Book excerpt: Surveys of pupae and larvae of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were carried out in Thua Thien Hue Province of central Vietnam, and Lam Dong Province of southern Vietnam in 2014. A total of 26 species belonging to the genus Simuliumwere collected, consisting of eight known species, one newly recorded species, and 17 new species (of which three species of the subgenus Nevermannia were described in 2014). The remaining 14 new species (nine of the subgenus Gomphostilbia and five of the subgenus Simulium) are described here based on females, males, pupae and mature larvae. The total number of species of black flies in Vietnam is now 46. Keys to identify all 26 species recorded from the two provinces of Vietnam are given for females, males, pupae and mature larvae.

Download or read book Black Flies written by Ke Chung Kim and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black flies (simuliids) are among the most severe pests affecting humans and animals worldwide. Responsible for the transmission of onchocerciasis among humans and bovine onchocerciasis and avian malaria among wildlife and agricultural animals, black flies' competency as disease vectors is rivaled only by that of mosquitos and ticks. Because of their economic and medical importance, black flies have been the subject of intense research, tremendous progress having been achieved in many areas, including taxonomy, ecology, cytogenetics, biochemistry, and control. This book, evolving from an international conference of the world's foremost authorities, integrates for the first time the wide range of multidisciplinary research findings on black flies. The thirty-two chapters present a comprehensive discussion of systematics, biochemistry, sensory physiology, behavior and ecology of immatures and adults, population monitoring and management, current methods of control, and disease epidemiology. The annotated checklist identifies and provides geographical distribution of all formally described black flies in the world and includes almost 2,000 specific/subspecific and 121 generic/subgeneric names. The book provides a cohesive understanding of black flies and will be invaluable to entomologists, epidemiologists, biologists, veterinarians, parasitologists, and medical researchers concerned with developing an economically conservative, environmentally sound management system against black flies and simuliid-borne diseases worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume on blackflies (Simuliidae) in the ABLA series concentrates on the 80 species present in Brazil. This modern morphological overview within the framework of the World Inventory of the Simuliidae forms the foundation for further morphological studies in the Neotropical region, prerequisite to cytological and molecular studies on the family. Comprehensive descriptions and taxonomic discussions are given for each species with digital images of main identification characters and generic, subgeneric and species identification keys in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Brief world and Neotropical overviews of the biology, medical importance and control of species are provided with full coverage for those found in Brazil. The book is addressed to taxonomists, immunologists, ecologists, veterinarians, physicians and biologists in general.
Book Synopsis The Natural History of Blackflies by : Roger W. Crosskey
Download or read book The Natural History of Blackflies written by Roger W. Crosskey and published by . This book was released on 1990-11-28 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of blackflies has come of age--the blackfly is now recognized as a carrier of major endemic diseases; its larval stages are seen to play a major role in the ecology of rivers and streams; and blackfly chromosomes have proved unusually amenable material for cytogenetical studies. The expanded interest in the blackfly has greatly increased the scientific literature about them--literature that is extremely technical, highly specialized, and often of little help to non-specialists. This work bridges the gap between specialists and those whose work brings them in contact with the blackfly, but who need information at a more general level. It synthesizes present knowledge about the natural history of the fly family Simuliidae, covering taxonomic background, elements of larval structure and life in water, adult fly structure, migration, mating, biting and bloodsucking, human diseases, and natural enemies of larval and adult flies. Over 1200 bibliographic citations, a glossary of technical terms, and numerous figures, tables and illustrations are included.

Book Synopsis Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) Occurring in Mississippi, and Their Medical, Veterinary, and Economic Impacts by : Tina Marie Nations
Download or read book Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) Occurring in Mississippi, and Their Medical, Veterinary, and Economic Impacts written by Tina Marie Nations and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about black fly pest species in Mississippi, other than research from the 1930s. A better understanding of the pest species that occur in Mississippi is important for human and animal health. My research focused on what species of black flies occur in Mississippi, their seasonality and distribution, and a detailed systematic survey of the primary pest species. Lastly, I attempted to quantify nuisance effects and economic impacts of black flies on people, backyard poultry, and livestock. I examined scientific literature and records of black flies occurring in the southeastern U.S., and particularly Mississippi. This search revealed several unpublished manuscripts by Dr. George H. Bradley on the biology, ecology, and control of black flies in the Mississippi Delta during the 1930s. These publications were curated and made available to the scientific community. I identified and compiled an annotated list of larval, pupal, and adult stages of black flies occurring in Mississippi, derived from specimens housed in the Mississippi State University Entomological Museum (MEM). These specimens had been collected over several decades by a variety of entomologists, students, and the public. In addition, I included data from thousands of black flies collected during this project. To assess seasonality and relative abundance of the primary pest black fly species in Mississippi, I systematically collected adult black fly specimens for two years, documenting species present, seasonality, adult emergence patterns, and associated meteorological conditions. These ten sites were selected based on Dr. George Bradley's extensive work and complaints from local county extension agents, veterinarians, and municipal public works personnel. For economic, human, and animal health impacts of black flies, I employed a four-tiered approach: 1) a survey of lay and medical literature for reports of human health problems from black fly bites, 2) a query of city and county public works personnel concerning black fly nuisance effects, 3) an analysis of statewide hospital outpatient International Classification of Diseases-9 (ICD-9) discharge data and lastly, 4) a statewide survey of backyard poultry owners to ascertain animal health and monetary impacts from black flies.
Book Synopsis The Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) of Florida and Their Involvement in the Transmission of Leucocytozoon Smithi to Turkeys by : Dennis Drew Pinkovsky
Download or read book The Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) of Florida and Their Involvement in the Transmission of Leucocytozoon Smithi to Turkeys written by Dennis Drew Pinkovsky and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immature and adult black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were collected in Florida over a period of three years. Eighteen species of black flies including ten which are new records for the State were found to occur in Florida. Records of black flies from 192 locations in 50 counties are included. Biological information is provided for each species together with data on distribution, seasonal occurrence, stream ecology and species associations. Keys to the Simuliidae of Florida are provided and structures are illustrated. Representative specimens have been deposited in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods and in the United States National Museum, Washington D.C. Transmission investigations have incriminated three species, Simuliwri congareenarum, S. meridionale, and S. slossonae, as vectors of Leucocytozoon smithi to turkeys in Florida. On nineteen occasions L. smithi was transmitted to domestic turkeys by the bites of infected black flies.
