Book excerpt: In this beautiful children’s picture book by Vivek Shraya, author of the acclaimed God Loves Hair, a five-year-old South Asian boy becomes fascinated with his mother’s bindi, the red dot commonly worn by Hindu women to indicate the point at which creation begins, and wishes to have one of his own. Rather than chastise her son, she agrees to it, and teaches him about its cultural significance, allowing the boy to discover the magic of the bindi, which in turn gives him permission to be more fully himself. Beautifully illustrated by Rajni Perera, The Boy & the Bindi is a joyful celebration of gender and cultural difference. Ages 3 to 6. Book Synopsis Terry; Or, She ought to have been a Boy by : Rosa M. Gilbert
Download or read book Terry; Or, She ought to have been a Boy written by Rosa M. Gilbert and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rosa M. Gilbert's novel 'Terry; Or, She ought to have been a Boy,' the author delves into the Victorian era's restrictive gender roles and their impact on society. The book narrates the story of Terry, a young girl who defies traditional gender norms by engaging in typically male activities. Through beautifully crafted prose and intricate character development, Gilbert critiques the limitations placed on women during this time period, shedding light on the societal constraints that governed gender identity. The novel's feminist undertones and exploration of gender issues make it a significant contribution to the literary canon of the Victorian era. Rosa M. Gilbert, a writer known for her progressive views on gender equality, likely drew inspiration from the societal norms of her time to craft 'Terry.' As a female author in a male-dominated literary landscape, Gilbert's work challenges conventional ideas about gender and identity, offering a fresh perspective on women's experiences in the 19th century. I highly recommend 'Terry; Or, She ought to have been a Boy' to readers interested in Victorian literature, gender studies, and feminist critiques of society. Gilbert's insightful portrayal of Terry's journey will captivate audiences and spark important conversations about sexism and gendered expectations.

Download or read book What's to Become of the Boy?, Or, Something to Do with Books written by Heinrich Böll and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981, Heinrich Boll returned to the streets of his childhood in this remarkable collection of nonfiction. This volume captures the musings of a mature Boll as he looks back with fondness and with anger on his formative years: as a student who avoided school but lived for his education on the street; and as a young man forced to grapple with the moral horror that was Hitler. What's to Become of the Boy - superbly translated by Leila Vennewitz - provides uncommon insight into Boll's maturation as an author and as a man.

Book Synopsis The Boy in the Black Suit by : Jason Reynolds
Download or read book The Boy in the Black Suit written by Jason Reynolds and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book Just when seventeen-year-old Matt thinks he can’t handle one more piece of terrible news, he meets a girl who’s dealt with a lot more—and who just might be able to clue him in on how to rise up when life keeps knocking him down—in this “vivid, satisfying, and ultimately upbeat tale of grief, redemption, and grace” (Kirkus Reviews) from the Coretta Scott King – John Steptoe Award–winning author of When I Was the Greatest. Matt wears a black suit every day. No, not because his mom died—although she did, and it sucks. But he wears the suit for his gig at the local funeral home, which pays way better than the Cluck Bucket, and he needs the income since his dad can’t handle the bills (or anything, really) on his own. So while Dad’s snagging bottles of whiskey, Matt’s snagging fifteen bucks an hour. Not bad. But everything else? Not good. Then Matt meets Lovey. Crazy name, and she’s been through more crazy stuff than he can imagine. Yet Lovey never cries. She’s tough. Really tough. Tough in the way Matt wishes he could be. Which is maybe why he’s drawn to her, and definitely why he can’t seem to shake her. Because there’s nothing more hopeful than finding a person who understands your loneliness—and who can maybe even help take it away.
