Book excerpt: Anlaby Station is one of South Australia's best known pastoral properties. Once stretching between Kapunda and Robertstown it was renowned for its wool, exotic gardens and the lavish lifestyle of the Dutton family who were its owners for one hundred and forty years. Three generations of Campbells lived and worked there. Scottish immigrant Hugh Campbell was a shepherd in the 1860s and 1870s, his sons were boundary riders and station hands, and one, Charles, was the property's overseer from 1904 to 1938. In their time, Anlaby reached its peak in land size and sheep numbers then shrank. Telephones, electric light and motor vehicles were unknown to Hugh but familiar to Charles's children. World War One and the Great Depression threatened the security of their lives. Hugh's other sons made different lives away from Anlaby: as a teamster in Broken Hill, as a police trooper and railway worker in the Northern Territory, and a drover in Queensland. Their parent's quest for opportunity in far-off places lived on. Another stayed closer to home but was estranged from the family on Anlaby. The Campbells stories have been recreated using Anlaby records, family photographs, newspapers of the day and other historical sources relating to South Australia, Broken Hill and the Northern Territory. This is a lively account of the Campbell family, the communities in which they lived and the changes they experienced. Anlaby's own story, previously seen through the Duttons' lens, is given new life.'The Campbells of Anlaby 1860 to 1940' is a skilful blend of family and social history.

Book Synopsis A History of the County of York, East Riding by : Keith John Allison
Download or read book A History of the County of York, East Riding written by Keith John Allison and published by Victoria County History. This book was released on 1974 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: York East Riding II This volume contains the history of the 30 parishes that formed the wapentake of Dickering. The area lies largely upon the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, which here meet the sea in the impressive cliffs around Flamborough Head, but the wapentake also extended into the Vale of Pickering and the Plain of Holderness. There is thus a variety of landscape and agricultural history to describe. Much of the rolling wold land was occupied by open fields and sheep- walks until inclosure in the later 18th and earlier 19th centuries opened the way to improvement; on the lower ground much early inclosure took place, too. A dozen villages in the wapentake were depopulated in the Middle Ages. Most of the settlements are relatively small, but they include the one-time market town of Kilham and the seaside resorts of Bridlington and Filey. In the Middle Ages the 'old town' of Bridlington, with its priory and market-place, and the fishing village beside the harbour were quite separate, but with the growth of the resort of 'Bridlington Quay' from the late 18th century onwards they have been absorbed into a wide-spreading town. Bridlington has also had an interesting coastal and oversea trade and still supports a fishing fleet. The resort of 'New Filey' was established later, laid out near the old fishing village from c.1840 onwards, and its physical growth and commercial development have been more restrained than those of Bridlington. Fishing also forms part of the story of Flamborough. The wapentake contains a wide variety of ecclesiastical and domestic architecture, but there are two outstanding buildings: the great priory church at Bridlington, which survived the Dissolution with the loss of its chancel and tower, and the early-17th-century red-brick mansion of Burton Agnes Hall, replacing an old manor-house but retaining its 12th-century undercroft.

Book Synopsis The Brighton School and the Birth of British Film by : Frank Gray
Download or read book The Brighton School and the Birth of British Film written by Frank Gray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is devoted to the work of two early British filmmakers, George Albert Smith and James Williamson, and the films that they made around 1900. Internationally, they are known collectively as the ‘Brighton School’ and are positioned as being at the forefront of Britain’s contribution to the birth of film. The book focuses on the years 1896 to 1903, as it was during this short period that film emerged as a new technology, a new enterprise and a new form of entertainment. Beginning with a historiography of the Brighton School, the study goes on to examine the arrival of the first 35mm films in Britain, the first film exhibitions in Brighton and the first projection of film in Brighton. Both Smith and Williamson’s work features a progression from the production of single shot unedited films to multi-shot edited films. Their subject matter was inspired by a knowledge of contemporary pantomime, humour, literature, theatre, mesmerism, the magic lantern and current affairs and their practices were underpinned by active involvement in the new film trade. Through the exploration of how these filmmakers cultivated a new way of understanding film and its commercial potential, this book establishes them as key figures in the development of British film culture.

Book Synopsis German Ethnography in Australia by : Nicolas Peterson
Download or read book German Ethnography in Australia written by Nicolas Peterson and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of German ethnography to Australian anthropological scholarship on Aboriginal societies and cultures has been limited, primarily because few people working in the field read German. But it has also been neglected because its humanistic concerns with language, religion and mythology contrasted with the mainstream British social anthropological tradition that prevailed in Australia until the late 1960s. The advent of native title claims, which require drawing on the earliest ethnography for any area, together with an increase in research on rock art of the Kimberley region, has stimulated interest in this German ethnography, as have some recent book translations. Even so, several major bodies of ethnography, such as the 13 volumes on the cultures of northeastern South Australia and the seven volumes on the Aranda of the Alice Springs region, remain inaccessible, along with many ethnographically rich articles and reports in mission archives. In 18 chapters, this book introduces and reviews the significance of this neglected work, much of it by missionaries who first wrote on Australian Aboriginal cultures in the 1840s. Almost all of these German speakers, in particular the missionaries, learnt an Aboriginal language in order to be able to document religious beliefs, mythology and songs as a first step to conversion. As a result, they produced an enormously valuable body of work that will greatly enrich regional ethnographies.
