Book excerpt: Falun Gong is a modern day spiritual/exercise movement which began in China in 1991 drawing on and combining ancient Chinese traditions. The Chinese Communist Party, alarmed at the growth of the movement and fearing for its own ideological supremacy banned the movement in 1999. Falun Gong practitioners were arrested in the hundreds of thousands and asked to recant. If they did not, they were tortured. If they still did not recant, they disappeared. Allegations surfaced in 2006 that the disappeared were being killed for their organs which were sold for large sums mostly to foreign transplant tourists. It is generally accepted that China kills prisoners for organs. The debate is over whether the prisoners who are killed are only criminals sentenced to death or Falun Gong practitioners as well. The authors produced a report concluding that the allegations were true. Bloody Harvest sets out the investigations and conclusions of the authors.

The sound of crickets filled the air as the last of the harvesters made their way home, leaving the fields empty and quiet. But as darkness descended, a chilling wind began to blow, carrying with it a sense of unease and the faint, metallic scent of blood. In the small town of Oakwood, nestled in the heart of the countryside, whispers of a curse had been circulating for generations. Every year, during the harvest season, strange and inexplicable events would occur. Crops would wither and die, livestock would fall ill, and the townspeople would huddle together in fear, waiting for the next disaster to strike. This year, however, the curse seemed to have taken on a more sinister form. In the weeks leading up to the harvest, several farmhands had gone missing without a trace. Their families searched desperately, but all they found were abandoned tractors at the edge of the cornfields, engines still running and doors left wide open. As night fell, the local sheriff received a frantic call from a farmer on the outskirts of town. When he arrived at the scene, his flashlight beam revealed a sight that would haunt him for years to come. The farmer's body lay sprawled across his front porch, his chest cavity hollowed out as if something had burrowed its way inside. A trail of viscera led from the corpse into the cornfield, disappearing into the darkness. As the harvest moon rose into the sky, casting an eerie light over the town, a group of teenagers gathered at the edge of the cornfields. Among them was Tara, a bold and adventurous girl with a penchant for exploring the unknown.

Book excerpt: The steadfast and sturdy Continental Op has been summoned to the town of Personville—known as Poisonville—a dusty mining community splintered by competing factions of gangsters and petty criminals. The Op has been hired by Donald Willsson, publisher of the local newspaper, who gave little indication about the reason for the visit. No sooner does the Op arrive, than the body count begins to climb . . . starting with his client. With this last honest citizen of Poisonville murdered, the Op decides to stay on and force a reckoning—even if that means taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain.

For Dr. Abby DiMatteo, the long road to Boston’s Bayside Hospital has been anything but easy. Now, immersed in the grinding fatigue of her second year as a surgical resident, she’s elated when the hospital’s elite cardiac transplant team taps her as a potential recruit. But Abby soon makes an anguished, crucial decision that jeopardizes her entire career. A car crash victim’s healthy heart is ready to be harvested; it is immediately cross-matched to a wealthy private patient, Nina Voss. Abby hatches a bold plan to make sure that the transplant goes instead to a dying seventeen-year-old boy who is also a perfect match. The repercussions are powerful and swift and Abby is shaken but unrepentant—until she meets the frail, tormented Nina. Then a new heart for Nina Voss suddenly appears, her transplant is completed, and Abby makes a terrible discovery: Nina’s heart has not come through the proper channels. Defying Bayside Hospital’s demands for silence, Abby plunges into an investigation that reveals an intricate, and murderous, chain of deceptions. Every move Abby makes spawns a vicious backlash and, in a ship anchored in the stagnant waters of Boston Harbor, a final, grisly discovery lies waiting…

Book excerpt: From the author of The Merlin Prophecy, the historical trilogy that “appeals to those who thrill to Game of Thrones” (Kirkus Reviews)—the third installment in the epic, action-packed story of King Arthur. Celtic Britain is on the brink of collapse, and the kingdom’s bloodiest days are upon it. For many years, the people of Britain have enjoyed peace and prosperity under the reign of King Arthur. But Arthur is now weakening with age, and the seeds of discontent are being sown. Seeking to cleanse the land of Christian belief, dissenters need a symbol with which to legitimize their pagan claim and unite the malcontents. They seize upon the ancient Cup of Bishop Lucius of Glastonbury as a way of fragmenting Arthur’s hard-earned kingdom. The ultimate threat to Arthur’s rule lies far closer to home: his own kin will betray him. Celt will slay Celt and the rivers will run with blood. Will all be lost, or can Arthur conquer the mounting forces before it’s too late?

Book excerpt: The inside story of China's organtransplant business and its macabre connection with internment camps and killing fields for arrested dissidents, especially the adherents of Falun Gong. Mass murder is alive and well. That is the stark conclusion of this comprehensive investigation into the Chinese state's secret program to get rid of political dissidents while profiting from the sale of their organs--in many cases to Western recipients. Based on interviews with top-ranking police officials and Chinese doctors who have killed prisoners on the operating table, veteran China analyst Ethan Gutmann has produced a riveting insider's account--culminating in a death toll that will shock the world. Why would the Chinese leadership encourage such a dangerous perversion of their medical system? To solve the puzzle, Gutmann journeyed deep into the dissident archipelago of Falun Gong, Tibetans, Uighurs and House Christians, uncovering an ageless drama of resistance, eliciting confessions of deep betrayal and moments of ecstatic redemption. In an age of compassion fatigue, Gutmann relies on one simple truth: those who have made it back from the gates of hell have stories to tell. And no matter what baggage the reader may bring along, their preconceptions of China will not survive the trip.

In addition, the revised second edition now includes over forty pages of additional photographs, some never before published, of the commanders as well as how the battlefield looks today from several key places on the battlefield.** In the spring of 1864 following the failed Red River Campaign, two vast armies marched across Southern Arkansas. The Federal Army, trying desperately to get back to the safety of Little Rock, having marched toward Louisiana in support of the Union's failed invasion of Texas was running out of food and supplies. Union General Frederick Steele knew he had to get his army back to the safety of Little Rock if they were to survive. In hot pursuit of the Federals were thousands of Confederates under command of General Edmund Kirby Smith. Their mission: destroy the Union Army at all cost. As both armies marched north toward Little Rock, the rain that had plagued the march early on had returned with a vengeance, turning the Federal retreat into a mud march. Standing in the way of the Federal retreat was the rain swollen Saline River crossing at Jenkins' Ferry. The frustrated Federals were forced to construct a pontoon bridge across the rising river slowing their march, enabling the Confederates to close the gap. The resulting Battle of Jenkins' Ferry was one of the largest and certainly one of the most vicarious in Arkansas Civil War history. Harvest of Death: the Battle of Jenkins ' Ferry, Arkansas is the first major work dedicated to the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry in fifty years. Author Joe Walker tells the story of two armies and their epic clash alongside the Saline River. Through the use of previously unpublished photographs and stories, Walker brings the battle to life as never before. Through the use of a previously unpublished map of the battle, drawn by a Confederate Engineer shortly after the battle, Walker shows the battle in a completely new light and changes forever the way historians believed the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry was fought. Walker also discusses the discovery of previously forgotten accounts of the battle that suggest the Federal Army used more that skill and tactics to out battle the Confederates - they may have outwitted and defeated the Confederates through one altered courier dispatch - an alteration that may have affected the outcome of the battle and changed the balance of power in Civil War Arkansas. The Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas was one of the most violent Civil War battles in our history with accusations of atrocities committed by both sides. It will make you rethink the history of Civil War Arkansas.

Book excerpt: The mysterious disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea in 1961 has kept the world and his powerful, influential family guessing for years. Now, Carl Hoffman uncovers startling new evidence that finally tells the full, astonishing story. Despite exhaustive searches, no trace of Rockefeller was ever found. Soon after his disappearance, rumors surfaced that he'd been killed and ceremonially eaten by the local Asmat—a native tribe of warriors whose complex culture was built around sacred, reciprocal violence, head hunting, and ritual cannibalism. The Dutch government and the Rockefeller family denied the story, and Michael's death was officially ruled a drowning. Yet doubts lingered. Sensational rumors and stories circulated, fueling speculation and intrigue for decades. The real story has long waited to be told—until now. Retracing Rockefeller's steps, award-winning journalist Carl Hoffman traveled to the jungles of New Guinea, immersing himself in a world of headhunters and cannibals, secret spirits and customs, and getting to know generations of Asmat. Through exhaustive archival research, he uncovered never-before-seen original documents and located witnesses willing to speak publically after fifty years. In Savage Harvest he finally solves this decades-old mystery and illuminates a culture transformed by years of colonial rule, whose people continue to be shaped by ancient customs and lore. Combining history, art, colonialism, adventure, and ethnography, Savage Harvest is a mesmerizing whodunit, and a fascinating portrait of the clash between two civilizations that resulted in the death of one of America's richest and most powerful scions.
