Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite China's recent emergence as a major global economic and geopolitical power, its association with counterfeit goods and intellectual property piracy has led many in the West to dismiss its urbanization and globalization as suspect or inauthentic. In Underglobalization Joshua Neves examines the cultural politics of the “fake” and how frictions between legality and legitimacy propel dominant models of economic development and political life in contemporary China. Focusing on a wide range of media technologies and practices in Beijing, Neves shows how piracy and fakes are manifestations of what he calls underglobalization—the ways social actors undermine and refuse to implement the specific procedures and protocols required by globalization at different scales. By tracking the rise of fake politics and transformations in political society, in China and globally, Neves demonstrates that they are alternate outcomes of globalizing processes rather than anathema to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Chicago Folklore Prize CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for 2020 Despite predictions that commercial mass culture would displace customs of the past, traditions firmly abound, often characterized as folklore. In The Practice of Folklore: Essays toward a Theory of Tradition, author Simon J. Bronner works with theories of cultural practice to explain the social and psychological need for tradition in everyday life. Bronner proposes a distinctive “praxic” perspective that will answer the pressing philosophical as well as psychological question of why people enjoy repeating themselves. The significance of the keyword practice, he asserts, is the embodiment of a tension between repetition and variation in human behavior. Thinking with practice, particularly in a digital world, forces redefinitions of folklore and a reorientation toward interpreting everyday life. More than performance or enactment in social theory, practice connects localized culture with the vernacular idea that “this is the way we do things around here.” Practice refers to the way those things are analyzed as part of, rather than apart from, theory, thus inviting the study of studying. “The way we do things” invokes the social basis of “doing” in practice as cultural and instrumental. Building on previous studies of tradition in relation to creativity, Bronner presents an overview of practice theory and the ways it might be used in folklore and folklife studies. Demonstrating the application of this theory in folkloristic studies, Bronner offers four provocative case studies of psychocultural meanings that arise from traditional frames of action and address issues of our times: referring to the boogieman; connecting “wild child” beliefs to school shootings; deciphering the offensive chants of sports fans; and explicating male bravado in bawdy singing. Turning his analysis to the analysts of tradition, Bronner uses practice theory to evaluate the agenda of folklorists in shaping perceptions of tradition-centered “folk societies” such as the Amish. He further unpacks the culturally based rationale of public folklore programming. He interprets the evolving idea of folk museums in a digital world and assesses how the folklorists' terms and actions affect how people think about tradition.

Every injury Remy heals becomes her own. She lives in fear of the day she's forced to mend a wound from which she can't recover--and she's desperate to keep her amazing ability a secret. Enter Asher Blackwell, a scarred eighteen-year-old with dangerous powers of his own. Asher seems to know more about Remy's abilities than she does--and maybe more than he's letting on. And if they catch her, they won't just injure her. They'll kill her. Corrine Jackson is a San Francisco transplant, having lived on both coasts from Southern California to New York City. Book excerpt: Arthur Kneely, also known as Deadeyes, is a brain damaged former boxer, collegiate wrestler and debt collector in his early forties who lives in the town of River Ridge, New Jersey in 1973. He survives on disability, money he makes from bareknuckle fights, and a stipend from the local Catholic diocese. Because of his head injury, and the lack of control it has left him with, Arthur has killed several men. He is protected though by the local mob and police mainly because he has relatives in both organizations. Arthur lives on one side of a house that he shares with a mentally ill cannibalistic former nun named Marie. His Uncle Kevin is a New York City police captain, and he enlists Arthur's aid in solving the brutal murder of one of Arthur's associates from years ago. Although Arthur's injury has left him with a speech impediment and cognitive difficulties, his intuition proves invaluable in locating the murderer. When the two meet, all Hell breaks loose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on cultural policy, queer and feminist theory, materialist media studies, and postcolonial historiography, Bliss Cua Lim analyzes the crisis-ridden history of Philippine film archiving—a history of lost films, limited access, and collapsed archives. Rather than denigrate underfunded Philippine audiovisual archives in contrast to institutions in the global North, The Archival Afterlives of Philippine Cinema shows how archival practices of making do can inspire alternative theoretical and historical approaches to cinema. Lim examines formal state and corporate archives, analyzing restorations of the last nitrate film and a star-studded lesbian classic as well as archiving under the Marcos dictatorship. She also foregrounds informal archival efforts: a cinephilic video store specializing in vintage Tagalog classics; a microcuratorial initiative for experimental films; and guerilla screenings for rural Visayan audiences. Throughout, Lim centers the improvisational creativity of audiovisual archivists, collectors, advocates, and amateurs who embrace imperfect access in the face of inhospitable conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RUSH LIMBAUGH, I HOPE HE FAILS, BAILED OUT AMERICA, is Rushs industry. Rush Limbaughs fingerprints are all over the book. The bulk of the book contains brilliant perspectives from Rush Limbaugh on the twenty-one months of the Obama presidency, the destructive liberalism ideology and the bitter truth about racism and many more issues that we faced. The book also covers the 2008 general election, the scheduled 2010 midterm elections and the effectiveness of the four words I hope he fails. About Barack Obama, Rush said Radicalism comes dressed in many ways. This time its dressed up as Barack Obama. About the future of America, Rush said And with nothing to stop him {Obama}, theres nothing to stop him. And as theres nothing to stop him hes going to continue to try to get away with as much as he can, and at some point people are gonna go, Wait a minute, I didnt think I was going to have to go to DMV to withdraw money from my bank. Rush Limbaughs comment I hope he fails turned water into wine. It significantly transformed the Republican Party from a stale, near extinct Party that lost the presidency and both houses of Congress to a Party brimming with confidence and with concrete signs of winning back both houses of Congress from the Democratic Party within 24 months of electing a Democrat as the first African American United States president. The impact of Rushs words also rendered some of Obamas radical agendas dead in the water. It remains to be seen if Obama and the Democratic Party will reverse the wine back to water. Rush has harsh messages for those Republican lawmakers who would rather compromise their core values than be subjected to withering and vile criticism by their opponent. After twenty-one months of a torrid reign as president, are Obamas salad days as president over? Has Obama finally turned the corner? It all remains to be seen. Rush Limbaughs criticism of President Obama is not for political expedient. Its for the survival of this great country. We will find out why, after 20 years, Rush continues to be Americas last man standing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). Following his highly successful An Askew View: The Films of Kevin Smith (Applause), John Kenneth Muir now turns to the life and work of legendary cult-film director Sam Raimi. Raimi exploded on the movie scene in 1982, when he was 23 years old, with the audacious, independently produced horror film The Evil Dead . Re-igniting the horror genre to such a degree that Wes Craven credited Raimi on-screen in A Nightmare on Elm Street , Raimi went on to direct two Evil Dead sequels, his own comic-book superhero, Darkman , and an over-the-top, post-modern western, The Quick and the Dead . Raimi's influence on other filmmakers continues to be enormous from the "shaky cam" shots of the Coen brothers to the early oeuvre of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, both of whom have been termed the "direct progeny" of Raimi's works. In 2002, Raimi's Spider-Man had the biggest opening weekend in history, earning more than $114 million at the box office. The Unseen Force also features a sneak peek at the much anticipated Spider-Man 2 . Included are 30 first-person accounts and interviews from a number of eclectic sources from the cinematographers who shot Raimi's early films to the producers, screenwriters, actors, special effects magicians and composers who collaborated to make his films the stuff of legend, earn mainstream success, and still be the focus of obsessive cult followings.

This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the uninitiated the author has obligingly supplied a definition for the slasher/splatter film: "Any motion picture which contains scenes of extreme violence in graphic and grisly detail...." For those film viewers who think this is a good thing and are more likely to select The Texas Chainsaw Massacre than The Remains of the Day, or for those who are not quite sure but are nevertheless drawn to the phantasmagoric, or for those horrified by gratuitous violence and blood for blood's sake but are researching this filmic phenomenon, this reference book provides all the gory details. From At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul Away to Zombie 2: The Dead Are Among Us, this book is an exhaustive study of the splatter films of the 1960s and 1970s. After a history of the development of the genre, the main meat of the book is a filmography. Each entry includes extensive credits, alternate names and foreign release titles; availability of the film on videocassette; availability of soundtracks and film novelization; and reviews. Extensive cross-referencing is also included.
