Book excerpt: Why do millions of tech startups fail every year? Despite having a good product, customers, and even help from accelerator and seed programs, many new tech companies simply don't succeed. What's missing? Operational structure. The Vision to Value Framework is an operational model designed to help tech organizations scale growth in a sustainable and profitable way. The book introduces the model, its scope, and its impact on organizations. Vision to Value compiles the experience and strategy of tech entrepreneur and startup co-founder Luis Gomes de Abreu in his journey to scaling Amsterdam-based Nmbrs, and the organization's 10-year journey of growth. With a focus on building mindset, strategy, and formal structure to support increasing operations, the book works to bridge the gap between startup and a scaled organization. Featuring theoretical as well as practical information, the Vision to Value lays the foundations for designing an organization around agility, scalability, and delivering value to the end-user. Strategy, tips, and ideas function to guide leaders in technical operations towards setting up product development structure, customer support, developing business processes, and organizing teams, while highlighting many of the issues contributing to organizational failure, and some approaches to solving them. Most importantly, Vision to Value focuses on designing structure, organizing teams, and creating an operational model designed to support growth - so that anyone can realize those ideas inside their own organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-sighted, polluting, and greedy... A barrage of criticism has been leveled at business over the last twenty years, challenging its legitimacy. Once a source of national pride and a bastion of progress, business as an activity has been covered in opprobrium for having contributed to the problems bedeviling our planet, extending from ever-growing inequalities to intractable ecological crises. The authors of this book nonetheless believe that business benefits society. Some people in business have lost sight of that fact, but this only underscores the urgency of restoring to business its original role : its usefulness to society as a whole. Business that is useful has an increasingly important and necessary role to play in addressing the colossal environmental, social, and political issues we face today. Realizing something so ambitious requires a collective redefinition of capitalism. Relying on lessons learned from recent crises and the combined perspectives of a captain of industry and a leading academic, A Broader Vision of Business aims to lay the foundations for a new narrative of business.

Book excerpt: Man Enough challenges the idea that there is one way to be a man. The masculinity that pervades our church and culture often demands that men conform to a macho ideal, leaving many men feeling ashamed that they’re not living up to God’s plan for them. Nate uses his own story of not feeling “man enough”, as well as sociological and historical reflections, to help men see that manhood isn’t about what you do, but who you are. It’s not about the size of your paycheck, your athletic ability, or your competitive spirit. You don’t have to fit any masculine stereotype to be a real man. In our culture and churches more thoughtful, quieter, or compassionate personalities, as well as stay-at-home dads, are often looked down upon; and sermons, conferences, and publications center on helping men become “real men”. This pressure to have one’s manhood validated is antithetical to Gospel living and negatively affects how men relate to each other, to women and children, and to God. Man Enough roots men in the Gospel, examines biblical examples of masculinity that challenge the idea of a singular type of man, and ultimately encourages men to conform to the image of Jesus—freeing men up to be who they were created to be: a son of God who uniquely bears His image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Female Vision shows why: • What women see matters to organizations • What women notice is what organizations need now • What women value Will Define Organizational Excellence in The Future Women often see the world from a different angle than men. But this fact has been overlooked in most organizations. In this brilliant and strongly argued new book, Sally Helgesen and Julie Johnson demonstrate why “the female vision”—what women notice, what they value, how they connect the dots—constitutes women's most powerful asset in the workplace. Drawing on multiple strands of research, including their own Satisfaction Profile Assessment, they show what companies must do to engage, energize, and support talented women. And they show women how to nurture and sustain their own greatest gifts.

Book excerpt: This is a book about the 75 years of a very successful accountancy practice. They are 75 important years both in the history of the United Kingdom, encompassing the Second World War and all the recessions and periods of growth in the 60-year period following that war, and in the history of accountancy and how it has had to adapt to both the changes in accounting practices and in accounting technology. As you will see, the Price Bailey story is one of growth from a single partner in one office to 22 partners in seven offices, not only in East Anglia but in the City and West End of London as well as in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Price Bailey, which became a Limited Liability Partnership in 2004, is now the 29th biggest accountancy practice in the country. Its new Managing Director, Martin Clapson, is also Chairman of the European Board of the International Association of Professional Accountants (IAPA). Many people view accountants as a necessary adjunct to their life because the law of the land demands that financial dealings, whether personal or corporate, be properly assessed and recorded and that the correct tax, if any is due, be paid. There is no doubt that Price Bailey has always been meticulous in making sure this work is done properly and in due time. However, it has also always been the practice of the firm to carry out the above in an open and friendly manner and to offer more than the mere adding up of sums. As Richard Price, son of one of the original partners and a very long-serving member of Price Bailey, will tell you in the book, the firm has always made sure that they were close to the clients and often mixed with them socially. As you will also see, Price Bailey, especially in the last twelve years under the leadership of Peter Gillman, has greatly increased the services it can offer. Most recently, it is now authorised to give legal advice.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Broader Vision Acknowledgments are due, for the material used in the making of this little book, to the editors of The Continent, on whose pages many of the selections which make up the contents have ap peared. The poems are fugitives, gathered from many sources, some few of them never having been published before. The short prose articles have all appeared as editorial material in the columns of The Westminster and of The Continent. The little collection of Dr. Holmes's work has been prepared and edited by his daughter, at the request of many of his friends; and is now pub lished with the hope that in this way the influence of the {message that for forty years he preached, with tongue and with pen, may be made permanent and abiding. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.
