Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Bitch and Other Stories; a collection of twenty three short stories; presents a kaleidoscope of strange sights and impressions that P. Raja observed and felt. He crafts his stories in such a way that life appears in his short stories in all its vastness and mystery. He writes with no trace of false modesty. The real-life incidents that sneak in are always the things that disturb us enough to wind their way into the space of P. Raja’s stories. True; our daily lives are mostly a mixture of drab routine and unpleasant surprises. However; from time to time; something unexpected happens; which makes life worth living. This is precisely what P. Raja’s stories portray. He inhabits a very familiar cosmos and his stories almost always bubble with a socio-cultural undercurrent. He always thinks of people and places familiar to him because that is his own experiential base. Rarely do some stories chart an unknown territory and the reader simply journeys with a certain lesser known reality where ghosts are staring us in the face. His stories; his words; the wonderful characters; offer us the surprise; the excitement; the sense of wonder that kindle the fire of human imagination. Collection of must read heart touching stories.

Book excerpt: KING'S KNIGHT is a still-prophetic virtual-world novella written in 1971 about a Chessman with no memory of any other life, struggling with his suspicion there is more to his world than he is allowed to know. From the beginning of cybertelempathy in a 1965 grad student's basement lab, to the man who steals a remotely-operated "gnome" to commit a crime, to the mother who wants to love her baby again and again, these are humorous, exciting, and sometimes provocative visions of what might have been, and yet may be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) are wonderful evocations of ordinary Italian life, focusing in particular on his native Sicily. In an original and dynamic prose style, he portrays such eternal human themes as love, honour and adultery with rich and colourful language. The inspiration for Mascagni's opera, 'Cavalleria Rusticana' depicts a young man's triumphal return home from the army, spoilt when he learns that his beloved is engaged to another man. Verga's acute awareness of the hardships and aspirations of peasant life can be seen in stories such as 'Nedda', 'Picturesque Lives' and 'Black Bread', while others such as 'The Reverend' and 'Don Licciu Papa' show the dominance of the church and the law in the Sicilian communities he portrays so vividly.

The same girl, now on the cusp of adulthood, shares her family’s growing fears that her father has disappeared. Acclaimed author Ann Petry penned these and the other unforgettable narratives in Miss Muriel and Other Stories more than seventy years ago, yet in them contemporary readers recognize characters who exist today and dilemmas that recur again and again: the reluctance of African Americans to seek help from the police, the rage that erupts in a black man worn down by brutality, the tyranny that the young can visit on their elders regardless of race. Originally published between 1945 and 1971, Petry’s stories capture the essence of African American experience since the 1940s.

Book excerpt: What if you're not like anybody else? What if you can't be? What does it mean to be human? The odds are stacked against the lost and alone. Lucky is alien. Yep she really is an alien, and this edition collects the first four episodes in her tale. Long, long ago, there was war in the heart of the galaxy. The core stars were ripped apart by the fury of that conflict. Lucky is a survivor from it. Her ship charts a careful course, ploughing its lonely furrow between the stars, always away from what she once knew. She'd stop running but it's now all she knows. Eventually she comes upon a back-water of the Milky Way, known locally as Orion's Belt. Also in this collection, four short stories: After School - civilisation is collapsing, even in the UK. Writing Day - a tale of the last library on Earth. Flower to Tree - all SF nightmares have a beginning. Joe and the Xenophids - humanity are next up on the extinction list. Some explicit content. http: //tparchie.wordpress.com/lucky/

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handsomely equipped with a comprehensive introductory historical essay, editor's notes and selected bibliography, this distinguished anthology is a model of genre research. These previously untranslated stories, published from 1871 onward, offer reading virtually unknown to most American (and many German) readers. Some authors combine scientific and philosophical issues, like Kurd Lasswitz in his witty tale "To the Absolute Zero of Existence: A Story from 2371, " while others, as in Erik Simon's 1983 title story, pose psychological puzzles involving alien phenomena. Though the earlier stories in particular demand painstaking reading, all of them repay it with rewarding insights into German and Austrian culture and the many possible uses and misuses of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how the flood myths of early China provided a template for that society’s major social and political institutions. Early Chinese ideas about the construction of an ordered human space received narrative form in a set of stories dealing with the rescue of the world and its inhabitants from a universal flood. This book demonstrates how early Chinese stories of the re-creation of the world from a watery chaos provided principles underlying such fundamental units as the state, lineage, the married couple, and even the human body. These myths also supplied a charter for the major political and social institutions of Warring States (481–221 BC) and early imperial (220 BC–AD 220) China. In some versions of the tales, the flood was triggered by rebellion, while other versions linked the taming of the flood with the creation of the institution of a lineage, and still others linked the taming to the process in which the divided principles of the masculine and the feminine were joined in the married couple to produce an ordered household. While availing themselves of earlier stories and of central religious rituals of the period, these myths transformed earlier divinities or animal spirits into rulers or ministers and provided both etiologies and legitimation for the emerging political and social institutions that culminated in the creation of a unitary empire. Mark Edward Lewis is Kwoh-ting Li Professor of Chinese Culture at Stanford University and the author of Writing and Authority in Early China and The Construction of Space in Early China, both published by SUNY Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American Women in the News offers the first in-depth examination of the varied representations of Black women in American journalism, from analyses of coverage of domestic abuse and "crack mothers" to exploration of new media coverage of Michelle Obama on Youtube. Marian Meyers interrogates the complex and often contradictory images of African American women in news media through detailed studies of national and local news, the mainstream and Black press, and traditional news outlets as well as newer digital platforms. She argues that previous studies of African Americans and the news have largely ignored the representations of women as distinct from men, and the ways in which socioeconomic class can be a determining factor in how Black women are portrayed in the news. Meyers also proposes that a pattern of paternalistic racism, as distinct from the "modern" racism found in previous studies of news coverage of African Americans, is more likely to characterize the media's treatment of African American women. Drawing on critical cultural studies and black feminist theory concerning representation and the intersectionality of gender, race and class, Meyers goes beyond the cultural myths and stereotypes of African American women to provide an updated portrayal of Black women today. African American Women in the News is ideal for courses on African American studies, American studies, journalism studies, media studies, sociology studies, women’s studies and for professional journalists and students of journalism who seek to improve the diversity and sensitivity of their journalistic practice.
