canadian Periodicals Price Index study so that librarians will find the Index to be more useful in future years. It emphasizes the common elements and some of the problems inherent in newspaper preservation and management by giving an overview of the Decentralized Plan for Canadian newspapers. The discussion of CISTI assists readers in understanding the various services offered by Document Delivery and discusses how technology has been used to ensure that CISTI's Document Delivery services remain relevant to its clients and cost effective in a competitive environment. The information in Serials Canada is of particular interest to librarians of all levels and library professionals and scholars. It will help the Canadian librarian stay up-to-date with developments at home and help those from other countries gain a more international and comparative perspective.

Book excerpt: Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children is the most famous medical institution in Canada. In addition to being the largest pediatric centre in North America, it has earned an international reputation for clinical care and research that has influenced generations of health care practitioners across the country and around the world. In a very real sense, hospital staff have touched the lives of tens of thousands of children and their families. SickKids has an equally remarkable history - from its humble origins in rented houses in Victorian Toronto, the Hospital would flourish to become an influential paediatric institution, pioneering Pasteurization, the Iron Lung for Polio, Pablum, the Mustard Procedure for 'Blue Babies', and the discovery of the gene for Cystic Fibrosis. It would also be the site of two of most famous medical controversies in modern Canadian history -- the suspected murder of two dozen babies in the early 1980s and, more recently, the whistle-blowing controversy involving the research scientist, Nancy Olivieri. David Wright’s History of The Hospital for Sick Children chronicles this remarkable history of the SickKids, including its triumphs and tragedies, its discoveries and dead-ends. In doing so, Wright has crafted a compelling and accessible history of SickKids that anchors Toronto's children's hospital within the broader changes affecting Canadian society and medical practice over the last century.
