Download or read book Somewhere over the Rainbow written by Patricia Foster and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Story, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, is a human and personal story. Patricia's Memoir covers much of her life, and of the Twentieth Century, including the Post War Years, seen from a young person's perspective. This account of her early life is vivid, it will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. The style is conversational, and is all the more credible for it's lack of exaggeration. This is a straightforward story, well told. It tells of amazing Divine Interventions, of Spiritual Guides, Helpers and Guardian Angels, who have accompanied Patricia through every step of her journey. This book will give hope and comfort to the bereaved, the sick and the lonely. Patricia sadly lost her beloved Husband Ken in October 2009, after a very happy marriage lasting 54 years. This book is almost a poem to Ken. But he has never left her, for there isn no death, as her story will prove. This is a moving memorial to a fine man in Ken, a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother. Gratitude is the heart's memory, and my heart remembers.
Book Synopsis Feet on the Street by : Roy Blount, Jr.
Download or read book Feet on the Street written by Roy Blount, Jr. and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Betcha I can tell ya / Where ya / Got them shoooes. / Betchadollar, / Betchadollar, / Where ya / Got them shoooes. / Got your shoes on your feet, / Got your feet on the street, / And the street’s in Noo / Awlins, Loo- / Eez-ee-anna. Where I, for my part, first ate a live oyster and first saw a naked woman with the lights on. . . . Every time I go to New Orleans I am startled by something.” So writes Roy Blount Jr. in this exuberant, character-filled saunter through a place he has loved almost his entire life—a city “like no other place in America, and yet (or therefore) the cradle of American culture.” Here we experience it all through his eyes, ears, and taste buds: the architecture, music, romance (yes, sex too), historical characters, and all that glorious food. The book is divided into eight Rambles through different parts of the city. Each closes with lagniappe—a little bit extra, a special treat for the reader: here a brief riff on Gennifer Flowers, there a meditation on naked dancing. Roy Blount knows New Orleans like the inside of an oyster shell and is only too glad to take us to both the famous and the infamous sights. He captures all the wonderful and rich history—culinary, literary, and political—of a city that figured prominently in the lives of Jefferson Davis (who died there), Truman Capote (who was conceived there), Zora Neale Hurston (who studied voodoo there), and countless others, including Andrew Jackson, Lee Harvey Oswald, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Jelly Roll Morton, Napoléon, Walt Whitman, O. Henry, Thomas Wolfe, Earl Long, Randy Newman, Edgar Degas, Lillian Hellman, the Boswell Sisters, and the Dixie Cups. Above all, though, Feet on the Street is a celebration of friendship and joie de vivre in one of America’s greatest and most colorful cities, written by one of America’s most beloved humorists. Download or read book Strange Future written by Min Hyoung Song and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime near the start of the 1990s, the future became a place of national decline. The United States had entered a period of great anxiety fueled by the shrinking of the white middle class, the increasingly visible misery of poor urban blacks, and the mass immigration of nonwhites. Perhaps more than any other event marking the passage through these dark years, the 1992 Los Angeles riots have sparked imaginative and critical works reacting to this profound pessimism. Focusing on a wide range of these creative works, Min Hyoung Song shows how the L.A. riots have become a cultural-literary event—an important reference and resource for imagining the social problems plaguing the United States and its possible futures. Song considers works that address the riots and often the traumatic place of the Korean American community within them: the independent documentary Sa-I-Gu (Korean for April 29, the date the riots began), Chang-rae Lee’s novel Native Speaker, the commercial film Strange Days, and the experimental drama of Anna Deavere Smith, among many others. He describes how cultural producers have used the riots to examine the narrative of national decline, manipulating language and visual elements, borrowing and refashioning familiar tropes, and, perhaps most significantly, repeatedly turning to metaphors of bodily suffering to convey a sense of an unraveling social fabric. Song argues that these aesthetic experiments offer ways of revisiting the traumas of the past in order to imagine more survivable futures.
