Book excerpt: It all started for Scott Boone when he was only eight years old due to his discovery of a mysterious man in the woods behind his house. Something was different about this man but Scott could not quite put his finger on it. The man was as curious about Scott as he was about the man. A younger version of the strange man began to appear soon after and the two of them began to play games with Scott in the woods only revealing themselves briefly then disappearing. Just when things were beginning to get interesting Scotts family moved away causing Scott to lose touch with his newfound friends. Scott never forgot them as the years went by and once he was able, he returned to the woods of his childhood in hopes of finding his friends once again. Scott began to have strange dreams that he could not explain. It took the wisdom of an old Indian Chief to decipher the dreams and to make Scott return home until the men of the forest sent him a sign to return. After eight long years the sign finally came which led Scott back to the wilds of the Boogie Woods and into the adventure of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: In 1969 after 20 years living in New York City, Engineer, Photographer & Educator William Henry Mackey, Jr. returned to the rural Georgia backwoods where he had been raised. During the 20 years since he had left, the South had undergone drastic changes, from the Civil Rights Era to the technological advances in farming techniques, yet at the same time it remained the same simple place where he had grown up. Mackey proceeded to photograph and interview friends, family and other residents of the area in an effort to document their history and recollections of an era that was fast fading under the onslaught of 'progress'. The result is a fascinating look into the legacy of rural Blacks in coastal Georgia and the political, technological and social changes they underwent during the century since the Emancipation Proclamation.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel—except it’s all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

Book excerpt: Jim and Rose Singhose are no strangers to the road. They've been riding Harley-Davidsons for over forty years, and they aren't even close to being finished. In 2003, there was little need for discussion: they would attend the one-hundredth birthday celebration of their favorite bikes. They would head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to celebrate with all the other Harley enthusiasts. Of course, there were bound to be some speed bumps along the way. Living the Dream is book three in the Harley Woman series, and it follows Jim and Rose for 13,000 miles, from Oregon to Canada, through Milwaukee, and back again. Along the way, they make a spur-of-the-moment decision to head to Prince Edward Island for what else lobster! Later, Rose gets stopped by suspicious customs officials who want to know what she's doing in Canada. Some people might say it's crazy to spend so much time on the road. For Rose, there's never any trepidation about a ride on her Harley. Instead of counting the miles away from home, she's comfortable counting the states they cross. Living the biker dream is filled with adventure, the occasional nuisance, and maybe some danger but for Rose, it's all worth it to feel the wind in her face and freedom in her heart.
