Book excerpt: From Panthers to Promise Keepers draws on intimate observations of the men and networks who were involved in what some have called Othe menOs movementO and tells us why these networks mattered. Focusing on the decades between 1950 and 2000, it argues that while public, structural change is necessary for gender equality, getting men involved in efforts at social justice may well depend on their making changes with respect to feelings and with respect to their unconscious fears and anxieties as well.

Book excerpt: Exiled from his people, a Cheyenne fighter searches for a war The party of young Cheyenne warriors is returning home from a successful hunt when their leader, Panther Burn, spies a wayward Creek scout. Hungry for the prestige of battle, he chases the Creek into the woods, dragging his fellow warriors straight into an ambush. Two die, and for his impulsiveness, Panther Burn is banished from the tribe. But his legend does not end there. He takes shelter with the Southern Cheyenne, and finds that their attempts at modernization amount to an abandonment of tradition and enslavement to the white man. Over the next decades, the United States will try to herd the Cheyenne into reservations and destroy their way of life, and Panther Burn will become their champion. Although his battle with the Creek ended in disgrace, this warrior will find glory at last.

Book excerpt: Amid rising tensions that will tear apart the United States, Florida in the 1830s is in turmoil. The Seminole Indians have been ordered to leave their ancestral lands for reservations in Kansas and Oklahoma, but they instead retreat into the swamps of the Everglades, where they are joined by slaves fleeing cruel plantation owners. One such slave is Calida, who once saved the life of Panther, war chief of the Egret Clan, and who has joined his people in hiding after seeing her master, Reddin Croon, brutally murder his wife. Despite their differences, Calida and Panther are drawn to each other, and though each denies it, they are soon deeply in love. The army has come to round up the Indians, using whatever force is necessary. As war chief, Panther is a special target. But so is Calida, for Reddin Croon has joined the army so that he can find and destroy the only witness to his terrible crime.

Book excerpt: Rap and Politics maps out fifty years of political and musical development by exploring three specific moments of local discourse, each a response to failures by local, state, and national governments to address police brutality, violence, poverty, and poor social conditions in Oakland, California and the surrounding Bay Area. First, in the mid-1960s, Black youth responded to repressive political and socioeconomic factors in West Oakland by founding the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, whose representation of violence and community aid, as well as its radical and militant approach to Black Nationalism, became a foundational discourse that shaped the development of rap music in the region. Second, from the collapse of the Party in the early 1980s through the 1990s, gangster rap emerged as a form of political expression among local youth, who drew heavily on radical and militant elements of Panther discourse in their lyrics and artwork. Third, hyphy music in the mid-1990s to early 2000s continued these radical discourses and also incorporated coordinated, subversive public behavior to the mix. The result was a critique of endemic problems facing the local Black community, but also an infectious subgenre of party music that gained mainstream popularity. Overall, this study shows that the specific types of representation created to resist problems of racism and poverty in Oakland is actually key to understanding other rap undergrounds, grassroots subcultures, and social movements elsewhere. In the process, Rap and Politics offers readers a new model focused on the development of settings, representation, movements, discourse banks, and impact within underground rap scenes.

Book excerpt: Dystopian fiction captivates us by depicting future worlds at once eerily similar and shockingly foreign to our own. This collection of new essays presents some of the most recent scholarship on a genre whose popularity has surged dramatically since the 1990s. Contributors explore such novels as The Lord of the Flies, The Heart Goes Last, The Giver and The Strain Trilogy as social critique, revealing how they appeal to the same impulse as utopian fiction: the desire for an idealized yet illusory society in which evil is purged and justice prevails.
