Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Broad Stone of Empire, Vol. 1: Problems of Crown Colony Administration With Records of Personal Experience It is getting to be generally recognised that the accepted classification of the constituent elements of the British Empire in three groups, - the United Kingdom, the Colonies and India, - is becoming obsolete. The laws of political and economic geography demand a more scientific classification in accordance with the natural factors of distinction between the temperate zones and the tropics, these factors having already determined a political cleavage between two groups of colonies under the designation of self-governing and Crown colonies. Download or read book The Broad Stone of Empire, Volume 2 written by Charles Bruce and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1910 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Charles Bruce (1836-1920) was a civil servant and colonial administrator who served for thirty-six years in various administrative and governing roles in Mauritius, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Guyana. These volumes, first published in 1910, contain Bruce's discussions of the major problems of colonial administration. He provides a detailed survey of the development of national and colonial policy from 1815 to 1868 and imperial policy from 1868 to 1872, illustrating the historical context of late nineteenth-century colonial administration. Bruce then discusses in detail topics of importance to colonial administrators, including Crown law, labour and health, illustrating solutions to problems from his considerable experience. These volumes were intended as a reference work for students of colonial administration, and provide a wealth of information on the organisation and administration of British colonies in the nineteenth century. Volume 2 contains his discussion of education, communications, the fiscal system and commerce.

Book Synopsis Triumph of the Expert by : Joseph Morgan Hodge
Download or read book Triumph of the Expert written by Joseph Morgan Hodge and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most striking feature of British colonialism in the twentieth century was the confidence it expressed in the use of science and expertise, especially when joined with the new bureaucratic capacities of the state, to develop natural and human resources of the empire. Triumph of the Expert is a history of British colonial doctrine and its contribution to the emergence of rural development and environmental policies in the late colonial and postcolonial period. Joseph Morgan Hodge examines the way that development as a framework of ideas and institutional practices emerged out of the strategic engagement between science and the state at the climax of the British Empire. Hodge looks intently at the structural constraints, bureaucratic fissures, and contradictory imperatives that beset and ultimately overwhelmed the late colonial development mission in sub-Saharan Africa, south and southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. Triumph of the Expert seeks to understand the quandaries that led up to the important transformation in British imperial thought and practice and the intellectual and administrative legacies it left behind.
Book Synopsis Science, race relations and resistance by : Douglas A. Lorimer
Download or read book Science, race relations and resistance written by Douglas A. Lorimer and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the dimensions of race, race relations and resistance, this book offers a new account of the British Empire’s greatest failure and its most disturbing legacy. Using a wide range of published and archival sources, this study of racial discourse from 1870 to 1914 argues that race, then as now, was a contested territory within the metropolitan culture. Based on a wide range of published and archival sources, this book uncovers the conflicting opinions that characterised late Victorian and Edwardian discourse on the ‘colour question’. It offers a revisionist account of race in science, and provides original studies of the invention of the language of race relations and of resistance to race-thinking led by radical abolitionists and persons of Asian and African descent living in the United Kingdom. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of race, colonialism and culture, and to a readership interested in the history of science and race, anti-slavery and humanitarian movements, and the roots of anti-racist resistance.

Book Synopsis A Stormy Petrel: The Life and Times of John Pope Hennessy by : P. Kevin MacKeown
Download or read book A Stormy Petrel: The Life and Times of John Pope Hennessy written by P. Kevin MacKeown and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many words have been used to describe John Pope Hennessy, the former governor of Hong Kong. “Controversial” is perhaps the briefest way to outline his character. Yet we may be guilty of ascribing modern ideas to our understanding of characters of the past. An Irish Catholic raised during the age of empire and rising nationalism, a devout Tory and Disraeli follower, a believer in both the benefits of empire and a patron of local talent in his postings, it is easy to view Pope Hennessy as a man of contradictions. This volume traces Pope Hennessy’s history from his early beginnings in famine Ireland to his attempts to rise through the ranks in London. It goes on to cover his early postings to Labuan, West Africa, and, of course, Hong Kong, as well as his final days with his family. His actions and his personality are laid bare for readers fo form their own opinions of one of Hong Kong’s most enigmatic governors. “As to Sir J. P. Hennessy, the less said the better. His acts speak powerfully enough. The centre of his world was he himself. But with all the crowd of dark and bright powers that were wrestling within him, he could not help doing some good…” - Dr Ernst Johann Eitel, Missionary, sinologist, and John Pope Hennessy’s private secretary
Book Synopsis John Locke, Territory, and Transmigration by : Brian Smith
Download or read book John Locke, Territory, and Transmigration written by Brian Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines John Locke as a theorist of migration, immigration, and the movement of peoples. It outlines the contours of the public discourse surrounding migration in the seventeenth century and situates Locke’s in-depth involvement in these debates. The volume presents a variety of undercurrents in Locke’s writing — his ideas on populationism, naturalization, colonization and the right to withdrawal, the plight of refugees, and territorial rights — which have great import in present-day debates about migration. Departing from the popular extant literature that sees Locke advocating for a strong right to exclude foreigners, the author proposes a Lockean theory of immigration that recognizes the fundamental right to emigrate, thus catering to an age wrought with terrorism, xenophobia and economic inequality. A unique and compelling contribution, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of political theory, political philosophy, history of international politics, international relations, international political economy, public policy, seventeenth century English history, migration and citizenship studies, and moral philosophy.
