Book excerpt: Praise for the previous edition: "Honor Book" (Science Grades 7-12 category)—Society of School Librarians International Blood, Bugs, and Plants, Revised Edition explores several core biological areas that have influenced modern forensic science. Entomology ("bugs") is a specialty that uses knowledge about insect life cycles to inform death investigations. Botany ("plants") is a specialty that looks at plant materials as evidence in cases. Occupying the largest part of this eBook, the "blood" section covers the identification of blood and body fluids (determining their origin as human or animal), DNA typing, and blood-spatter patterns. Blood, Bugs, and Plants, Revised Edition takes a look at an exciting area of forensic science. Each chapter in this fascinating eBook provides an overview that briefly introduces readers to basic concepts in forensic science, allowing them to understand how this biological science sheds light on issues in legal cases. The forensic science specialty of criminalistics is also discussed in this comprehensive resource. Chapters include: History and Pioneers Scientific Principles: DNA and Genetics Forensic Analysis: Evaluation and Identification Testing of Blood and Body Fluid Evidence Forensic Analysis: DNA Typing Forensic Analysis: Bugs and Plants The Future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text, first published in 1935, is once again available. Still the standard reference in the English language, Principles of Insect Morphology is considered the author's masterpiece. A talented artist as well as one of the leading entomologists of his day, Robert E. Snodgrass produced a wealth of publications that display an accuracy and precision still unsurpassed. The 19 chapters in this volume cover each group of insect organs and their associated structures, at the same time providing a coherent morphological view of their fundamental nature and apparent evolution. To accomplish this aim, Snodgrass compares insect organs with those of other arthropods. Each chapter concludes with a glossary of terms. The 319 multipart illustrations are an invaluable source of information and have never been duplicated. This edition includes a new foreword by George Eickwort, Professor of Entomology at Cornell University, which relates the book to today's courses in insect morphology. Republication of this textbook will provide another generation of students with an essential foundation for their studies in entomology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Forensic Entomology A thoroughly updated introduction to forensic entomology In the newly revised second edition of The Science of Forensic Entomology, two distinguished entomologists deliver a foundational and practical resource that equips students and professionals to be able to understand and resolve questions concerning the presence of specific insects at crime scenes. Each chapter in the book addresses a topic that delves into the underlying biological principles and concepts relevant to the insect biology that grounds the use of insects in legal and investigational contexts. In addition to non-traditional topics, including the biology of maggot masses, temperature tolerances of necrophagous insects, chemical attraction and communication, reproductive strategies of necrophagous flies, and archaeoentomology, the book also offers readers: A thorough introduction to the role of forensic science in criminal investigations and the history of forensic entomology Comprehensive discussions of the biology, taxonomy, and natural history of forensically important insects Fulsome treatments of the postmortem decomposition of human remains and vertebrate carrion In-depth introduction to the concepts of accumulated degree days and the use of insect development for estimation of the postmortem interval New chapters dedicated to forensic entomotoxicology, aquatic insects in forensic investigations, microbiomes of forensic insects and carrion, professional standards, and case studies Perfect for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in forensic entomology, forensic biology, and general forensic science, The Science of Forensic Entomology will also earn a place in the libraries of law enforcement and forensic investigators, as well as researchers in forensic entomology
