Book excerpt: Recorded between 1710 and 1777, the Bowyer ledgers offer a vast store of new information concerning authorship, book production, and distribution in eighteenth-century London. More than five-thousand works by one thousand authors were commissioned during that time. The ledgers record what happened as the text moved through the printing-house, noting such particulars as paper, types, format, corrections, and number printed. This edition of the Bowyer ledgers presents the records themselves in photofacsimile on microfiche, accompanied by a volume of editorial apparatus, which includes an essay on the nature and function of the ledgers, and a chronological checklist of works printed by the Bowyers, an index of authors and titles, and a topical index of equipment, materials, and processes.

Download or read book Book Parts written by Dennis Duncan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would an anatomy of the book look like? There is the main text, of course, the file that the author proudly submits to their publisher. But around this, hemming it in on the page or enclosing it at the front and back of the book, there are dozens of other texts — page numbers and running heads, copyright statements and errata lists — each possessed of particular conventions, each with their own lively histories. To consider these paratexts — recalling them from the margins, letting them take centre stage — is to be reminded that no book is the sole work of the author whose name appears on the cover; rather, every book is the sum of a series of collaborations. It is to be reminded, also, that not everything is intended for us, the readers. There are sections that are solely directed at others — binders, librarians, lawyers — parts of the book that, if they are working well, are working discreetly, like a theatrical prompt, whispering out of the audience's ear-shot Book Parts is a bold and imaginative intervention in the fast growing field of book history: it pulls the book apart. Over twenty-two chapters, Book Parts tells the story of the components of the book: from title pages to endleaves; from dust jackets to indexes — and just about everything in between. Book Parts covers a broad historical range that runs from the pre-print era to the digital, bringing together the expertise of some of the most exciting scholars working on book history today in order to shine a new light on these elements hiding in plain sight in the books we all read.

Book Synopsis A Dictionary of Members of the Dublin Book Trade 1550-1800 by : Mary Pollard
Download or read book A Dictionary of Members of the Dublin Book Trade 1550-1800 written by Mary Pollard and published by OUP/The Bibliographical Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary attempts in nearly 2,200 entries to cover all workers in the various branches of the Dublin book trade until the Act of Union in 1800. All grades of workers from apprentice to master, and papermakers, engravers, hawkers and other peripheral traders are considered, as well as the all-important printers and booksellers. Entries naturally vary from one or two lines to one or two pages in length. The aim is to illustrate the working life of each subject by reference to contemporary sources such as records of the stationer's Guild, state papers, imprints, newspaper advertisements, customers' accounts, etc, with documentation for each statement made. Entries will thus give practical clues to dating undated books, as well as provide a basis for further research into individual traders' work and the Dublin trade as a whole. Some account of the history and organization of the Dublin Guild of St Luke (cutlers, painter-stainers, and stationers) appears as introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a ten-year supplement to the six volumes already published in the series Index to British Literary Biography, fully indexed for consistency with earlier volumes. The series provides a comprehensive record of the writings that describe and study the history of the printed book in Britain, and works of bibliography and textual criticism from the earliest times. The period covered by this volume was bibliographically very active, witnessing a great renewal of interest in the history of the book. The volume has seven main sections: "General Bibliographies of and Guides to British Literature," "General and Period Bibliography," "Regional Bibliography," "Book Production and Distribution," "Forms, Genres, and Subjects," and "Authors". Complete information about each book or journal article is provided in standard form, and in many instances objective annotations are given, affording additional access to the items through a very detailed index.
Download or read book Miscellanies written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan Edition of the Works. This book was released on 1997 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, first published as a three-volume set in 1743, consists in its entirety of a major work of fiction, The history of the Life of the Late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Jonathan Wild takes its title from the `thief-taker' and gang-leader of that name who was hanged in 1725, but in Fielding's hands, the history of Wild is transformed into a mock-hostorical work of sustained irony aimed at all who would be `great men'. The general introduction to this edition sets the novel against its historical and biographical background and argues against the view, common since the mid-nineteenth century, that it is a personal satire directed at the figure of Sir Robert Walpole. In both the general and the textual introductions, the editors also offer a fresh view on questions about the date and history of the work's composition. Full explanatory notes and commentary place Fielding's allusions and details in their contemporary context. As in previous volumes of the Weslyan Edition, this provides critical, unmodernized text, based on the Greg-Bowers `Rationale of Copy-text'. The version is that of the first edition, with an appendix giving all variants in wording and presentation in the 1754 revision. In his introduction the textual editor lays out the rationale for his choice of version. This volume also includes, for the first time in modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by the textual editor.
