Book excerpt: The future of Christianity depends on how we master the art of understanding and giving grace. At the end of the twentieth century, Philip Yancey wrote his classic bestseller What's So Amazing About Grace? as a testament to the power of God's grace and as a rallying cry to the Christian church to see the acting out of grace as its single most important contribution to the world. Now, in this 6-session, video-based participant's guide (DVD/video streaming sold separately), Yancey reexamines—with fresh material and new stories—the scandalous power of grace so that groups and individuals can reflect upon, share, and extend this amazing gift of Christ in new and transformative ways. In this study, you'll discover: The extent of God's love and what it means for us. Why the church seems to have lost the gift of grace-giving and why the world apart from the church can't offer it at all. What it would look like for us to truly understand, receive, and give the gift that God gives so generously to us. Yancey offers compelling and true portraits of grace's life-changing power. He searches for its presence in his own life and in the church. He asks how Christians today can contend graciously with moral issues that threaten all they hold dear. And he challenges each of us to become living answers to a world that desperately wants to know, "what's so amazing about grace?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OVER TWO MILLION COPIES SOLD! It's the most powerful force in the universe, our only hope for love and forgiveness, and a foretaste of eternal life: amazing, radical, life-changing grace. Millions of lives have been changed by award-winning author Philip Yancey's startling exploration of grace at street level. Grace is the one thing the world can't duplicate, the healing force we need, and the key to transforming a broken world. In this revised and updated edition of his personal and provocative book, Yancey offers true portraits of grace's life-changing power. These stories, set in the midst of life's stark realities, evoke such questions as: If grace is God's love for the undeserving, how do I get it? How well are we dispensing grace to a world that knows far more of strife and unforgiveness than it does of mercy? Can grace make a difference in the midst of such atrocities as the Nazi holocaust, and how can it withstand the brutality of hate? With powerful stories, rich theology, and practical suggestions, Yancey challenges us to become living answers to a world that desperately needs to know, What's So Amazing About Grace?

Book excerpt: Grace is a word frequently heard around Churches and Christians, but for all of its usage, it is one of the least understood truths of the Bible. If I ask someone what the difference is between the Law and grace or what is the difference between the Old and New Testaments, I am frequently met with a blank look. If asked what grace is, the usual response is it is God's free gift of salvation. This is true, but the Law is also a free gift from God given to us through Moses. However, the Law does not provide us with a way to salvation; it only points to our need for salvation. The idea of grace being a free gift means that God's grace cannot be earned nor is it something that can be merited or deserved. It is distinct from the Law of God because under the Law we are expected to perform perfectly for acceptance, while those under grace are urged to perform because we have already been forgiven and accepted by Christ. Better yet, we are never held to a requirement for perfection because we are accpted in Christ just as we are. God has told us much more about grace and living the Christian life under grace than to simply tell us it is a free gift. Actually, grace is our ultimate gift for eternity, and God has said so much about grace and it's place in every Christian's life in His Word, the Bible that we should all be experts by now. Dr. Bryce Jessup, President Emeritus of William Jessup University, describes Basic Grace in this way. "David Ashwell's book, Making the Grace Connection, is a book rooted in scripture, flows through his life experiences, and grabs the heart of the reader to explore personal application. The material deals with the theoligical implications of grace and how as humans we frequently distort it in our contemporary church life. The book provides encouragement to those who feel trapped in their guilt and are given to self inflicted despair. Anyone who reads this book will be empowered in some fresh ways to grow in Christ. However, those who have struggled with a legalistic journey, or a faith walk that was disconnected from fulfillment should read this book to help in the challenge of balancing grace and truth." I couldn't have said it half as well as did Dr. Jessup. I was forced [in a most loving way] to write this book to pass on what God has been teaching me about grace these past forty years. So please hop aboard and see for yourself! I promise you won't be sorry!

Book excerpt: Whip-smart, hilarious, and unapologetically honest, Rachael Lucas's The State of Grace is a heartwarming story of one girl trying to work out where she fits in, and whether she even wants to. “Sometimes I feel like everyone else was handed a copy of the rules for life and mine got lost.” Grace is autistic and has her own way of looking at the world. She's got a horse and a best friend who understand her, and that's pretty much all she needs. But when Grace kisses Gabe and things start to change at home, the world doesn't make much sense to her any more. Suddenly everything threatens to fall apart, and it's up to Grace to fix it on her own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Lisa Velthouse’s whole life, Christianity had been about getting things right. Obeying her parents. Not drinking. Not cursing. Not having premarital sex. Vowing to save her first kiss until she got engaged, even writing a book called . . . well, Saving My First Kiss. (This, it turns out, does not actually help a girl get a date.) Yet after two decades of trying to earn God’s okay, she found her faith was lonely, empty, and unsatisfying. So she turned to more discipline, of course: fasting! By giving up her favorite foods—sweets—Lisa hoped to somehow discover true sweetness and meaning in her relationship with God. Until, one night at a wedding, she denied herself the cake but failed in such a different, unexpected, and world-rocking way that it challenged everything she thought she knew about God and herself. Craving Grace is the true story of a faith dramatically changed: how in one woman’s life God used a bitter heart, a broken promise, and the sweetness of honey to reveal the stunning wonder that is grace.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A meditation on sense-making when there’s no sense to be made, on letting go when we can’t hold on, and on being unafraid even when we’re terrified.”—Lucy Kalanithi “Belongs on the shelf alongside other terrific books about this difficult subject, like Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air and Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal.”—Bill Gates NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY REAL SIMPLE Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School with a modest Christian upbringing, but she specializes in the study of the prosperity gospel, a creed that sees fortune as a blessing from God and misfortune as a mark of God’s disapproval. At thirty-five, everything in her life seems to point toward “blessing.” She is thriving in her job, married to her high school sweetheart, and loves life with her newborn son. Then she is diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. The prospect of her own mortality forces Kate to realize that she has been tacitly subscribing to the prosperity gospel, living with the conviction that she can control the shape of her life with “a surge of determination.” Even as this type of Christianity celebrates the American can-do spirit, it implies that if you “can’t do” and succumb to illness or misfortune, you are a failure. Kate is very sick, and no amount of positive thinking will shrink her tumors. What does it mean to die, she wonders, in a society that insists everything happens for a reason? Kate is stripped of this certainty only to discover that without it, life is hard but beautiful in a way it never has been before. Frank and funny, dark and wise, Kate Bowler pulls the reader deeply into her life in an account she populates affectionately with a colorful, often hilarious retinue of friends, mega-church preachers, relatives, and doctors. Everything Happens for a Reason tells her story, offering up her irreverent, hard-won observations on dying and the ways it has taught her to live. Praise for Everything Happens for a Reason “I fell hard and fast for Kate Bowler. Her writing is naked, elegant, and gripping—she’s like a Christian Joan Didion. I left Kate’s story feeling more present, more grateful, and a hell of a lot less alone. And what else is art for?”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior and president of Together Rising

In this revision of a foundational work, John Piper reveals how grace is not only God’s undeserved gift to us in the past, but also God’s power to make good happen for us today, tomorrow, and forever. True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace. It’s talked about a lot from church pulpits and often serves as the climax of testimonies, but what does it really mean? Is it really as simple as praying for forgiveness, or there more to really receiving grace? And what about grace and forgiveness toward others—and toward yourself? In this young adult adaptation of New York Times bestselling author Lee Strobel’s The Case for Grace, your questions are explored and answered from all angles, using Lee’s personal story of struggling to find grace for himself, as well as interviews with a wide array of people who were radically changed by God’s grace alone. The wild party that is engraved on Instagram, which you pray future employers never find. The comment your friend made about you that went way over the line. The guilt you still carry for a mistake you made three years ago. Those things don’t magically go away or become easily forgotten. So when you hear about Christian grace and forgiveness, and how it’s a prayer away, that can be a little hard to accept sometimes. Even if that clean-slate grace would be a great thing to have for yourself, or toward the people in your life. The good news is, you’re not alone in your struggle to “get” grace. Inside this book is an exploration of the hows and whys behind God’s amazing grace, as well as revealing stories from people who experienced that gift in remarkable ways—including people who believed they’d been forgotten, murders convinced they weren’t worth forgiving, and Lee Strobel’s own account of searching for grace his entire life. Because grace is available and can change your life, if you just accept it. The Case for Grace Student Edition: Presents real-life stories and experiences from a diverse group of people who have experienced incredible instances of grace firsthand Tackles questions teens and young adults thirteen and up often ask and encounter, so they can better understand what grace really is and how it applies to their own lives Unpacks the Bible’s teachings on grace and applies them to today’s world Can also be used in the classroom, in group studies, or as part of a religious studies or comparison class Pairs well with The Case for Christ Student Edition, The Case for a Creator Student Edition, The Case for Faith Student Edition, and The Case for Miracles Student Edition
