Book excerpt: This book tracks the changes in government involvement in Indigneous children’s education over the nineteenth century, drawing on case studies from the Caribbean, Australia and South Africa. Schools were pivotal in the production and reproduction of racial difference in the colonies of settlement. Between 1833 and 1880, there were remarkable changes in thinking about education in Britain and the Empire with it increasingly seen as a government responsibility. At the same time, children’s needs came to be seen as different to those of their parents, and childhood was approached as a time to make interventions into Indigenous people’s lives. This period also saw shifts in thinking about race. Members of the public, researchers, missionaries and governments discussed the function of education, considering whether it could be used to further humanitarian or settler colonial aims. Underlying these questions were anxieties regarding the status of Indigenous people in newly colonised territories: the successful education of their children could show their potential for equality.

Book excerpt: The anticipated reduction in the duration of architecture education in the UK and across Europe has encouraged a sense of collective openness towards exploring other models of professional education delivery. There's never been a better time to be thoughtfully innovative and take the initiative. This book provides a much needed debate about the future of architectural education, placing it within its unique historic tradition and raising fundamental questions such as who should be teaching architecture? Where should they be situated and should it be viewed as an interdisciplinary, rather than silo-based subject? This is not just a book for academics. It comprises voices from those who are doing as well as talking; students, recent graduates, practitioners, educators and developers, consolidating academic and well as practice-based evidence into a set of actionable insights which should question, provoke and inspire...

Providing a unique and detailed examination of the work of the founding British scholars of research in comparative education, British Scholars of Comparative Education considers the legacy of these key figures and emphasises the importance of understanding their achievements. The advancement of research in comparative education has long been driven by the work of key scholars, ensuring it remains a lively area of educational research. This book highlights the pivotal role played by each scholar in driving a progression through humanistic and scientific approaches to new epistemological traditions within the field of comparative education. This in turn reveals critical historical-epistemological transitions that have had lasting impacts on the field. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, this volume will be of great interest to researchers, academics, and scholars in comparative and international education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides an overall review and analysis of the history of education and of its key research priorities in the British context. It investigates the extent to which education has contributed historically to social change in Britain, how it has itself been moulded by society, and the needs and opportunities that remain for further research in this general area. Contributors review the strengths and limitations of the historical literature on social change in British education over the past forty years, ascertain what this literature tells us about the relationship between education and social change, and map areas and themes for future historical research. They consider both formal and informal education, different levels and stages of the education system, the process and experience of education, and regional and national perspectives. They also engage with broader discussions about theory and methodology. The collection covers a large amount of historical territory, from the sixteenth century to the present, including the emergence of the learned professions, the relationship between society and the economy, the role of higher technological education, the historical experiences of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the social significance of teaching and learning, and the importance of social class, gender, ethnicity, and disability. It involves personal biography no less than broad national and international movements in its considerations. This book will be a major contribution to research as well as a general resource in the history and historiography of education in Britain.

Book excerpt: Edward Aitken-Davies (1899-1981) served as an Education Control Officer in the British Zone of occupied Germany from the early summer of 1945 until December 1949. He thus experienced the implementation of policy in the Zone from the very beginnings of the occupation until the founding of the Federal Republic of German y in 1949. During the period 1945 to 1947 he wrote weekly letters home to his mother. Those letters, together with the many speeches he gave in Germany during his time as a leading British officer in the Hanover region have not hitherto been available to researchers but can now be made accessible in edited form. The letters are placed in the context of developments in British policy and with explanatory notes on the detail. Taken together, his letters and other documents provide insights into the day-to-day lives of the impressive group of individuals who oversaw the development of education in Germany from post-war chaos to the reform and stability which restored the education system of the country to a pre-eminent status in Europe.

Do British higher education institutions still exercise autonomous control over their development? In this book, these questions are pursued through a three-pronged strategy. This book will have lessons for those examining higher education on a comparative/international basis. It is a serious piece of analysis i.e. it is purposefully non-polemical, and it is well-written, non-jargonised and accessible.
