Book Synopsis Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints by : Helen Merritt
Download or read book Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints written by Helen Merritt and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture is a pioneer exploration of a previously neglected genre of late-Meiji art: the type of handmade multicolor book frontispieces known as kuchi-e. Early European collectors assumed that the Japanese woodblock tradition came to an end in Western-tainted prints. Although many crudely colored prints of subjects such as steam trains and men in derby hats did flood the Japanese market, the works introduced in this amply illustrated and readable volume make clear that there was another class of popular woodblock tradition unknown to foreigners that continued into the early twentieth century. In their examination of this late flowering of the woodblock print, the authors provide not only an introduction to a popular artistic tradition but also a new lens through which to view Japanese life at the end of the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

Book Synopsis Yoshitoshi's Women by : John Stevenson
Download or read book Yoshitoshi's Women written by John Stevenson and published by University of Washington Press and Avery Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was the last creative genius of woodblock prints, his career spanning traditional Japan and the modernizing of Meiji. He is best known for designs of Japan's legendary past, for violent and bloody prints, and for prints of women. His finest images of women form a series entitled Fuzoku sanjuniso, "Thirty-two Aspects of Daily Life", which was issued in 1888. The series shows women of different social classes from 1789 to Yoshitoshi's present. Sensitively conceived and lavishly produced, the prints are vignettes of women caught in typical moments of their daily lives. The series has become a classic and fetches high prices from collectors. Woodblock prints had always been concerned with what was fashionable and up-to-date - "Thirty-two Aspects of Daily Life" was different in trying to capture the flavor of historical periods that had disappeared. It was original, too, in its attempt to individualize women in a genre that was usually highly stylized. This book presents "Thirty-two Aspects of Daily Life" in full color, explaining the subtleties of each design in text opposite the print. An illustrated introduction explores Yoshitoshi's often problematic relations with women, the lives of courtesans and geisha, and how the series was produced.

Book Synopsis Traditional Monster Imagery in Manga, Anime and Japanese Cinema by : Zília Papp
Download or read book Traditional Monster Imagery in Manga, Anime and Japanese Cinema written by Zília Papp and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Monster Imagery in Manga, Anime and Japanese Cinema builds on the earlier volume Anime and its Roots in Early Japanese Monster Art, that aimed to position contemporary Japanese animation within a wider art historical context by tracing the development of monster representations in Edo- and Meiji-period art works and post-war visual media. While the previous volume concentrated on modern media representations, this work focuses on how Western art historical concepts and methodology might be adapted when considering non-Western works, introducing traditional monster art in more detail, while also maintaining its links to post-war animation, sequential art and Japanese cinema. The book aims at a general readership interested in Japanese art and media as well as graduate students who might be searching for a research model within the fields of Animation Studies, Media Studies or Visual Communication Design.
