Book Synopsis The Theopolitical Discourses of Moses by : Martin Sicker
Download or read book The Theopolitical Discourses of Moses written by Martin Sicker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Deuteronomy, the last of the Five Books of Moses or Pentateuch, consists in the main of Moses' final discourses delivered to the children of Israel as they stood poised to begin the conquest and settlement of the land upon which they were to build a national society. The central concern of Moses, as reflected in these discourses, is with the challenge of nation building, creating an Israelite nation out of a mélange of ethnically related tribes and clans that were just liberated from centuries of subjugation and servitude in a relatively sophisticated pagan environment. That which is to bind them together is not a compact between them but rather a common covenant with God to which all would be equal parties. Many of the terms of the covenant were revealed incrementally in the earlier books of the Pentateuch. However, it is only here in Deuteronomy that Moses begins to give them the clearly discernible shape of a constitution for the covenantal society to be established as a nation-state in its divinely assigned territory. Within the constitutional framework set forth in the work is a range of precepts, rules, and regulations governing both those matters that are between man and God and those between man and man, understood as the two sides of a common coin, the covenant. In the effort to comprehend and explain the highly complex biblical text, the author has consulted and cited a wide range of commentaries and studies written over a period of some two millennia that have sought to understand the biblical texts from a variety of perspectives, many of which are virtually inaccessible to those without a good working knowledge of Hebrew.

Book Synopsis The Book of Deuteronomy by : Peter C. Craigie
Download or read book The Book of Deuteronomy written by Peter C. Craigie and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1976-08-12 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deuteronomy is a book about a community being prepared for a new life. Hardship and the wilderness lie behind; the promised land lies ahead. But in the present moment, there is a call for a new commitment to God and a fresh understanding of the nature of the community of God's people. Though the scene is set more than three thousand years in the past, Deuteronomy is still a book of considerable contemporary relevance. The book of Deuteronomy, however, is not only a book of contemporary relevance. It has been, and continues to be, one of the most important and debated works in modern biblical scholarship. - Author's preface.
Download or read book Deuteronomy written by Ian Cairns and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1992-01-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary Ian Cairns presents Deuteronomy as a slowly evolving, complex composite — as legal code, as treaty text or covenant, as Moses' farewell speech, and as the final volume of the Pentateuch. Despite Deuteronomy's structural complexity, however, Cairns shows how the theme "Word and Presence" permeates the entire book: God is the living Presence who can be encountered and known through his word addressed to each generation in turn. This commentary is unique in its emphasis on the theology of Deuteronomy (e.g., law as "humane instruction") as well as in its modern applications and illustrations from non-Western cultures.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing about The Gaze of Orpheus, Geoffrey Hartman suggested that When we come to write the history of criticism for the 1940 to 1980 period, it will be found that Blanchot, together with Sartre, made French 'discourse' possible, both in its relentlessness and its acuity..This selection.is exemplary for its clearly translated and well-chosen excerpts from Blanchot's many influential books. Reading him now, and in this form, I feel once more the excitement of discovering Blanchot in the 1950s.
