Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anecdotage of Glasgow: Comprising Anecdotes and Anecdotal Incidents of the City of Glasgow and Glasgow Personages Nor does the present volume aim at producing a formal and detailed record of lives and achieve ments, industrial or otherwise, of the men who have made Glasgow in either ancient, mediaeval, or modern times, although a biographical record of that nature would prove highly interesting and instructive. And no doubt in connection with such an immense city and enterprising people, there is ample scope and abundance of material for a work of such a nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Glasgow, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Merely a trading centre, not very beautiful to look at, and not at all interesting to explore. The City was spoken of as a place to which men came' to make a living or to make a fortune, and from which they were glad to flee whenever they had served their ends. The Glasgow boy was apt to look on his birthplace as not much to boast of, and its story as not worth studying. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 90th Annual Meeting, Glasgow, July, 1922: The Book of Glasgow His Book of Glasgow is not intended to be in any sense a Guide Book. The Printing and Publishing Committee in offering it to the members of the British Medical Association have had before them the desire to present simply an impression of the Second City of the Empire. The articles dealing with the University and the Medical Institutions give more extensive information than the term impression usually implies. These may be regarded as continuing and bringing up to date the story (of the Medical Institutions of Glasgow) written for the Meeting of the Association in Glasgow in 1888. The other articles have been written by a group of distinguished journalists and literary authorities familiar with their special subjects. Download or read book Scottish Jests and Anecdotes (Classic Reprint) written by Robert Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Jests and Anecdotes The Edinburgh lawyers of a century ago were a race very much addicted to hard drinking. Drinking, indeed, intruded itself into every scene of their lives; and, as much of their business was necessarily performed in taverns, on account of the wretched accommodations of their own houses in the old town, the ink-glass and the claret-stoup were alike dear to them; and they could scarcely attempt to take a supply from the one, but the pen was in danger of being immersed in the other. Some anecdotes illustrating these habits may be acceptable. A gentleman was one night engaged with a judge in a tremendous bouse, which lasted all night, and till within a single hour of the time when the court was to meet next morning. The two cronies had little more than time to wash themselves in their respective houses, when they had to meet again, in their professional capacities of judge and pleader, in the Parliament House.
