Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the stories about Princes and Princesses in this book are true stories out of old books of history. There are some children who make life difficult by saying, first that stories about fairies are true, and that they like fairies; and next that they do not like true stories about real people, who lived long ago. I am quite ready to grant that there really are such things as fairies, because, though I never saw a fairy, any more than I have seen the little animals which lecturers call molecules and ions, still I have seen people who have seen fairies - truthful people. Now I never knew a lecturer who ventured to say that he had seen an ion or a molecule. It is well known, and written in a true book, that the godmother of Joan of Arc had seen fairies, and nobody can suppose that such a good woman would tell her godchild what was not true - for example, that the squire of the parish was in love with a fairy and used to meet her in the moonlight beneath a beautiful tree. In fact, if we did not believe in fairy stories, who would care to read them? Yet only too many children dislike to read true stories, because the people in them were real, and the things actually happened. Is not this very strange? This book is fully illustrated and annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Contents: Napoleon His Majesty The King Of Rome The Princess Jeanne Hacon The King Mi Reina! Mi Reina! Henriette The Siege Baby The Red Rose The White Rose Richard The Fearless Frederick And Wilhelmine Une Reine Malheureuse The 'Little Queen' Two Little Girls And Their Mother The Troubles Of Queen Elizabeth

THE PROFESSOR'S BOOKSHELF #5: Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, was a great admirer of George MacDonald's fairy-stories. When his children were young, he used to read The Princess and the Goblin to them in the evenings, before they went to bed. 'Tolkien knew well MacDonald's children's books "The Princess and the Goblin" and "The Princess and Curdie", both of which influenced Tolkien's depiction of goblins in The Hobbit, ' writes Douglas A. Anderson in 'Tales Before Tolkien: The Roots of Modern Fantasy'. Dart-Thornton's introduction notes similarities between this story and Tolkien's works, for example: 'The wise, magical, prescient grandmother of the Princess Irene, seems to be a literary ancestor of Galadriel; centuries old and yet looking young, a queen, a healer, a beautiful, golden-haired woman associated with water. 'Princess Irene has a magic ring which is associated with invisibility, being linked to a semi-visible thread. This ring aids her in an escape from the Goblin Underground, much as The One Ring aids Bilbo.' This new edition contains ten illustrations by Jessie Willcox-Smith from the 1920 edition, which was published when Tolkien was aged 28, his eldest child John was three years old and his second child Michael had just been born. The delicately beautiful drawings of Willcox-Smith have been loved by generations of children to this very day. Also included is an illustration by Arthur Hughes from the 1911 edition.

Among the undeservedly neglected books of the larger series is this book about real princes and princesses. These boys and girls don't have fairy godmothers or singing animal friends, but they still have all sorts of exciting adventures. Here you can read about famous people when they were still children, about people like Marie Antoinette, or Elizabeth the First, or the great conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte. There are also other princes and princesses you probably don't know, and their thrilling adventures and escapes, like Duke Richard of Normandy, who fled his castle hidden in a bale of hay, or Princess Henrietta Maria of England, who had to be dressed as a boy to slip past the Roundheads who wanted to kidnap her.Why buy the Rossignol edition? It is neither OCR'd nor photocopied. It includes all the original illustrations. It is properly formatted.Rossignol Books is proud to present lesser-known children's booksPlease support us by writing a review of this book after you purchase it.www.rossignolbooks.comWe also offer the following books in this series:The Blue Poetry BookThe True Story BookThe Red True Story BookThe Red Book of Animal StoriesThe Book of RomanceThe Red Romance Book

Book excerpt: A Little Princess is a children's novel written by the English-American novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett. Published in 1905 as an adaptation of Burnett's serialized novel Sara Crewe, it is considered a classic of English-language children's literature. The novel tells the story of a young girl named Sara Crewe, who moves from India to England to attend boarding school. When her beloved father dies and she is seemingly left with nothing, Sara goes through a period of intense mistreatment and deprivation at the hands of her schoolmistress. However, she survives on the strength of her imagination, especially through her conviction that she can behave like a princess even in dire circumstances. Eventually, Sara is rediscovered and has her fortune restored to her. The novel explores themes of imagination, friendship, and the treatment of children. It also offers insight into mainstream attitudes towards class, race, and colonialism in turn-of-the-century Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About A Dish of Orts Read the thoughts of the man who influenced three generations of philosophers and writers. Lovers of fantasy, literary apologetics, and Christian thought will appreciate A Dish of Orts, MacDonald’s work on using the imagination to lift and enliven the mind. George MacDonald, considered the pioneer of the fantasy genre, had an impact on the mind and imaginations of some of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th century. C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, and J.R.R. Tolkien all were greatly impacted by both MacDonald’s imaginative fiction as well as his sermons and social commentary. At the hub of the English Victorian literary circles, MacDonald was friends with many of the literary luminaries of his day such as Poet Laureate Alfred Tennyson, William Thackeray, John Ruskin, as well as many others.. Lovers of Alice in Wonderland have George MacDonald to thank for its publication after Lewis Carroll (the pen name for C.L. Dodgson) was encouraged to publish the story after its enthusiastic reception by MacDonald's children. MacDonald was so widely regarded, that upon his passing, G.K. Chesteron said of him, "George MacDonald was one of the three or four greatest men of the nineteenth century." This great man is gone, but his works remain. A Dish of Orts is a collection of essays by George MacDonald on topics ranging from imagination to Shakespeare, from poetry to living the true Christian life. This new annotated edition bridges the gap for 21st century readers to MacDonald’s 19th century world.
