Book Synopsis New Flora of the British Isles by : Clive Stace
Download or read book New Flora of the British Isles written by Clive Stace and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 1267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1991, New Flora of the British Isles has become established as the standard work on the identification of the wild vascular plants of the British Isles. The Flora remains unique in many features, including its full coverage of all British wild plants, its user-friendly organisation, and its specially compiled keys and descriptions. This new edition includes the addition of more than 160 species, so that 4,800 taxa are now covered in varying degrees of detail. It also incorporates the new molecular system of classification based on DNA sequences. Furthermore, it includes 1600 species illustrations, rewritten distributions and an overhaul of the designation of degrees of rarity, with the introduction of a third, less rare, category. These revisions should ensure that this third edition remains the essential reference source for all taxonomists, ecologists, conservationists, plant hunters and biogeographers, whether they be researchers, teachers, students or amateurs.

Download or read book The British Flora, Vol. 1 of 2 written by William Jackson Hooker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Flora, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising the Phaenogamous, or Flowering Plants, and the Ferns The object which the Author proposed to himself, in preparing a new Flora of the British Empire, was of a. Twofold nature lstly, to provide the young Student with a description of our native plants, arranged according to the simplest method; and 2dly, to afiord to the more experienced Botanist, a manual, that should be useful in the field as well as in the closet. In regard to the first object, the experience of nearly an hundred years has proved to every unprejudiced mind, that no system has appeared which can be compared to that of the immortal Swede for the faciliq with which it enables any one, hitherto unprac tised in Botany, to arrive at a knowledge of the Genus and Species of a plant. - The Linnaean Method is, therefore, here still, though not exclusively, adopted. Download or read book The Cambridge British Flora, Vol. 2 written by Charles Edward Moss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cambridge British Flora, Vol. 2: Salicaceae to Chenopodiacae, Text It is a truism to state that knowledge has no finality; but there is need to emphasise the fact that the knowledge of even a limited flora like that of the British Islands is not only now in a state of flux, but always must be, so long as botanists continue to investigate it. Discoveries are frequently made of plants which, though known to the botanists of other countries, have not previously been distinguished in the British Islands; and occasionally plants are found in these islands which have previously escaped observation altogether. The knowledge of the distribution of the members of the British flora is being constantly augmented, whilst, at the same time, it is being rendered more precise. The knowledge too of the nomenclature of British plants is constantly being increased; and unfortunately this knowledge sometimes necessitates the adoption of an unfamiliar name. We hope that this increased nomenclatorial knowledge will eventually result in a greater degree of stabilisation; but we regret to record our belief that finality in the names of plants is no more possible than finality in any other branch of knowledge. The work will be completed in about ten volumes of which the present (volume II) is the first to appear. This will be followed by Volume III: the order of appearance of the remaining volumes will be announced in due course.
