Book excerpt: The Blue Ribbon Dinner Party Cookbook is a new format cookbook that shows you how to prepare delicious meals in an easy, organised manner so that you spend the evening with your guests, not in the kitchen. Alison Wheatcroft uses a new, innovative way to plan your culinary tasks, using a blue ribbon that signifies how much of a recipe you can prepare ahead of time – often all of it.This cookbook is international in its scope. There are duck and quail recipes from France, lobster from the United States, vitello tonnato from Italy, Thai soup, and salmon from Great Britain. The book is also rich in ideas – melt-in-the-mouth cheese sable biscuits that can be made weeks ahead of serving; a pizza that can be cut up into bite-size pieces and topped to make a plate of delicious hors d’eouvres. Have you ever had a stater of salmon mousse wrapped in its own smoked salmon case? Or a prawn souffle that won’t fall? “I have been entertaining internationally for many years and have built up a file of recipes that I know are different and delicious – and they work!” says author Alison.Cookng is one of the great, creative arts we have today and exciting food gives the greatest of pleasure. This cookbook details how to make your dinner or lunch party into a joy to prepare and present and puts you in the limelight – not in the kitchen. The Blue Ribbon Dinner Party Cookbook is the key to relaxed entertaining and is a must-own for anyone who loves cooking and dinner parties but always finds themselves too busy to enjoy them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennie C. Benedict's The Blue Ribbon Cook Book represents the very best in the tradition of southern regional cooking. Recipes for such classic dishes as Parker House rolls, lamb chops, corn pudding, Waldorf salad, and cheese and nut sandwiches are nestled among longtime local favorites such as apple butter, rice pudding, griddle cakes, and Benedictine, the cucumber sandwich spread which bears Benedict's name. Throughout the cookbook, Benedict's delightful voice shines. Once the most famous caterer in Louisville, Benedict also operated a celebrated tearoom and soda fountain and trained with Fannie Farmer at the Boston Cooking School. Five editions of Benedict's famous cookbook have been published, and her aim in sharing her recipes was simple; as she mentions in the preface, "I have tried to give the young housekeeper just what she needs, and for more experienced ones, the best that can be had in the culinary art." As a creative entrepreneur, Benedict had a significant influence on the local culture and foodways. Her sweet and savory dishes were the stars of many Derby parties, and yet she placed equal emphasis on simple luncheon and dinner recipes to satisfy the needs of home cooks. While her popular dishes graced genteel tables all over the Bluegrass, Benedict's chicken salad sandwiches, sold from a pushcart, offered Louisville children the first school lunches in the city. This new edition of The Blue Ribbon Cook Book welcomes new generations of readers and cooks—those who remember wearing white gloves and eating delicate tea sandwiches at the downtown department store as well as those who want to make satisfying regional classics such as blackberry jam cake like grandmother used to make. Food writer Susan Reigler introduces the story of Benedict's life and cuisine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twentieth-century world of The Farmer’s Wife may be vastly different than our own hectic, high-tech times, but some things never change—like a taste for the kind of food that’s cooked all day, the long-simmered stews and chilis, pot roasts and soups and puddings that savor of comfort and care. Culled from the pages of The Farmer’s Wife and adapted for contemporary lifestyles and kitchenware, these recipes help today’s cook recapture the full rich flavor of slow-cooked food steeped in the traditions of America’s heartland. With a modicum of preparation in the morning or even the night before, anyone can come home to the kind of meals that yesterday’s farmer’s wife prepared; the slow-cooked beans and barbeque, casseroles, and hot dishes that could serve a few friends, a big hungry family, or a whole community. For party dishes that let a host focus on guests; for meals that won’t heat up the summer kitchen; for hearty, delicious fare to satisfy gatherings big and small with leftovers to store for later meals, these slow-cooker recipes are the perfect time-wise, money-saving way to dish up a great helping of farmland history.

Book excerpt: "Mix in one part Diane Mott Davidson’s delightful culinary adventures with several tablespoons of Jan Karon’s country living and quirky characters, bake at 350 degrees for one rich and warm romance." --Library Journal A full-hearted novel about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home—and that sometimes the best things are found when you didn’t even know you were looking When Olivia Rawlings—pastry chef extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club—sets not just her flambéed dessert but the entire building alight, she escapes to the most comforting place she can think of—the idyllic town of Guthrie, Vermont, home of Bag Balm, the country’s longest-running contra dance, and her best friend Hannah. But the getaway turns into something more lasting when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous, sweater-set-wearing owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, offers Livvy a job. Broke and knowing that her days at the club are numbered, Livvy accepts. Livvy moves with her larger-than-life, uberenthusiastic dog, Salty, into a sugarhouse on the inn’s property and begins creating her mouthwatering desserts for the residents of Guthrie. She soon uncovers the real reason she has been hired—to help Margaret reclaim the inn’s blue ribbon status at the annual county fair apple pie contest. With the joys of a fragrant kitchen, the sound of banjos and fiddles being tuned in a barn, and the crisp scent of the orchard just outside the front door, Livvy soon finds herself immersed in small town life. And when she meets Martin McCracken, the Guthrie native who has returned from Seattle to tend his ailing father, Livvy comes to understand that she may not be as alone in this world as she once thought. But then another new arrival takes the community by surprise, and Livvy must decide whether to do what she does best and flee—or stay and finally discover what it means to belong. Olivia Rawlings may finally find out that the life you want may not be the one you expected—it could be even better.

Book excerpt: Most Americans assume that shared genes or blood relationships provide the strongest basis for family. What can adoption tell us about this widespread belief and American kinship in general? Blue-Ribbon Babies and Labors of Love examines the ways class, gender, and race shape public and private adoption in the United States. Christine Ward Gailey analyzes the controversies surrounding international, public, and transracial adoption, and how the political and economic dynamics that shape adoption policies and practices affect the lives of people in the adoption nexus: adopters, adoptees, birth parents, and agents within and across borders. Interviews with white and African-American adopters, adoption social workers, and adoption lawyers, combined with her long-term participant-observation in adoptive communities, inform her analysis of how adopters' beliefs parallel or diverge from the dominant assumptions about kinship and family. Gailey demonstrates that the ways adoptive parents speak about their children vary across hierarchies of race, class, and gender. She shows that adopters' notions about their children's backgrounds and early experiences, as well as their own "family values," influence child rearing practices. Her extensive interviews with 131 adopters reveal profoundly different practices of kinship in the United States today. Moving beyond the ideology of "blood is thicker than water," Gailey presents a new way of viewing kinship and family formation, suitable to times of rapid social and cultural change.
