Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a timely contribution to the growing body of scholarship on the apocryphal writings and their reception in the Middle Ages, especially in connection with visual representation. It aims to bridge what often remains disconnected, the visual art and the written text, the early Christian roots and medieval reception, the East and the West, as well as methodologies of various disciplines. The studies in this volume firstly investigate issues related to the Virgin Mary, and through them, also the status, function, and identity of women. Mary and the female element thus represent significant models and/or background figures in fields pertaining to theology, religious studies, textual studies, manuscript studies, and art history in a trans-disciplinary perspective. Secondly, the studies focus on the apostles and the Last Judgment, their visual representations and the use of apocryphal sources. The volume is divided in two parts according to two major topics: Part I dealing with Mary in the Apocrypha, and Part II focusing on the Apostles and the Last Judgment.

Book excerpt: For the first time a noted historian of Christianity explores the full story of the emergence and development of the Marian cult in the early Christian centuries. The means by which Mary, mother of Jesus, came to prominence have long remained strangely overlooked despite, or perhaps because of, her centrality in Christian devotion. Gathering together fresh information from often neglected sources, including early liturgical texts and Dormition and Assumption apocrypha, Stephen Shoemaker reveals that Marian devotion played a far more vital role in the development of early Christian belief and practice than has been previously recognized, finding evidence that dates back to the latter half of the second century. Through extensive research, the author is able to provide a fascinating background to the hitherto inexplicable “explosion” of Marian devotion that historians and theologians have pondered for decades, offering a wide-ranging study that challenges many conventional beliefs surrounding the subject of Mary, Mother of God.

Book excerpt: Continuously popular since it first appeared in 1977, The Incorruptibles remains the acknowledged classic on the bodies of Saints that did not undergo decomposition after death, many remaining fresh and flexible for years, or even centuries. After explaining both natural and artificial mummification, the author shows that the incorruption of the Saints bodies fits into neither category but constitutes a much greater phenomenon which is unexplained by modern science even to this day. The author presents 102 canonized Saints, Beati and Venerables, summarizing their lives, the discovery of their incorruption and investigations by Church and medical authorities. The incorruptible bodies of saints are a consoling sign of Christ's victory over death, a confirmation of the dogma of the Resurrection of the Body, a sign that the Saints are still with us in the Mystical Body of Christ, as well as a proof of the truth of the Catholic Faith for only in the Catholic Church do we find this phenomenon.

Book excerpt: The Matrix of Mysticism A Call for a New Reformation is on the cutting-edge pioneering into rarely-explored theological and religious history of Roman Catholicism. This book reveals that while under influence of humanistic and mystical teachings of the Roman Church, many Catholic priests committed vicious acts of homosexual molestation against Catholic adolescent boys and children. Using the 2002 clergy sexual-abuse scandal as a launching pad, the author exposes the cause and effect relationship between Catholicisms celibate-monastic mysticism and its long history of clerical sexual dysfunctions. The author documents how the Catholic Churchs occult Gnostic/Neoplatonic worldview regarding the antagonistic differences between the flesh and spirit became the motivating cause for its history of clerical sexual promiscuity and antifeminine mind-set as well as its rationale to deify Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an incarnation of the divine feminine. Martin Hudale spent 12 years in pre-Vatican II Catholic boarding schools and seminaries. During this time, he studied various Roman Catholic doctrines pertaining to dogmatic, moral, ecclesiastical, sacramental and patristic theology. He was required to study Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy along with logic, epistemology and the Latin and Greek classical literature. As a result, he has the background experience, knowledge and credibility to write this book. After being ordained a Catholic priest, he worked four years at an inner-city parish church in the United States where his awareness of the homosexual and immoral lifestyles among some of his fellow priests was an important factor causing him to leave the priesthood. After he became a born-again Christian at the age of 40, he spent approximately 25 years researching and writing this book while receiving an M.S.degree in Counseling Psychology. He is presently married to his wife of 35 yrs. and the father of three adult children.

These texts, while not raising new theological issues are interesting documents to go over in an attempt to study and understand the early years of Christianity and those struggles that the church had to overcome to thrive during the martyrdom started by the Roman emperor Nero and continued by many of his predecessors throughout the years until Constantine. Included in this volume are the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, the various versions of the Gospel of Thomas, the collection of additional Gospels of Peter and the Revelations of many first church founders such as Peter, John, Paul, Moses and Esdras. Within the book are many other books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume VIII of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find a collection of ancient writings, including The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, Excerpts of Theodotus, Two Epistles Concerning Virginity, the writings of Pseudo-Clement, the Apocryphal books of the New Testament, The Decretals, the memoirs of Edessa, and various fragments of writings from the second and third centuries. Many of the authors of these works are unknown, but the works themselves have been greatly influential."
