Book excerpt: "Many have hailed the widespread use of generic drugs as one of the most important public-health developments of the twenty-first century. Today, almost 90 percent of our pharmaceutical market is comprised of generics, the majority of which are manufactured overseas. We have been reassured by our doctors, our pharmacists and our regulators that generic drugs are identical to their brand-name counterparts, just less expensive. But is this really true? Katherine Eban's Bottle of Lies exposes the deceit behind generic-drug manufacturing--and the attendant risks for global health. Drawing on exclusive accounts from whistleblowers and regulators, as well as thousands of pages of confidential FDA documents, Eban reveals an industry where fraud is rampant, companies routinely falsify data, and executives circumvent almost every principle of safe manufacturing to minimize cost and maximize profit, confident in their ability to fool inspectors. Meanwhile, patients unwittingly consume medicine with unpredictable and dangerous effects. The story of generic drugs is truly global. It connects middle America to China, India, sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil, and represents the ultimate litmus test of globalization: what are the risks of moving drug manufacturing offshore, and are they worth the savings?"--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: "The Steps for the Future documentary film project began in 2000, as a shared journey by talented African filmmakers and well-known professionals from around the world. The experience of the North combined with the knowledge of the South was an auspicious fusion that helped create 38 unique films. It was also the catalyst for new documentary projects such as Why Democracy? All the films produced dealt with the question of death and the enormous problem of HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa. Films that millions of people have seen worldwide, that have received awards from Cannes to Zanzibar, and \2013 dubbed into local languages \2013 are still used throughout southern Africa. Steps by Steps provides an honest and thorough picture of the process, step by step. Detailed accounts of the logistics of making the series are mingled with reflections on the art of direction, working with other people and the reality of the lives of those people affected by HIV and AIDS. Steps by Steps gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of documentary films and the building of a worldwide project, complete with its problems and triumphs, mistakes and unique results"--Publisher's website.

Fresh from spying for the Allies in the thick of World War II Germany, the globe-trotting archaeologist doesn’t need much persuading to join his cohort “Mac” McHale in searching for one of the most coveted of artifacts: the fabled black pearl known as the Heart of Darkness. But the partners in adventure are not alone on their foray into the mysterious jungles of Haiti. German and Japanese agents are in hot pursuit, determined to possess the ebony artifact–and its secrets–for their own sinister purposes. And shadowing them all is an infamous voodoo priest, with powers of both diabolical science and black magic at his command. On a treacherous odyssey across the Island of the Dead, where the legend of the zombi looms large, spiders, snakes, and booby traps will prove the least of Indy’s challenges. And capturing the prize will be child’s play compared to confronting an enemy unlike any other, whose numbers are legion and nearly impossible to kill–because they’re already dead. . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy, perhaps the first of the sciences, was already well developed by the time of Christ. Seventeen centuries later, after Newton showed that the movements of the planets could be explained in terms of gravitation, it became the paradigm for the mathematical sciences. In the nineteenth century the analysis of star-light allowed astrophysicists to determine both the chemical composition and the radial velocities of celestial bodies, while the development of photography enabled distant objects invisible to the human eye, to be studied and measured in comfort. Technical developments during and since the Second World War have greatly enlarged the scope of the science by permitting the study of radiation. This is a fascinating introduction to the history of Western astronomy, from prehistoric times to the origins of astrophysics in the mid-nineteenth century. Historical records are first found in Babylon and Egypt, and after two millennia the arithmetical astronomy of the Babylonians merged with the Greek geometrical approach to culminate in the Almagest of Ptolemy. This legacy was transmitted to the Latin West via Islam, and led to Copernicus's claim that the Earth is in motion. In justifying this Kepler converted astronomy into a branch of dynamics, leading to Newton's universal law of gravity. The book concludes with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century applications of Newton's law, and the first explorations of the universe of stars. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Book excerpt: This second and final volume concludes the complete reprinting of this often underrated, important, and hard-hitting undercover detective series from the mid-1930s. One of the most visually innovative adventure strips of the mid-1930s, Red Barry was King Features' answer to the Tribune Syndicate's popular Dick Tracy by Chester Gould. Red Barry by Will Gould (no relation to Chester) was an auteur's vision that lasted less than four years, but is today considered one of comics history's great unsung masterpieces. Working undercover for the police, Red insinuates himself into the ranks of organized crime. Only one person, Inspector Scott, is aware of Red's role, which means Barry can't rely on getting help from the cops. His dangerous missions among the criminal element played out with a level of violence that caused no small upset with Gould's publishers. Volume 2 completes the collection of the series' daily strips and color Sundays.

Book excerpt: "In this collection, we challenge dominant narratives of the future by bringing together a broad collection of voices and perspectives from Aotearoa New Zealand on the question of possible futures. Chapters interrogate whose lives are at stake in different visions and projects of the future, whose voices and visions count, and what elements are at play in the unfolding of certain futures over others. The chapters highlight the need to be attentive to how various social technologies and institutions invite certain ways of being, thinking and acting and exclude others. In doing so, they offer a series of reflections on futures ‘from below’ to amplify voices and fight for alternatives. Many of us have become accustomed to speaking of what comes next in terms of a singular ‘future’. Such accounts of the future tend to operate within the narrow confines of colonial capitalism and assume continued economic growth. But there is no ‘one’ future; there are many. As contributions to this book attest, irreconcilable and interrelated futures are already playing out in the present. When futures are approached in this way – in the plural and in relation – they open to questions of which futures and whose futures. In other words, they open to politics.Contributors: Hana Burgess, Luke Goode, Kassie Hartendorp, Aitor Jiménez González, John Morgan, Anna-Maria Murtola, Te Kahuratai Painting, Anisha Sankar, Sy Taffel, Arcia Tecun, Samuel Te Kani, Shannon Walsh, Toyah WebbDesign: Gabi Lardies".--Provided by publisher.
