Book excerpt: To create a classroom where first encounters with literacy are playful and exploratory - not formal and separate from the child's world - this book spills out a rich cascade of ideas in four areas: making the classroom a print-rich learning environment, including print in daily activities, practicing literacy through art activities and dramatic play, and recasting the teacher's role into spectator, advisor, resource, and scribe. Hundreds of ideas support these goals. Grades preK-2. Suggested resources. Illustrated. Good Year Books. 204 pages. Second Edition.

Book excerpt: Transgender identities and other forms of gender and sexuality that transcend the normative pose important questions about society, culture, politics, and history. They force us to question, for example, the forces that divide humanity into two gender categories and render them necessary, inevitable, and natural. The transgender also exposes a host of dynamics that, at first glance, have little to do with gender or sex, such as processes of power and domination; the complex relationship among agency, subjectivity, and structure; and the mutual constitution of the global and the local. Particularly intriguing is the fact that gender and sexual diversity appear to be more prevalent in some regions of the world than in others. This edited volume is an exploration of the ways in which non-normative gendering and sexuality in one such region, the Pacific Islands, are implicated in a wide range of socio-cultural dynamics that are at once local and global, historical, and contemporary. The authors recognize that different social configurations, cultural contexts, and historical trajectories generate diverse ways of being transgender across the societies of the region, but they also acknowledge that these differences are overlaid with commonalities and predictabilities. Rather than focus on the definition of identities, they engage with the fact that identities do things, that they are performed in everyday life, that they are transformed through events and movements, and that they are constantly negotiated. By addressing the complexities of these questions over time and space, this work provides a model for future endeavors that seek to embed dynamics of gender and sexuality in a broad field of theoretical import.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Who’s really following you on social media? The scam of a lifetime brings together two wildly different women in this page-turning thriller about greed, legacy, and betrayal from the New York Times bestselling author of Watch Me Disappear. An ID Book Club Selection • “It’s Dynasty meets Patricia Highsmith.”—The Washington Post Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in L.A. alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet. Vanessa is a privileged young heiress who wanted to make her mark in the world. Instead she becomes an Instagram influencer—traveling the globe, receiving free clothes and products, and posing for pictures in exotic locales. But behind the covetable façade is a life marked by tragedy. After a broken engagement, Vanessa retreats to her family’s sprawling mountain estate, Stonehaven: a mansion of dark secrets not just from Vanessa’s past, but from that of a lost and troubled girl named Nina. Nina’s, Vanessa’s, and Lachlan’s paths collide here, on the cold shores of Lake Tahoe, where their intertwined lives give way to a winter of aspiration and desire, duplicity and revenge. This dazzling, twisty, mesmerizing novel showcases acclaimed author Janelle Brown at her best, as two brilliant, damaged women try to survive the greatest game of deceit and destruction they will ever play.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to establish Katharina von Bora, the daughter of German nobility who in the tumult of Reformation Europe married the church's most famous reformer, as "an extraordinary woman--a spiritual person whose faith and courage stand as an example today." In 16 chapters, the authors trace Katy's background, birth, childhood and early adult years, and her marriage to Martin Luther. They also document Katy's last years, revealing the faith and legacy of a woman who held steadfast to Christ in great adversity and need and who also advocated evangelical reforms. Acquainted with tradegy and grief, Katy exhibited a deep spirituality, encouraging her family and friends in times of desperation and doubt and providing for the numerous guests to the parsonage.

Book excerpt: The Art of Clothing: A Pacific Experience is a collection of richly textured and tremendously engaging empirical studies of cloth and clothing in colonial and post-colonial Pacific contexts. By challenging readers to reconsider the very nature of the materiality of clothing, the editors productively situate this volume at the intersection of a number of ongoing interdisciplinary projects that are coalescing around an interest in cloth and clothing. The book as a whole speaks lucidly to issues of current concern in a wide range of academic fields - including cultural studies, material culture, Pacific history, art history, history of religions, and museum studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paging Dr. Lilly O'Shea. Paging Dr. Lilly O'Shea." Even through the blissful darkness of sleep, I hear the voice on the intercom calling me. I want to scream, "I hear you, I hear you!" I jump up from the dingy cot in the doctor's lounge and grab the phone; "Dr O'Shea, what do ya need?" "Dr O'Shea, we got a MVA coming in, multiple vics", this from the operator. "Ya, be right there", I reply. I just left the E.R. less than 30 minutes ago, and here I am on my way back. I hate it and I love it. This is the life for me. I chose to become a doctor, and an E.R. doc at that. Did I do it because I love helping people? Nah, not exactly. It was the one profession that would require my complete undivided attention when at work and it's a total opposite of the profession, if that's what you call it, of my crime boss father and his two loyal sons. Yes, my father is what you might call a don. The head of a violent, but successful mafia syndicate. My brothers both work for him; both hoping to succeed him. How my mother deals with it all; I'll never know. Actually, that's a lie; I know how she deals with it. She simply chooses to ignore it, the whole thing; like it doesn't exist. You would think that my parents would be so proud of me, a doctor. Worked hard, got good grads, graduated from one of the top colleges in the country; and then turned around and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School; at the top of my class, of course. Funny, but my father, David, actually thought I would follow in his footsteps. Early on I demonstrated a penance for violence; cold blooded, heartless, malicious violence. Just like Daddy; boy was he proud that day. Dr. Lilly O' Shea is successful, weathly and beautiful. She is also the daughter of David O'Shea; head of the largest Black crime syndicate family on the east coast. What more can she ask for? Well, maybe peace of mind. Journey with her as she fights to stay out of the family business, while battling her own bloodlust for violence, her own stone dragon. Will she win the fight and, unlike her two brothers, stay away from Daddy and his 'family business'. Or will she succumb to the lure of the dark recesses of society, allowing her own penance for violence overcome her? Like a dying man caught in the ocean's riptide; will Dr. Lilly O'Shea, doctor, healer, saver of lives survive?
