Book Synopsis Building Societies in the Financial Services Industry by : Barbara Casu
Download or read book Building Societies in the Financial Services Industry written by Barbara Casu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of the role of UK building societies, their strengths and weaknesses, and their contribution to the industry, at a time where public confidence in banking is low. Chapters present the results of an empirical analysis of the comparative performance of UK building societies, since the large-scale demutualisation process ended in the year 2000. The authors highlight the substantial impact of the financial crisis on the sector, with 2008 and 2009 being particularly difficult years. The book discusses banks and building societies in the context of the improving economy and show that both groups have recovered some profitability, although not at the pre-crisis level. The reader will discover that building societies in particular have recovered well from the financial turmoil and they appear less risky than banks on a variety of measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of franchising on industry evolution is explored in this book both in terms of the emergence of franchising and its impact on industry structure. Examining literature and statistical information the first section provides an overview of franchising. The Role of Franchising on Industry Evolution then focuses on two core elements; the emergence or franchising and the contextual drivers prompting its adoption, and the impact of franchising on industry-level structural changes. Through two industry case studies, the author demonstrates how franchising has the ability to fundamentally transform an industry’s structure from one of fragmentation to one of consolidation.

Download or read book The Building Society Promise written by Antoninus Samy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Building Society Promise explores the accessibility of the early building society movement to working-class households before the Second World War. The study examines the historical records of building societies which existed in the past and reconstructs their mortgage portfolios to investigate the kinds of people that were buying houses with the help of building society finance during this period. Antoninus Samy shows how the accessibility ofdifferent building societies primarily depended upon the how individual societies were designed to do business, which in turn also affected their efficiency and stability. Societies that were small and highlylocalized (or large societies that had agency networks that were closely knit with the communities they served) were more likely to be accessible, efficient and stable, than larger societies that operated no differently than impersonal corporate banks.
