This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the species of the families Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae (Curculionoidea, Coleoptera) of Continental Europe north of 52 ° N and of the British Isles. 50 species are included. For each species a short diagnosis and detailed information on the taxonomy, nomenclature, geographic distribution, life habits, hosts and parasites is given. The book contains keys from family level to species and is finely illustrated with over 100 black and white drawings, almost all of which are originals drawn by the author and furthermore with four plates showing 35 representative species skilfully depicted in colour by Birgitte Rubæk. The introductory part provides general information on the taxonomic history, morphology of all life stages, life history and economic importance, comments on phylogeny and classification and some practical hints on how to collect, preserve and identify specimens. In addition lists of hosts and parasites, a catalogue of occurrence by province for the 33 species found in Fennoscandia and Denmark, an extensive list of literature and an index are given. The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive systematic treatment of the North European Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae based on richly illustrated identification keys and descriptions combined with up-to-date information on the distribution and biology of individual species. Volume 34 of this series treated the Brentidae. These volumes thus complete the treatment of the four orthocerous weevil families (weevils with straight antennae) within the superfamily Curculionoidea, and are indispensable for anyone - professional or amateur - working with or interested in weevils.

Book excerpt: Brentid beetles are in Northern Europe practically equivalent to the speciose genus Apion, a group of small, rostrate, phytophagous beetles of weevil-like appearance, but easily separated from genuine curculionid weevils by the short scape to the antennae. This book, written by one of the foremost experts on European Apion, identifies and describes the 134 species of brentids known from the British Isles and Continental Europe north of 52 (0)N. For each species is given up-to-date information on the taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, life habits, food plants and parasites. Occurrence by provinces is documented for the 94 species found in Fennoscandia and Denmark. The introductory part provides general information on the group's taxonomic history, morphology of all life stages, life history and economic importance, and some practical hints on how to collect, preserve and identify specimens. The book is richly illustrated with original line drawings by the author and eight plates showing no less than 58 representative species skillfully depicted in colour by the coleopterist, Dr Michael Hansen. Additional features include lists of food plants and parasites, an extensive list of literature and an index.

The book discusses the biological study of beetles; some skeletal peculiarities and the internal structures of the adults. The text also describes some structural features of larvae and pupae; food, digestion and the alimentary canal; and blood, osmoregulation, reserves, excretion and endocrine organs. The locomotion, respiration and energetics; the senses; and the cuticular properties, appearance, color and luminosity are also considered. The book further tackles the adult and larval behavior; the development and life-cycles; and the cytology and genetics. The text also looks into water beetles; special habitats; predation and defence; and symbiotic and parasitic relations. The ecological triangle: beetles, fungi and trees; and herbivorous beetles are also looked into. The book also discusses the role of beetles as ecological indicators; and the evolutionary history of beetles. Entomologists, ecologists, and biologists will find the book useful.

Book excerpt: Volume 8 of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera provides a list of all taxa of the bulk of the family Curculionidae and of Cryptolaryngidae reported from the biogeographical realm covered. For the genus and species-groups taxa all available names are given, and for the valid species and subspecies the distribution per country is shown, including more details for endemic taxa. Type species are listed for all genus-group names. The work is based on verification of the primary sources, and the respective references are given. Particular chapters deal with the actual impediments of taxonomy, nomenclatural and taxonomic problems, and corrections to previously published volumes of the Catalogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To some potential readers of this book the description of Biological System atics as an art may seem outdated and frankly wrong. For most people art is subjective and unconstrained by universal laws. While one picture, play or poem may be internally consistent comparison between different art products is meaningless except by way of the individual artists. On the other hand modern Biological Systematics - particularly phenetics and cladistics - is offered as objective and ultimately governed by universal laws. This implies that classifications of different groups of organisms, being the products of systematics, should be comparable irrespective of authorship. Throughout this book Minelli justifies his title by developing the theme that biological classifications are, in fact, very unequal in their expressions of the pattern and processes of the natural world. Specialists are imbibed with their own groups and tend to establish a consensus of what constitutes a species or a genus, or whether it should be desirable to recognize sub species, cultivars etc. Ornithologists freely recognize subspecies and rarely do bird genera contain more than 10 species. On the other hand some coleopterists and botanists work with genera with over 1500 species. This asymmetry may reflect a biological reality; it may express a working practicality, or simply an historical artefact (older erected genera often contain more species). Rarely are these phenomena questioned.

Book excerpt: This book is the first of four volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treat the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With approximately 350,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. The beetle volumes will meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages (including anatomy), phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book excerpt: In terms of quantity and breadth, the Smithsonian Institution’s collection of longhorned woodboring beetles is one of the most important in the world. The effort to establish and describe this collection began as early as 1889, when the Smithsonian hired its first coleopterist (who was also only the second salaried entomologist at the Institution). In the years that followed, the collection grew thanks to the work of not only Smithsonian and U.S. Department of Agriculture entomologists, but also passionate amateur coleopterists who collected thousands of beetle specimens as they traveled the world for their professional occupations and then donated their unique collections to the Smithsonian. By 1957, the collection included nearly 200,000 specimens from around the world. Longhorned Woodboring Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae and Disteniidae): Primary Types of the Smithsonian Institution is the first complete catalog of Coleoptera primary types housed at the Smithsonian and includes stunning full-color images of each type specimen. The product of more than a decade of curatorial research and care, it reaffirms the superior international status of this truly remarkable collection.

Book excerpt: "A scholarly account of the vernacular names researched and recorded in both Latin and Arabic scripts by Pehr Forskål on his expedition to Egypt and Yemen in 1761-67, published posthumously in 1775. Much modern research has been done on the scientific names of the plants he collected, many of which were newly discovered species; but until now less attention has been paid to the notes on vernacular names and uses. This account rectifies that deficiency."--Amazon.com.
