Book Synopsis Border Boss by : J. Gilberto Quezada
Download or read book Border Boss written by J. Gilberto Quezada and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2001-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 1, 1937, Manuel B. Bravo was sworn in as county judge of Zapata County, a post he would hold for twenty years. In Border Boss: Manuel B. Bravo and Zapata County, J. Gilberto Quezada delineates Bravo’s political career in the Democratic Party and examines his role in some of the important issues of his day, especially Falcon Dam. During Bravo’s years in office, he worked and corresponded with many Texas and national politicians, including James Allred, Lloyd Bentsen, Kika de la Garza, Ralph Yarborough, and, most prominently, Lyndon Johnson. The association between Bravo and Johnson began with the special Senate election of 1941 and is reflected in the more than fifty letters between the two in Bravo's personal papers. In Johnson's 1948 Senate runoff against Coke Stevenson, voting irregularities were alleged in Zapata County when the election returns from Precinct No. 3 were reported missing. Quezada analyzes the Bravo papers for any evidence that Bravo and Johnson had arranged the disappearance and offers possible alternative explanations. From the 1930s to the 1950s Zapata County was one of six South Texas counties where the Tejano majority dominated local politics and held most public offices. Bravo became known as one of the "Mexican bosses" of South Texas, but Quezada draws a more nuanced picture of bossism than has been presented previously, analyzing the role of influential leading families but looking as well at the degree of economic integration into the state and nation as factors in how bossism developed. Those interested in Mexican-American studies and politics and bossism in South Texas will appreciate the window onto South Texas politics and Tejano culture this biography gives.
Book Synopsis Varney the Vampire (Vol.1-3) by : Thomas Peckett Prest
Download or read book Varney the Vampire (Vol.1-3) written by Thomas Peckett Prest and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-16 with total page 1697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varney the Vampire (Vol.1-3) stands as a monumental anthology within the gothic literature panorama, bridging the realms of supernatural folklore and the burgeoning Victorian anxieties surrounding modernity and morality. This collection, encompassing an array of narratives from the macabre to the romantic, showcases the diversity of literary styles and the depth of thematic exploration characteristic of the period. The works within these volumes are pivotal in tracing the evolution of the vampire myth in Western literature, offering readers a comprehensive view of the social and cultural undercurrents that shaped such tales. The anthology draws from the prolific outputs of Thomas Peckett Prest and James Malcolm Rymer, whose collaborative efforts are often overshadowed by their contemporary, Bram Stoker, yet remain crucial in the groundwork of vampiric literature. Their backgrounds as writers for penny dreadfuls allowed them to capture the zeitgeist of Victorian society, blending sensationalism with acute observations of human nature and societal change. This collection, therefore, encompasses not only stories of the supernatural but also serves as a commentary on the fears and fascinations of the era it was born in. Varney the Vampire (Vol.1-3) is an indispensable resource for those interested in the origins and evolution of vampire mythology and its intersection with cultural, social, and historical discourses of the 19th century. Readers are invited to delve into this collection not only for its entertainment value but also for its ability to illuminate the complexities of human nature, morality, and the supernatural. Through its diverse range of narrative voices and styles, this anthology offers a unique opportunity to engage with the foundational texts that continue to influence gothic literature and horror genres today.

Book Synopsis The Life of William Ewart Gladstone (Vol. 1-3) by : John Morley
Download or read book The Life of William Ewart Gladstone (Vol. 1-3) written by John Morley and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 1139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a 3-volume record of life and work of one of Britain's greatest leaders of all times William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Gladstone was a British statesman and Liberal politician who, in a career lasting over 60 years, served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, serving over 12 years. Gladstone's own political doctrine – which emphasized equality of opportunity and opposition to trade protectionism – came to be known as Gladstonian liberalism. His popularity amongst the working-class earned him the sobriquet "The People's William". In 1868, Gladstone became Prime Minister for the first time. Many reforms were passed during his first ministry, including the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of secret voting. After electoral defeat in 1874, Gladstone resigned as leader of the Liberal Party. After the 1880 general election, Gladstone formed his second ministry (1880-1885), which saw the passage of the Third Reform Act as well as crises in Egypt and Ireland, where his government passed repressive measures but also improved the legal rights of Irish tenant farmers. Back in office in early 1886, Gladstone proposed home rule for Ireland but was defeated in the House of Commons. The resulting split in the Liberal Party helped keep them out of office – with one short break – for 20 years. Gladstone formed his last government in 1892, at the age of 82. The Government of Ireland Bill 1893 passed through the Commons but was defeated in the House of Lords in 1893. Gladstone left office in March 1894, aged 84, as both the oldest person to serve as Prime Minister and the only Prime Minister to have served four terms.
