This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of Eve, illustrated by Anne Harriet Fish (1890 – 1964), portrays a world populated by young-old matrons, astoundingly mature young girls (of which Eve is one), Victorian lady remnants, resplendent captains of industry, pussy-footing English butlers, amorous nursemaids, race touts, yearning young lovers, swanking soldiers, blank and vapid bores, bridge-playing parsons, and middle-class millionaires. The Book of Eve takes a rather satirical look at high society in London during the years of the First World War and depicts young Eve getting herself into, and out of, many predicaments before moving on to the next. Ms Fish lived through two world wars and a depression to see high society change from the remnant of the Victorian era, to the Flappers of the post WWI era, through the austerity and re-introduction of tighter morals during and after WWII. Then to see the rapid change in society and dress codes, just missing out of the introduction of the mini-skirt in 1965. One cant help but wonder what she would have made of it. But having lived through the “Roaring Twenties” she probably wouldn’t have battered an eyelid. ============== KEYWORDS-TAGS: Eve, book, 1920’s, roaring twenties, policewoman, war-time, cooks, dramatic story, career, hospital nurse, east coast, uncle fred, enjoy, first experience, zeps, zeppelins, buy, motor car, odds and ends, threaten, mobilise, sisters, adventure, gallant, submarine, relieve, active service, trouble, bills, triumph, outwit, adam, improve, incomplete, interning arrangements, government, racing, victimised, work and play, lonely soldier, beauty business, Christmas at home, amusing, new furs, why’s and wherefores, matrimonial, matrimony, dinner party, gallant airmen, WWI, Great War, farm, labour-denuded farmer, play, adelphi theatre, death, tou-tou, tou tou, war-time, dances, au revoir, tattler, fish and fowl, abela publishing, Anne Harriet Fish

Book excerpt: After years on the outside, Bulgaria has finally made it into the EU club, but beyond the clichés about undrinkable plonk, cheap property, and assassins with poison-tipped umbrellas, the country remains a largely unknown quantity. Born on the muddy outskirts of Sofia, Kapka Kassabova grew up under Communism, got away just as soon as she could, and has loved and hated her homeland in equal measure ever since. In this illuminating and entertaining memoir, Kapka revisits Bulgaria and her own muddled relationship to it, travelling back to the scenes of her childhood, sampling its bizarre tourist sites, uncovering its centuries' old history of bloodshed and blurred borders, and capturing the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of her own and her country's past. Book excerpt: Should some secrets go to the grave? My name is Eve... But that is not my real name, rather it is the one given to me by Annaliese when she invited me into her goldern world. It was all I had ever longed for - a life of easy luxury and glamorous intentions - with beautiful people as my friends. Yet even the best party must eventually end, and this one ended in a storm of tragedy and bitter betrayal. Overnight, my perfect life was exposed for the lie it was ... and so I ran, as far and as fast as I could. Now an irresistible urge is summoning me back from my lonely exile, to attend one last party - Annaliese's farewell bash. Maybe I will find the resolution I seek, or maybe I will only find more heartbreak and deceit. And always the same question begs to be answered. Should some secrets go to the grave? The Book of Eve is a sumptuous and sophisticated tale of friendship, love, and betrayal amongst the rich and beautiful. With overtones of the glamour of the 1920s and echoes of the Great Gatsby, this is a beautiful and clever read which will envelop you in the world of Eve and her friends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory portrait showing how the famed British statesman created a network of American colleagues and friends who helped push our foreign policy in Britain’s favor during World War II Winston Churchill was the consummate networker. Using newly discovered documents and archives, Churchill’s American Network reveals how the famed British politician found a network of American men and women who would push American foreign policy in Britain’s direction during World War II—while at the same time producing lucrative speaking fees to support his lavish lifestyle. Stelzer has gathered contemporary local newspaper reports of Churchill’s lecture tours in many American cities, as well as interactions with leaders of local American communities—what he said in public, what he said at private meetings, how he comported himself. Readers observe Churchill as he is escorted by an armed Scotland Yard detective, aided by local police when Indian nationalists threaten to assassinate him, while he travels in deluxe private rail cars provided by wealthy members of his network; and as he recovers from a near-death automobile crash—with the help of liquor prescribed by a friendly doctor with no use for Prohibition. The links in Churchill’s network include some of fascinating American figures: the millionaire financier Bernard Baruch; the railroad magnate, Averell Harriman, who became an FDR-Churchill go-between; media moguls William Randolph Hearst (and wife and mistress); Robert R. McCormick—who attacked Churchill’s policies but enjoyed his company—and Charles Luce, who made him TIME’s Man of the Year and later Man of the Century; and bit players such as Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, and David Niven. It is no accident that Churchill was able to put these links together into an important network that served to his, and Britain’s, advantage. He worked at it relentlessly, remaining in close contact with his American friends by letter, signed copies of his many books, and by attending to their needs when they were in Britain. Many of these colleagues were invited to dinners at Chartwell and, later, Downing Street. Perhaps most importantly, Churchill’s network of American allies had Franklin Roosevelt’s ear while the president was deciding how to overcome opposition in congress to helping Britain take on the threat from Germany.

Book excerpt: Oral History: An Interdisciplinary Anthology is a collection of classic articles by some of the best known proponents of oral history, demonstrating the basics of oral history, while also acting as a guidebook for how to use it in research. Added to this new edition is insight into how oral history is practiced on an international scale, making this book an indispensable resource for scholars of history and social sciences, as well as those interested in oral history on the avocational level. This volume is a reprint of the 1984 edition, with the added bonus of a new introduction by David Dunaway and a new section on how oral history is practiced on an international scale. Selections from the original volume trace the origins of oral history in the United States, provide insights on methodology and interpretation, and review the various approaches to oral history used by folklorists, historians, anthropologists, and librarians, among others. Family and ethnic historians will find chapters addressing the applications of oral history in those fields.
